Happened to me North Shore Oahu bigger face, board hit my head, rig went with wave had to swim to swim out of it equipment 99.9% survived. Thank you for sharing that.

For me saw burble on 32’wave surface in front of me .. Still sounding like a barreling Mack truck wave face hadn’t fully peaked . Only way out was horizontal. For every action there’s equal , opposite reaction: bent knees in a squat pushed boom forward launching myself off the board forward superman in air. Wave crashed behind me didn’t take me with it until Whitewater engulfed to me as tried to swim to find my rig. blessings peace and protection for all our water sports photographers. Kept swimming knowing there was no way to recover my rig traveling too fast. Someone on Shore said “she’s dead “ swimming had energy to wave my arms, Grateful to kiter(Jon, Northshore Oahu) responded grabbed his harness he drug me to safety.

I find it amazing you guys don’t wear helmets, I mean i always wonder whether your gear or sea floor can knock you out..? Is it an ego thing or super uncomfortable or really low perceived risk…, I’m curious..?
