i literally fall to pieces every time i hear this. What a gift my mother (RIP) gave me, introducing this back woods country boy to such beautiful music because she wanted her son to be well rounded. I lack the vocabulary to describe the beauty of Maria's voice. She captured the very essence of life with this song.

Her performance and vocal quality is unmatched. Never before, nor has there been since, a soprano with such crystal-clarity in her upper register. She brought this song to life and the emotion she showed choked me up. That's hard to do to me. However, she managed it. The only ones I have seen come close are Montserrat Caballe and Anna Netrebko; and even then they are still light-years behind her. Not the easiest person to deal with, she had the voice and talent to back her diva behavior. Maria Callas and this performance transcend age, ethnic background, and genres. Simply sublime!

No one could so far translate this beautiful aria in so much emotions as the great Callas did. Divina assoluta.

Oh my God .. Every time I hear this song I'm crying ..

Many years ago I had a voice teacher who saw Callas in Madame Butterfly. She said Callas missed a few notes but her acting and vocal skills were so good that nobody cared. She said that by the end Callas had the audience convinced she was actually going to kill herself right there on stage. Kinda gruesome but speaks to the talent of Callas.

This was like an unexpected and most beautiful flower. Well she was a music genius and this simple aria was probably a piece of cake for her i.e. to sense what Puccini had in mind in terms of melody, dynamics etc. But what strikes me the most here is her facial expressions/acting. Her sheer transformation to a girl in love (no doubt) who uses her girlish charm trying to convince her father. She succeeds in reflecting both a girlish cunningness and naivety! And at the same time being so sweet in her anguish. How she did that?! The same woman who acted Medea, Norma and Lady Macbeth. The voice also is very fresh for age I think. Fantastic!
