This culture was hit by twin hurricanes in New Orleans. One was Katrina. The other is gentrification. But the Indians are keeping it alive, in spite of everything. Proud of y'all.

Born and raised in the 9thward, right down the street from the Florida project. Mother and father born and raised in the Desire Project in the 60s and 70s. This is one of many black cultural characteristics that is historically a representation of the real New Orleans. No offense to the French quarters, canal Street,or St. Charles avenue Historical festivities but this is what I grew up witnessing. We have to preserve our BLACK culture because white(newcomers and native whites) trying to make it obsolete and extinct.

Smmfh. You blacks always crying racism & that you feel discriminated but when i hear ya talk....the RACIST ones be YALL. Everything us black this and black that and rarely EVER want to befriend someone from another race. Yet, the whites and Latinos i grew up with were the opposite. COOL with everyone regardless of color race or religion. Maybe Yall should try being more open.

Hi, I support the Indian culture and everything Black New Orleans because without black culture in this city, it would not be beautiful. Period. And I see problematic oppression in our beloved New Orleans, and I am here to APPRECIATE NOT APPROPRIATE black people, art,and culture I'm a white 37 year old woman from metairie Yall keep on, keep loving and taking care of each other and know there are some whites who really do love and want to show yall respect (wish there were more of us) 💟 Jamie

To the black people in the comment section denying Africa. Learn about African drumming, dance, and singing. Ya'll sound ignorant. There's too much evidence with first person accounts, narratives, and artifacts showing Africans were enslaved here. Why don't you people have the intelligence to acknowledge we have both heritages! We have African and Native ancestry! There is no competition! It's not one or the other! Africans started this tradition as a thank you for the Natives who helped them here! Acknowledging and celebrating the relationship between bith groups. Stop crapping on African ancestry. Celebrate both heritages. Smh.

@jacklyneverage3881 Thank you for setting the record straight, it’s ppl claiming this “We are Indigenous”mess that are hijacking the actual tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians also known as Black Masking Indians. The actual history was that Black New Orleanians started dressing up as Native Americans to pay homage to the Indigenous ppl whom helped African Americans escape from slavery & survive in the Louisiana wilderness, it’s been a tradition since the late 19th century. This is common knowledge amongst Black ppl of NO. These outside ppl, whom are Not even familiar with the tradition, are literally trying to erase Black American culture, saying we are Not of African descent when New Orleans was actually a major slave port & played a significant role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, more men, women, & children were brought to New Orleans & sold in slave markets than any other city in the country. New Orleans is actually considered the most Africanized city in the U.S., the influence of the enslaved West Africans can be seen thru the music to the cuisine. Black Americans developed our own culture in America but Not without some African influences, especially New Orleans. As American descendants of slaves we are of African ancestry to include admixtures due to slavery such as European & some Native ancestry. Those that are legit AA/Native acknowledged both sides of their ancestry, which is something this new small subset of Black ppl don’t subscribe to & in the process they are claiming AA traditions as their own & completing erasing the significance of our African ancestry in the culture. I’m noticing more Black Americans starting to push back bcuz it is erasure of our culture that we originated as American descendants of slaves.

I would love to have help. I was wondering what would I have to do to preform for my culture. I plan on going when Mardi Gras starts. I have family linage, and I’m creole(black,Irish, native) I would love to represent all the way from NY. If anyone have any advice please let me know. Evening enrolling in one!
