Pancreatic cancer is tough to diagnose, and tough to treat. Not everyone will experience every symptom, however it is important to be aware of any changes and talk to your GP if you are concerned.
In this video, we talk to people who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, as well as the families of those who have supported people living with the disease.

My father-in-law, who died in the 1970s, diagnosed himself with pancreatic cancer, and since he was a doctor and a specialist in Internal Medicine, that should have meant something. However, his own doctor and colleagues in the clinic where he worked didn't agree with him. He even went to the Mayo clinic (from Canada) and was also told there he didn't have pancreatic cancer. He ended up actually getting shock treatments for depression because no one believed he had cancer. And yet, he managed to die of pancreatic cancer. Such a sad and disturbing story.

...it's beyond sad. But you know, Linda, this dismissive attitude toward a person's concerns, coupled with the drs ignoring symptoms, is very common. I could list ten times in my life when doctors just dropped the ball, for both myself and family. And here's a man who's a doctor, telling them his diagnosis,, and they rejected him. My God, if they didn't listen to a doctor, what chance do we have? So sorry he had such horrible abandonment by his peers, no less.

My Grandpa has it, the doctors said they don't know if it's spread they give him one year at most and said the tests to see if it spread cannot be conducted because he would never survive the testing. How can they give him a year when they don't know how much damage it's doing?

My dad was so healthy he was 64 years old but looked so young. He didn’t drink, smoke and went to the gym all the time and walked everywhere. In November he started with back pain and the doctor did a blood test and sent him for a scan, he was diagnosed with the worst type of pancreatic cancer you could get. He lost weight so rapidly and within two days of being diagnosed he was in hospital. My dad passed away 4 weeks later, unfortunately this cancer needs more testing it’s awful

I don't know what test this family used, but one blood test that tests pancreatic enzymes is trycyglycerol lipase. The result of this test may then warrant further investigation with U/S, CT, MRI, or MRCP.

@@grandmemaw3605 I feel your pain😭My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the head of the pancreas in December 2016 a few days later he was having the Whipple procedure that Dr. Ittings, oncologist. He struggled and struggled at age 60. After two months in a hospital, he was cancer free but he couldn’t receive the amount of chemo that he needed because it was a battle with the chemo doctor and the insurance company! It went on for a few months. Now we’re talking June July, he felt fairly good. But August/September, he was showing signs of relapse but it wasn’t showing up on any test/scans. It actually didn’t show up on any scans until October 2017. It had spread throughout his entire body by that point. There was nothing they could really do and he passed away in May 2018. I think if he would have been able to get all of the chemo and the strong chemo that he needed but he couldn’t tolerate, he may have been around a little longer. But the horrific pain he was in due to the procedure of the Whipple difficult. It’s taking me four years to Function again. Was the love of my life and he always will be. Doctors need to get better at detecting these issues because he complained for over 15 years of acid reflux and that’s what they in stomach issues and they just kept pushing it off and giving him the Zantac which you know causes cancer, other ant acids calling in everything from anxiety to stomach ulcers!! Boy were they wrong! Had they have scanned his pancreas and took a chance they would’ve found it much earlier. I blame the doctors they just either don’t want to I don’t care. Well he’s home with the Lord now And not in pain anymore longer.

The frustrating thing is that even if you go to your GP or hospital with any of these symptoms - knowing something isn't right; you are highly likely to be sent home multiple times without proper investigations. Stomach pain/back pain/indigestion/itching is largely treated in the first/second/third/fourth instance with painkillers and antibiotics/antacids. Sadly I lost my dear mother very suddenly to this awful disease after multiple trips to her doctor and years (retrospectively) of symptoms. She was never jaundiced, but by the time she was diagnosed she was a few weeks from her death. Unfortunately, physicians rarely take such 'vague' symptoms seriously and the healthcare system (at least in the UK) doesn't seem to support scanning for potential issues before they become catastrophic. Something needs to change. I implore anyone reading this to be your own best advocate and be insistent if you feel something is not right. I miss my mother so so much, every day.

Our journey took 9.5 months, never thought I would be here, and convinced myself that we would be in the luckiest survivor group. My mom suffered so much; 2 major Whipple surgeries, and lots of chemo sessions with a three-month hospital stay in only less than a year. So sorry for her, too much pain to bear… I was fully aware of all possible outcomes, even in earlier stages and the survival rates, but strongly believed that we could at least have min. 2-3 years to spend and fight for it. Never imagined it would last 9.5 months. I’m not telling how all surgeries, treatments, and chemotherapies were delivering excellent results for the first 8 months as doctors were stating… maybe was an illusion… But everything we built up, improved, and achieved all family unified with solidarity collapsed in a month with an abdominal metastasis. I don't have any words to say, just holding my tears and the pain left in my chest and heart. No words to say. 🖤

What bothers me the most is that by the time most pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, it's almost too late for most people. A simple CT scan of the entire chest and abdomen would help to rule out masses. Most GPs don't order scans right away, they order blood work. Doctors need to be more aware that many cancers are occuring in even younger people so nothing should be off the table when looking for clues as to a person's condition.

I had all of these symptoms floating poo itching, pain from my front to my back, like a hot poker boring through my body, could not eat absolutely no energy, and chronic jaundice. I had the whipple operation, lost my bile duct duedenum gall bladder and third of my pancreas the cancer was 1.9 cm. I was very lucky my Spanish GP knew what I had just by looking at me , my eyes and skin were yellow and I was scratching. He sent me straight to hospital for a full blood count, my liver was a mess, I then went back to my GP at 2pm and He looked at my results and sent me straight to A&E where I stayed for nearly 3 weeks until they found where the tumour was. I hope my account will save someone’s life. Go straight to your docs if you have any of these symptoms

Just one other symptom is my pee was the colour of cola, prior to my operation to remove the cancer I had 2 stents at different times inserted into my bile duct to open it up , I was then able to eat and keep food down , I lost 17 kilograms in weight was a long process of recovery. My cancer type was adinocarcinoma , I am now 7 years clear and was lucky enough to be in the area in Spain where they specialised in this type of cancer and operation and have the equipment and knowledge,I thank Spain every day for saving my life . @nano2424 I just think that at that point when he had the CT it wasn't there yet or it was maybe very very small and they just couldn't see it and it just grew extremely fast unfortunately. I once saw a pt. with vague digestive complaints and other complaints that made me suspicious enough to order an abd. CT scan. It was read as unremarkable by very good radiologists. Complaints persisted and about 3 wks. later I had an MRI done. Negative again. A few more weeks passed and the pt. was not worse but no better. I suggested a repeat CT or MRI, don't remember which. The pt's. insurance company indicated that they would not pay for a repeat study. I told the pt. that and he said that he would pay for it. Report: Very suspicious for pancreatic cancer. He was operated and was apparently cured. Often in diagnosing disease a high index of suspicion and an awareness of the limitations of diagnostic studies as well as tenacity are required.

Thanks for making this video. Our 'health service' fails to keep us healthy and while sometimes makes heroic efforts to combat our illnesses, really should be better educating the public about the various early warning signs for many diseases. It shouldn't fall upon survivors to try and educate the rest of us - but I admire the fact they do.

I'm genuinely curious about the cost ££ comparisons between sending a patient for a scan in the initial stages of unexplained persistent symptoms (with the 'risk' that it could be nothing serious) - and the eventual cost of radical surgery, radiation & months of chemotherapy drugs & inpatient admissions, after which the patient may still require hospice/palliative care. Why are the 'heroic' later efforts preferred over just investigating issues at an early stage? I agree with you - something needs to change. x

People MUST take full responsibility for their health. A doctor does not know everything and remember that many doctors are after their bottom line. Sources of information about virtually every thing are available. ALL cancers are curable by herbs but Big Pharma together with their cahoots cannot allow it since it is a multibillion industry for a select few. Some doctors do it underground to help a lot of people.

My Dad died in 1996 at 41 years old of pancreatic cancer. He worked up until 2 weeks before passing. It all happened so suddenly! His doctor (our family doctor) felt as though my Dad was a hypochondriac. He was actually there about his ankle which had swollen, and the testing led to other things which led to the diagnosis. I may not even be remembering it all right because I was only 10. Aside from the working part, I do remember that - and we have his agenda where he just ...stopped writing things down. He stopped planning. My Dad worked at a pigment plant in his early 20's called Ciba-Geigy -- my Mom told me that he would have blue stuff come out of his pores when he slept. He became an electrician and eventually worked into management at the local electricity company a few years before passing. I do remember at the time our state had very high cancer rates.

Get a screening ultrasound every year. Ask for "CPT 76700 abdominal complete." It can detect small abnormalities and tumors early. Then, you go for a CT if something looks wrong. Don't let "your insurance won't pay for it" stop you. Go to an imaging clinic, should only be $60 - $120 self pay. This ultrasound also detects aortic aneurysm and liver disease!

My father-in-law got horribly constipated about 2-3 months before the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. His wife took him to the ER after they went to the gym. He was going to get on a treadmill and sat down and told her he couldn’t move. He looked up at her an his eyes were all yellow and the weakness was severe. He was told if he took chemotherapy he would last one year. If he didn’t he would last one month. He went to chemotherapy one time and couldn’t get out of bed. He couldn’t continue. He died two weeks after the gym incident. My birth family I found five years ago said every woman on my mother’s side dies of pancreatic cancer before they reach 75. I tell my doctors this and they ignore me. What to do. I went through five doctors in two years we’ve been in Boca Raton. They are horrible here.

@Michele Dietrich Reading your comments, and hoping you've found a better kind of doctor by now in Boca Raton. One thought about the medical history in your birth family, maternal side. It's too easy for a doctor or specialist to discount what their patients SAY. But if you presented them with any copies of medical docs from your birth relatives, or a printed summary of these medical histories (with names, locations, dates of birth & death, dates of diagnosis, treatment received - anything relevant!) and ask for that information to go into your file. THEN there's some hard evidence for your doctors to refer to. Date your documents and keep your own copies. With medical evidence of your birth family's history, you'd hope that would lead to more intelligent care of you! 🙏

bring back memories,my lifepartner passed away to pancreatic cancer. he was only 43,always healthy, lived active life, never drinked or eated junk food. he found out at the stage 4, it was in so bad place that they coudnt operate on him. chemo didnt really do much, other than made him sick, so he decided to stop chemo and live happy life as long as he could with just cleaning body, juicing, intermitting fasting and he did had almost 4yrs. even with chemo it wasnt guarantee that he would of lived, and he wasnt really living because it made him so sick. to be able to work and train and do normal things, he had to stop chemo. its been 7yrs since he passed away.

I took my father to the ER two weeks ago for severe jaundice and they immediately started all blood work, CT scan, CA-19-9 tumor marker, ultra sound and a few other things I can’t remember. They admitted him to the hospital and the next day they tried a scope to see down in his his pancreas and open up the blocked bile duct from obstruction but was not successful due to large mass that they couldn’t pass to open duct. So they had to put in a biliary bag from liver to the outside of his body to relieve jaundice symptoms immediately. Then a few days later they took biopsy of mass and it came back a adenocarcinoma in the head of the pancreas. So to give a little back ground I live 3 hours away from my father and don’t see him constant, the last time before all this was Dec 17th 2021 for a week for his birthday and the next week he saw his regular doctor for X-rays since his acid reflux was getting worse and several prescribed medicines were not working over the coarse of a year. At this time he was normal looking, went to doctors office normal looking and by the time I got a phone call which was on January 20th saying his skin color was looking different and I needed to come home and took him to the ER because he wouldn’t take himself. He HATES hospitals! So in less than a month since seeing his primary care doctor he had lost 20 pounds, lost complete appetite, brown urine, could hardly walk he was so weak, and the other symptoms were not as sudden like: (had been having side back pain that migrated up to shoulder blade for a while but he just thought was age and put lidocaine cream on it constantly), (severe acid reflux which had been happening for over year). He stayed in hospital for over a week trying to get him stabilized and was sent home, he is still hardly able to walk, no appetite which oncologist prescribed a appetite enhancer today to see if that would help because he couldn’t even raise his head up yesterday. His reflux thank goodness has subsided substantially with the biliary back and next week will be getting an internal stent replacement, In the next few weeks he will be having MRI and PET scans to see staging, I pray for all the people and families this affects, it is truly a ravishing and devastating disease. We are in shock as I’m sure most are.

@@PancreaticCancerUK My Dad passed away in 1998 aged 64 - the only one of 7 children to succumb to this Cancer. My aunt is still alive and well, my uncles all suffered from cardiac issues. What I remember is this: He loved to eat processed meat, he drank a great deal of Coke as he felt it assisted with digestion. I do not remember a time when he did not rely on laxatives and antacids. He worked as a fitter and turner, drank alcohol and smoked (not a lot but still!). Chronic periodontal disease (refused to go to the Dentist), had his Gallbladder removed in the early 70s and loved to eat Pork Belly. When he drank red wine, even the good stuff, he would dilute it with lemonde. He consumed copious amounts of Aspirin as he was a migraine sufferer. He also worked shift 40 years (through the night). Never exercised, had a boat, loved to fish but would never eat Fish. All factual and not a figment of my imagination. I was in my 30s when he passed away 6 months after diagnosis.

@@jilkev115 Thanks so much! I just went for my scan yesterday (22/04). Results should be available by end of this week and will be sent to my GP first. My GP appointment is scheduled for next Tuesday. I’m very worried because I’m having pain in my abdomen after every meal even though I’m taking 20mg Esomeprazole daily. I hope it’s not cancer. I’ve shared my health issues on my KZfaq channel and will do an update video when I have answers to all the issues found recently.

Besides pale poo, recurring, increasing left side back pain, how can I tell otherwise if I have dark skin? My nails, palms of hands, eyes?
@PancreaticCancerUK
@PancreaticCancerUK Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your question. If you have recurring pale poo and back pain, we'd recommend you to talk to your GP/Doctor about what you're experiencing. As for jaundice, it usually begins in the whites of the eyes first, so this is something to look out for, as well as dark urine and itchiness. You can read more about pancreatic cancer symptoms here: www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/information/signs-and-symptoms-of-pancreatic-cancer/ and can also call our specialist nurses for free on 0808 801 0707 if you'd like some support.

put pressure on them... I have had digestional issues for months but did not think much of it.. Then suddenly nearly 4 weeks ago I started to get stomac cramps. this week a back pain.. the last two days i get symptoms of what looks like early onset of diabetes (high bloodsugar when fasting, 6,6).. contacted the health care.. they did some blood work but not looking for cancer.. (this was two weeks ago).. I discovered a lump in my backhead which I can't recall I have had before.. Last visit yeasterday i was brushed of (said that is was stress and i got a package of omarprazol) ,, I had a bloodsugar level of 6.3 after a 5k walk and just having an apple after the walk,, The apple was digested at least 1.5 hours before so bloodsugar at 6.3 seems high.. I have given them a stool sample.. So I think the symptoms have progressed quickly and will go and bang the doors today to talk to a doctor about it.. THe blood work last week was on different beta cells of the immune symptoms but showed no infection. If I have a fast growing tumor (secondary tumor) the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and maybe got 5 weeks left or less.. feels sureal to come to this conclusion.. I have two wonderfull kids at 4 and 7.. I have worked with radiation and a cancerogenic substance as a pH.D student some 15 years ago.. The worst past is that IBS, stress, high glykos leves are related and people coming in with these symptoms are dismissed.

How is pancreatic cancer diagnosed? Is there a test or MRI?
@PancreaticCancerUK
@PancreaticCancerUK Жыл бұрын
There are a number of different tests that can be used to diagnose pancreatic cancer and you may need several tests to work out what's causing your symptoms. An MRI scan may be used alongside blood tests, ultrasounds, CT scans, to name a few. You can find out more about these different tests on our website: www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/information/how-is-pancreatic-cancer-diagnosed/tests-for-pancreatic-cancer/

I lost a close friend a few years ago to pancreatic cancer. He did a lot of traveling that summer and sent me a photo of him. I saw he had lost a lot of weight and he replied he hadn't done anything special. I figured he was starving himself and lying about it. Then he sent me a picture a couple of months later and he was yellow. I told him something was wrong and go see a doctor. He did 3 months later and he was told it's too late we can't help you. 3 weeks later he was dead. RIp Kev. jw

What about a CT Scan that shows a 1.2 cm cyst has formed on the pancreas. Is that or is it not a cause for concern? I am finding my GP Doctor here in the states, is showing no signs of concern. Reason being it has been a week since I notified him of the results, that were given to me in the Hospital Emergency Room. I have yet to hear back from the GP. I went to the ER because I had abdominal pain and days of Acid Reflux. I am a Diabetic and my Dad died of Pancreatic Cancer exactly 1 week after he was diagnosed. I remember he had similar symptoms that I am having, just a few months before the cancer diagnosis. Look how fast it took his life after diagnosis.

Why don’t they do a ct scan for pancreatic cancer every year?
@PancreaticCancerUK
@PancreaticCancerUK 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. Unlike for other cancers, there are currently no screening programmes or simple tests to diagnose pancreatic cancer, though a CT scan with an injection of dye may be one test could be used to diagnose pancreatic cancer. You can read more about the different tests that may be used here: bit.ly/3QJt9jO including the breath test that our researchers are hard at work developing. Unfortunately, population-wide screening is unlikely because of multiple factors including the vagueness of early symptoms, though this doesn't mean that screening programmes for those sub-populations with relevant risk factors are ruled out. We hope this helps!

You said it right there! If you’re feeling symptoms you have a better chance of being diagnosed if you go to your doctor. “A better chance”😂 A better chance than what? Because most people complain for years and the stupid doctors don’t do a darn thing about it people have to beg for scans and other stuff. This is not because people most people don’t know the signs and symptoms! Most people don’t know the signs and symptoms of any cancer.!!!! The survival rate for pancreatic cancer is almost 0! Yeah you might survive for a while and put it off and put it off for a while but once you have cancer cells they’re there you’re just gonna come back like with most cancer somewhere down the line but with pancreatic cancer they come back almost immediately. Doctors need to be the ones that are vigilant and do more testing they need to know the signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer so that without a doubt they can say well we’re just gonna try this and put the patients in some tests instead of waiting for the patience to do all the research 😤

Fully agree with this. You can even be aware of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer and bring it up to your doctor and they still brush off your concerns. A family friend had back pain and other symptoms and told her doctor that after researching all her symptoms, she felt it pointed to pancreatic cancer. Doctor’s response? Scoffed, said “Chances are 1 in a million.” Didn’t order any scans. Assumed it was back pain so she was sent for back surgery. She did have lifelong back pain but this pain was different and worse. Back surgery caused her more pain. She was in misery. They went in AGAIN and found her pancreatic cancer. Dead the next month. She told her doctor that from her research her symptoms could be pancreatic cancer and he still brushed it off. Doctors have to be more proactive in ordering imaging. The argument that “too many scans will cause false positives and overwhelm the system” doesn’t make any sense. Doctors are treating for the wrong illness in many cases - this poor woman having needless surgery is an example. Or doctors put patients on meds which is a waste of resources and precious time. Doctors’ refusal to scan for a highly lethal cancer happens over and over and they are never held accountable.

Your poo does Chang color normally .it's green if you eat spinach, it can be dark chocolate if you ate a lot of it , or a reddish brown if you drink v 8 or collard with red dye ,a lot of bananas or potatoes make it more yellow . Get a second opinion , 1 in 5 diagnosis are incorrect.
