It's March and I have a ton of garden ideas for you whether you have passed your last spring frost date or not! In this month’s garden guide, I focus on the vegetable crops and plants that can be started from seed or planted during the month of March and spring/summer garden planning. If your last spring frost date falls in January, February, March or April, then you need to start sowing seeds now. Therefore, I share my tips for indoor or outdoor seed sowing. I also cover important garden tasks like pruning fruit trees, techniques for sowing seeds, and recommendations on my favorite cultivars. Spring gardening is my favorite and most abundant season. I share all my tips and tricks as a professional seed and plant nursery so you can apply them at home.

Loving that easy peasy trellis! I'm going to try that for my cucumbers and pole beans. Here's my recommendation for pollinators: golden duranta. Beautiful purple flowers that draws the pollinaters in. I guess they're called golden for the yellow seed pods. The downside is that they'll die back to the base from a freeze, but with water and warmth, new stems sprout right back from the roots. Pretty fast growing as well. (Texas zone 9A) Thanks as always Jerra! 😊

Hi, Jerra. If the marigolds don’t work for you on the nematodes, do you have any other suggestions? I am in Winter Park in the same grow zone. Thanks!
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 4 ай бұрын
Crop rotation, mixing crab meal into the soil, solarizing the soil, drench the soil with beneficial nematodes, using a cover crop that actually kills nematodes like sundan grass, plant the correct things at the correct time of year so as to not attract nematodes, ex dont grow tomatoes over the summer when nematodes are the most active. Add lots and lots of biomass, mulch, compost, wood chips as possible to the soil. It takes all of these things to combat nematodes together, not just one thing.

I am in process of growing out my GreenStalk garden towers so I can do a video about this exact topic. In general, you want to plant small, dwarf, or micro dwarf type stuff in the original size ones and if you have the larger size one you can get away with some bigger things. I'm experimenting with that now.

Where did you find your milkweed? I'm looking in particular for Swamp milkweed. I'm also wondering how your elephant garlic is doing? Another question I have is will the peroxide mixture work for rust? My fig keeps getting rust every time it rains.
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 4 ай бұрын
I started my milkweed from seed because it is hard to find varities of milkweed locally. All the stores in my area carry the same tropical milkweed. My elephant garlic is doing awesome! Lots of big green leaves. I wont harvest until summer. I beleive hydrogen peroxide should work for rust.

So what type and when do you plant Dalia’s ? I have not been successful in growing them in 15 years. Tubers arrive too late for me . They grow but don’t bloom for me. I have thought about trying seeds in late summer and planting in Oct/Nov. I would love a instructional on growing Dalia’s in Florida.
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 4 ай бұрын
I plant them in February and March. They bloom before summer arrives and then drastically decline with all the heat. They are not perennial in very hot climates. I have only grown them from a bulb. I imagine seed would take forever.

Wonderful! Another hear tolerant greens is egyptian spinach and large leaf sorrel (afternoon shade needed). The sorrel is very refreshing when you pluck it and eat it right away while working in the garden during the summer. It’s a little sour and juicy which help when you’re thirsty.
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 4 ай бұрын
Good ideas! I think Egypitian spinach also goes by the name Molokhia? Not sure. And I forfgot to mention edible sorrel, which I think you mean the dark red color kind. I call that one cranberry hibiscus. The leaves have a wonderful cranberry like flavor when harvested young. I got to add it to my list.

That is a great idea. How did you add the other trellis? Like what did you use to make the T posts taller?

I added 2 feet more to the pvc T . Then a 90 degree elbow and connected the two post. After I use twine in front and in back to incase them. I don’t know if you can visualize it, but it looks like an upside U. I had to add it because they grew more than my trellis and the wind was blowing them down. It was a success.

So for plants that are perennials like peppers or indeterminate tomato, can we still start them even though we’re late?
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 4 ай бұрын
Not exactly. You want to start seeds in adnavce, before your last spring frost date and transplant them out once it has passed to capitalize on a long growing season. Or, if your in a hot climate, its the opposite. The summer kills your plants so you want to plant them in fall to grow through winter and spring. Indeterminate tomatoes are not perennials. They are long season annuals.

It almost has a gasoline aftertaste with a bit numbness on the tongue. I wish it was more like cilantro but maybe just don’t recommend it as a substitute for it’s not.
