Sharapova is a better shot maker but I think overall Svetlana is a more skilled tennis player and a superior athlete for sure. But yes, mental toughness is the biggest difference between Sharapova and the other Russian players. Dementieva said back in 2005 that she thinks this is because she trained at Boliterri Academy, whereas back in Russia the academies focused more on technicalities and physical training and almost nothing on the mental aspects of tennis and competing.

Ehh I think in terms of skill, Maria was a tad bit better. Yeah Sveta was the better athlete, but that serve was easy pickings if she was too safe with it along with her strokes.

@@KH-sn2sj IDK Sharapova is a great ball striker, one of the best (afterall not many players could win so much with a one dimensional game, it's a testament to how good she could strike the ball) however I'd say Svetlana had much better volleys, drop shots, slice, creativity. Sharapova struggled with volleys throughout her career, and added the drop shot in the latter stages of her career which, while effective, was very mechanical and not natural for her. She had a mean backhand slice though.

I agree, but she could not be as consistent as Maria was and lacked her mental focus. Tennis wise she was more various and much more speedy and powerful, pity she ended up with only two slams and four finals
