Been waiting a long time for this updated list, great! Also, thanks for the index, a great compromise between spoiler avoidance for first time viewers and utility for those who need to refer to a particular entry.

Thanks for all these top 10 videos you are making, they introduce interesting games I did not know about. I miss seeing the little pieces from the game - it would be great to have one shot included for each game to show how the game looks on the board while playing it - that would add a lot to get a better feel for the game than just seeing the box (although that also gives some idea).

In my experience, I had a lot of success introducing German-boardgame gamers (not young players though) with the Conflict of Heroes Series (2nd edition better than the 1st edition) because of: 1) onion-layered rules 2) simple scenarios supporting the onion-layered rules 3) almost no exceptions and every modificator embedded in damage tokens 4) mounted board and great graphics.

I am trying to get into war gaming and sadly I have not heard of many of these games. Thanks for bringing some games forth and explaining what it is a person really needs to get from playing a particular game to become more proficient in war gaming. I think so many videos out there fail to provide this road map. Good video.

Great video and a great list! I loved the programmed approach to the list, one of the best introductory war game lists yet. Very well thought out and presented. Keep up the great work, love the channel. Two thumbs up on the list! Any honorable mentions that didn't make the top ten list?

STRIKE FORCE ONE is still the "big" tournament at ConsimWorld Expo each year! Also, BATTLE FOR MOSCOW is evolving; BATTLE FOR MOSCOW II is currently in playtesting introducing the new FRANK CHADWICK'S ETO series rules (on one side of the map) and a face-lift of the classic introductory game on the other side of the map. :D

Thanks for the great video! Me and my partner have just started getting into war games and this list is perfect for us! I have one question regarding the rules for 'La Garde recule!', which I was hoping that you could answer. My copy of the rules says that if the modified CD value is greater than the target units defence value the target will take a hit. But to me this seems strange because you score hits so often, as the defence value of most units are quite low compared to the average number on the cards you draw. What do you think about this, is it the way you play too?

Having used a wargame as a WW2 teaching tool (simplified 3R) my anecdotal experience was/is that girls and boys will like most everything else interpret a 'wargame' differently. Girls have a tendency to see them as a 'boys game' at first. I found a way to get them past this is emphasize the social aspects: discussion/negotiating. What I also found was that girls will laser-focus on the victory conditions, whereas the boys will concentrate on the mechanics of play.

Hi Marco, Appreciate the video. This has been a topic on my plate for some time as I'm trying to get some folks at a local gaming club interested. I do have one question/comment. The first game you recommend, "Strike Force One," seems to have been out of print for quite some time--might not be readily available to would-be wargame teachers. Has it been reprinted?

Hi Marco, I am stumped on the recommendation of your 3rd game. I understand you are referencing a print and play system like Junior General but for the life of me I can't quite catch the specific Battle title you were drawing our attention to. Can you provide us with a bit more information. Thanks!

Marco, Did you not consider Risk and Axis & Allies for this list? For me , I started with Risk and then moved on to Axis & Allies (during the 80s) and from there to more complex wargames. But i feel that those 2 games with miniatures and easy rules are easier to get a young child excited about (as opposed to counters).

I think those kinds of strategy board games could use their own vid. But, yes, those were definitely precursors to many of us who later got into hardcore wargaming. I keep copies of Conquest Of The Empire and War! Age Of Imperialism just for the younger ones with less developed reading skills. .. also... As a successful next step up from that, into some hex warfare, I have Battle Cry (not the latest version). IIRC, it's the lightest of the Command & Colors system, having only three troop types and therefore little or no charts & tables needed other than some of the terrain info and the activation cards are generally more straightforward. Also uses minis for the troops so it looks nice & enticing while still having a slight resemblance to the previously mentioned strategy board games.

Marco shocked that you would pick AVD over the original in the series, A Victory Lost. AVL is superior as an introduction to the hobby because it is simpler, feels epic, and full of tension for both sides. AVD takes the system and complicates it with rule exceptions like taking step losses when retreating through ZOC, unlimited range of HQ for movement, air power, and others I don't remember. Where AVL is brilliant in its simplicity and depth, AVD ads complexity to force the system into a different battle. I have a hard time even recommending AVD, while AVL is one of the best wargames out there!!

As a female wargamer I agree that there should be no slant towards a boys game or a girls game. I would just keep the introduction to subject matter that may be of interest of the person being introduced. Do they like aliens, fantasy, civil war, etc...? As much as I like pushing pieces in WWII the other person might not at all find any excitement in the era. Hats off to Marco for keeping it straight to games of interest low complexity and remembering that some rules can be put aside to make the game fun to a new player even in higher detailed games if you are willing to forgo the OCD of the wargaming mind. :)

I'm surprised wings of glory was picked over memoir 44. As an introduction to wargames, surely memoir 44 should be at the top of the list if something like wings of glory makes the list? I get the argument often levelled against memoir... bt still... an introduction to wargames... compared to wings of glory... comes with a all the toy soldiers you need, plenty of updates to keep people interested, introductions to many of the concepts. simplistic, yes, but this is an introduction to younger or new gamers...

+marcowargamer My experience with my own kids is that complexity isn't as important as theme when it comes to getting them to play a game. Complexity I can work around but if the theme doesn't interest them, the complexity of the game (or quality for that matter) makes little difference. For instance, I'll never get them to play a game about Waterloo or Agincourt. This does bring up a point ... It's my opinion that it is it better to use lighter non-war themed boardgames to teach the basic mechanics and then shift them to wargames, than to try to start with a stripped down wargame.
@Paul-nu6vf
@Paul-nu6vf 8 жыл бұрын
+Hedgehobbit and Marco I would agree with what Hedgehobbit wrote. There is a difference between attracting and holding new gamers and teaching young people wargames. If the game or subject doesn't interest them I think you could lose them, no matter how good it is as a teaching tool.

Yeah well, wargames aren't some candy house you try to lure kids into, you haven't to set a trap, just try some games you enjoy, cause you will do a better job at explaining a game you actually enjoy yourself, with good mechanics and who is fun to play. That's what really matter. Good mechanics ok. The star wars theme can make them try the game but what really is going to keep them playing is good rules, good mechanics. And here i think that yes, wings of glory is a better choice than x-wing.

I like Xwing even though I am not a good player of it, but I looked at Wings of Glory and wondered why doesn't community play this instead and almost bought myself a starter set of WoG. While we didn't make most of the mistakes that new players post questions about in the Fantasy Flight FaQ and Errant, I quickly determined that this game is not an easy game to play.

Good for you, Marco. Don't fall into that sexist gap where we define entire hobbies by which color of clothing their fans wear. Games are essentially puzzles to be figured out and a child's capability to learn should be the main factor when determining when tougher games should be introduced to them.

I like a lot of your reviews, however I found this one to be redundant. Wargames to introduce to your daughter? Simply let them choose after making sure they have an interest, and despite your opinion and debate it is quite rare that young girls are interested in board wargames... just look at this thread and show me the dozens of girls/women posting. Having said that, intro wargames so to speak for youngsters would still be othelo, chinese checkers, chess, stratego, draughts, and the like. Anyone under 10-12 simply hasn’t the focus, desire or interest in board wargames, they go for arcade or mobile shootem ups.

Could not disagree more. My son has been playing wargames and other relatively complex wargames since he was 5 or 6. We underestimate how much young minds can absorb.
