Oh boy. There would be a tsunami of unnecessary procedures performed if this was implemented. Terrible idea. Recommendations are made based on risk vs benefit, and clearly the risk of unnecessary interventions following up on things that aren't cancer is a bigger risk than possibly the tiny percentage that will turn out to be malignant. If it were as simple as a scan being sensitive AND specific they would already be doing it. There is no great conspiracy about cancer being too lucrative to cure. The fact is that cancer is thousands of diseases, and there will not ever be a single cure, nor a single test that will be effective for early intervention.

You'll increase your risk for cancer with an annual full-body MRI and the MRI itself won't do much good. You'll find a ton of abnormalities and you can't investigate all of them unless you have matching symptoms. It will never happen.

My mother died of biliary duct cancer which was at first diagnosed as pancreatic. However she spent months going to the doctors here in California and doctors kept dismissing her symptoms. We had to go to T.J Baja California to find out what was wrong. She advocated for herself but let's be real it's easier for people with money to survive this than the average person. I'm so happy for her! Rarely is pancreatic cancer found at such an early stage. The only thing that absolutely grieves my heart about this and so many other diseases is the fact that everyday people who don't have excess money or know people in high places will continue to die from a disease that we were all led to believe can't be caught early! This is proof that it actually can be caught early with the right scan at the right time. Many everyday people have had 'a feeling' that something was wrong but when the doctor sent them home they had no where else to turn. A full body scan can cost as much as 10K, but even lower end is a couple grand and not everyone can afford that.😢

Her type of pancreatic cancer is different than the typical pancreatic cancer which is found at stage 4. She had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor which is slow growing and usually not deadly. These tumors are found earlier bc they often come along with symptoms at an earlier stage. I know this bc my son had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor also. I appreciate what she’s trying to do, but her tumor is very different than the most common type of pancreatic cancer which doesn’t usually have symptoms until stage 4.

@lizzieadeseye2328 Жыл бұрын
@@smpirrelloThat is interesting and certainly helps shed more light on the situation and how hers may have been caught earlier with symptoms. With that being said, I still think her chances would have been a little more bleak if she didn't have the financial resources and health information that she had access to, especially considering that her doctors sent her home even though she was displaying symptoms. I also think that celebrities and those who are wealthy are made aware of things like full body scans for tumors and blood vessels and so on and so forth, all paid out of pocket - and most of these screenings would be beneficial for everyday people who are not able to live the lifestyles that they are living. I appreciate the additional information as it is pertinent, I do contend that these screenings should be made available to the general population somehow either with annually check up or every few years to increase the number of lives that could be saved. Kudos to her for using her platform to help others.

PSA: Maria does NOT have pancreatic cancer. She has Neuroendocrine cancer that happened to present in her pancreas. (Likewise with Aretha Franklin & Steve Jobs). They were all reported incorrectly, and then PCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network) were only too happy to go public with Maria on this. It took the limelight away from neuroendocrine cancer (NETS) which desperately needs awareness and funding. It is irresponsible to say that Maria has beaten pancreatic cancer. Very important to know the difference as they have differing symptoms. Neuroendocrine is non-aggressive & people often live a long time with quality of life, whereas pancreatic cancer is very aggressive. The treatments are entirely different, requiring a team of specialists in the appropriate field.

@@mcd5478 I'm involved with NETS and this has been a contentious issue in general as it has been reported incorrectly too many times. It's a shame as neuroendocrine cancer desperately needs more awareness, not just for FUNDING but also to implement campaigns so everyone is AWARE of the symptoms - both for unaware sufferers and doctors so they can PICK it UP EARLY.

Our daughter had surgery in March to remove a benign cyst from her pancreas. She is going to sonography school and students were doing test sonograms on each other. Their instructor saw my daughters sonogram and the large cyst on her pancreas. My daughter had no symptoms of any type. The cyst was removed along with her spleen and surrounding lymph nodes. Her surgeon told her that the sonogram class saved her life. When these cyst start causing problems it is usually too late. Maria was very lucky. Our daughter is doing great and she was blessed with a great surgeon. Also, she works for a large online company in their distribution center. She had excellent insurance benefits - sonogram, 2 different types of MRIs, endoscopy and then the surgery. She works and goes to sonography school.

Yes it's true her money and public influence helped her but she clearly realizes that there are major inequalities in the Healthcare system. She clearly stated she will advocate until full body MRI is covered by insurance for everyone. She does not have to do this. She wants to do it because she knows it's unfair and that she would not be alive today if not for that scan. Her doctors dismissed her symptoms too. However they could not argue with the results of the full body MRI. If you were privileged you would use any means necessary to save yourself too. Anyone would.

Lost My Aunt Last year to Pancreatic Cancer she was only 48 and the Drs Kept on saying her pain was imaginary and she must be an alcoholic and her "diet" was causing this (we saw what they wrote in her files after) she only drank once or twice a week and beer at that. She was Healthy as a horse and not overweight by any means- she was very active and had 0 issues before this. NONE. She never had anything even close to a health scare or any surgeries. They misdiagnosed her multiple times over the course of a year and by the time they "found" it she was stage 4 and she left 5 children and grandchildren, her brand new home she just moved into in less than 1 month... My Other Aunt on my husband's side same thing! they caught it at stage 4 and she started chemo only to waste away in 6 months she passed 1 month after my first aunt... They really don't care if you are a POC or a woman or someone they think is "poor" that's the experience my family had. THEY WILL ABSOLUTELY Write lies in your files!!! and those lies WILL influence other Drs reading those notes! Request your files and address them! That bias can be the difference that could save your life. * Same thing with Drs Notes- Killed my Best friend who had HIV and because of the biases and lies they did not give him proper medical support" Yes Some Drs will LIE to cover themselves and save their butts. Some Play GOD and belive they are right in doing this. I hope the wonderful Drs rise to the top and these blights on Modern Medicine get exactly what they deserve.

They found it, early! Because of that, they did the Whipple procedure and as of this month she is still cancer-free after 3 years. She never had any other treatment. She and our family are blessed to still have her around. And so when I hear of someone having pancreatic cancer, I know it's probably a death sentence unless it's caught early. And God gave us a miracle of 5 years with him and then a small spot appeared. He volunteered to receive a treatment in a Little Rock hospital. They tried a treatment used in breast cancer and it destroyed his liver. It's very important that you hold your loved ones up in prayer to the Lord and always have a positive attitude. What’s devastating is most people do not have the money, or insurance to cover early testing. Nor do they have a community of doctors and specialists who can get them in, or spend time with a patient. People go for their check ups, tell their doctor what’s bothering them and it’s not seriously looked into- the answer is usually “ take this prescription, it will help”. Someone very close to me died of pancreatic cancer… because throughout all the doctors visits, it wasn’t a “priority “ to do testing. It was discovered at stage 4. The health system MUST do better!!!

I was diagnosed and had a massive surgery for my Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Cancer in my early 30s. Was misdiagnosed for years and years. I was told my stomach issues, vomiting and pain was IBS, Anxiety, hormones, and was told to eat a cracker to help with the debilitating nausea, that I needed to lose weight to feel better, that after menopause my hormones would settle down and I would feel better, was told to quit worrying. I had to MAKE someone find the tumor. It took years. The tumor was even found after a car wreck and was misdiagnosed as a cyst. I was also sent to physical therapy for the pain in my back which was actually my pancreas eating itself from the acid. Still, I had to go through multiple GI doctors before I found my current pancreas specialist who correctly diagnosed the quarter sized tumor as a PNET. The exact same thing happened years later with my heart. I told numerous cardiologists something was wrong with my heart bc I was passing out, sweating and having chest pains. Tests showed nothing. Same old treatment from the doctors: it’s stress, it’s your stomach, it’s anxiety. I was PASSING OUT and they said it was stress. After 3 years of heart related symptoms I was brought to my knees by chest pains. I went to the ER and refused to leave, arguing for 24 hours as they tried to get me to leave. I refused to leave bc I knew I would die. Finally, my first heart cath revealed The Widow Maker and 98% LAD blockage. I had a CABG that failed and 2 days later had to have another CABG after dying twice in the hospital. I even had to tell them I was dying, there in the hospital bed, before they realized my heart was filling with blood from the leaking repair that they had just done. So…my advise is keep on demanding help until you get an answer. Some doctors try a little, some don’t know enough, some situations are just really complex, some doctors only see the obvious and look no further, some doctors really care but still can’t help, and some doctors discriminate if you are a woman. YOU HAVE TO BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE.

@@pandapower5902I have been an RN for 26 yrs, and there are MDs who are just dismissive by nature. They will dismiss men and women equally. You need a different doctor. The issues you describe do cause abdominal pain and GI issues, therefore, it's not abnormal to have those symptoms. I also have endometriosis and fibroids, and when I ovulate, I feel like I am having appendicitis. There are many GI issues that I suffer from. Some due to those problems, some not. If you think it's something else, get a second opinion from a different doctor. You don't have to stay with the same one you don't like.

This is really such insightful advice. I love how she is advocating for this to be covered by insurance. The reality is that a lot of people who do have something early in the stages most likely are aware of something going on in their body, but the fear or lack of resource for covering the costs deters them from being seen and helped. We just need to be aware of the resources we have for help. Our health is number one.
