As for this performance...it's breathtaking, the sound, the mood, the funkyness....Miller is a sensual musical beast and what a way to collaborate with your band mates...he gives them so much space and credit, and when they come together playing the theme they are spot on. Fantastic.

Too tight, and extremely funky, that cut was. way more funkier than three days I once spent with some more brothers in the field where we had no soap & water until we returned to the rear, we didn't even let the truck park. Olympic 60 meter sprinting to the showers with soap!!! (Tales from a grunt not the hood!!!)

The difference between Marcus and 99% of other even great bassists like say Wooten is that his tone is always impeccable, his timing is unmatched and he can hold a stinky sick groove with just a few notes. He wasnt invited to play on more than 500 albums just for his funky hat! One of the greats!

As you know. at 1959, Miles Davis had composed the music tune titled "so what". And it was played by legendary Miles Davis sextet which was possessing Bill Evans and John Coltrane. Miles Davis had adopted the church scale called D dorian on behalf of the equal temperament into it. And many a Jazz fan had comprehended that "so what" is one of the most excellent Jazz tunes on the modern jazz history. This time, I have to say that "so what "played by Murcas Miller group is pretty nice. The bass sounds which is playing D dorian scale is so thrilling, Moreover the combination between the trumpet and the sax is very attractive. In other words, They have brought an another charm which differs from Miles Davis sextet.
I love their groove. Marcus got the groove. Love Poogie's playing too.

Call me old fashioned...but nothing beats Paul Chambers and Bill Evans tilling the jazz landscape, with their haunting intro- interplay, from the 1959 jazz classic. Then, as if summoned from the netherworld, Miles, 'Trane, and The Cannonball each take their turn sowing the seeds of their prolific solo takes, during that history making session. Solos that have been transcribed, copied, and played for over sixty years but never eclipsed! Just as with all other covers, while certainly good music, for me this is something else entirely. And, just as definitive for me is the fact that nothing else has nor ever will recreate the magic once produced with this opening, and hard-driving prelude through the hallowed halls of Kind of Blue.🎺🎷🎷🥁🎻🎹

It was originally on the rickenbacker bass, and was actually part of the magnetics of the pickup. On fender basses, it's actually just more for cosmetic purposes. James Jamerson used it to anchor his ring and pinky finger while playing with his famous "hook."

i guess that's where our minds work differently. i try not to think too much about the original when listening to a "re-do'. i try to zone in on what the "re-doer" is trying to impart. if it doesn't work for me i just move on. just like how some originals aren't as interesting to me as "re-do's". for the record, i love the original version of "so what " as do my 11 yr old and 9 year old. Brilliant music. I know Marcus is all about groove, funk and the pocket. Seems like you love music as I do!

Anybody that is still wondering what the pickup cover was originally intended as, look up horseshoe magnets, Rickenbacker. It was originally used to create a magnetic field that the strings would vibrate through in the 1930's.
