I still remember this iconic match vividly like it was only yesterday. This match is arguably the most surprising loss for Sharapova in her career. Sharapova (21 years old back then) coming into the match with THREE grand slam trophies under her belt, fresh coming off from Australian Open win, was ranked #1 few months before, hot favorite in Wimbledon (2004 won, 2005-2007 lost to eventual champion; 2005 SF to V Williams, 2006 SF to Mauresmo, 2007 4R to V Williams). She's a HUGE- huge favorite in this match, that's why this result was very surprising. Who would have thought few months later after this match Sharapova would have a career-threatening shoulder injury, and would never have won non-clay slam titles anymore in her career. This match was a turning point before she turned into Claypova.
