Gosh I miss watching Justine play, especially that beautiful and supreme backhand

2 handed backhand from both sides. Unorthodox maybe. But she beat them all.

JC was too overweighted, she could barely move. And most of her returns were, although strong, too short

Martina played quite well here. Far too often against Monica she would play erratic tennis with a slew of easy unforced errors.

I was there. Great match by Anna who had looked to be finally making her big breakthrough after some good wins that year. Sadly though she won this match, she'd fallen badly on her hand (i think) and pulled out of the next round. She was out injured for many months and all the momentum she'd built in 1998 disappeared. She was never the same player again. My recollection of Steffi (always a sore loser) was her whining and complaining throughout the match, with a face like thunder. Always made me laugh when Steffi is portrayed as this classy model of sportsmanship, when she wasn't at all particularly when she'd lost or was losing. Superb player no doubt, but not the 'classy' sportswoman she's made out to be.

monica was in the stands watching this one and spanked graf in the Quarterfinals... agree with some of the posts on here MJ should have put away that French open final in 93... graf had that extra "champion" chip that got her through some many tough matches

Sampras celebrating with a 4th round win like it was the final. .... and then he lost in straight sets to Hewitt in the final, lol. Sampras was disrespectful to Rafter in general. I used to be a Sampras fan until he became arrogant and I noticed him disrespecting Rafter. Maybe Sampras was arrogant all along, and I just didn't notice it until later. I became a Rafter fan in the mid '90s and always rooted for him to win. He was one of the best serve and volley tennis players of all time, in my opinion. Stefan Edberg of course was in that elite group of serve and volley players. I always loved to watch serve and volley tennis.

You forget how good Venus was because her career was impeded by her sister. Venus easily wins double digit majors if it werent for Serena.

From what I remember back then (36 years???? wow, time flies), Zvereva was fighting with the Russian federation over prize money. Reporters asked her about her runner-up check afterwards, thinking they had to say SOMETHING upbeat to her, and her response was something like "Who cares? Russia gets everything I earn!" She had a terrible attitude at the time, likely deservedly, and before the match she was asked something like does she think she can beat Steffi and her terse response was NO. I'd have thought she'd fight for at least ONE game. No one wants to lose 60 60, but maybe she did. She really was pissed at Russian fed.

If you see carefully most of the crowd left after 3rd set…Guess got bored with that same type of tennis of big serve first volley and finish either with the volley or passing shot..No point lasted more than 3 shots 😂
