Mariah Carey, America the Beautiful

From King Louie's Video Vault: Mariah Carey burst onto the national stage with this performance of "America the Beautiful" at the 1990 NBA Finals. This has been posted before @ KZfaq, but with lower quality. (I'd programmed my SVHS machine to record the game, then kept the tape because of the great performance by this then-unknown singer.)
Testament to Mariah's instant impact: pro athletes usually tune out the national anthem, but this rendition left John Salley of the Detroit Pistons shaking his head. OK, Coach Daly was apparently less impressed. :-)

Her first 3-4 years in the spotlight was her vocal prime. Her "Mariah whistle" may have put some strain on her vocals over the course of those few years. Her mother opposed to her singing like that, as it can physcially damage the vocals. Turned out she can still do it many years later but not as often and frequent as she did in her early years.

Calm down lol. When MJ debuted the moonwalk, Thriller was already becoming a cultural phenomenon, he had been in the business for more than 10 years by then even though he was under 25 yrs old, released Off The Wall a few years prior which was the biggest breakout album of the time and broke several records, gave leeway/steam for his album Thriller to break racial barriers in the music industry, and his performance alone became The Standard for many performers even to this very day. This performance for Mariah was more like when Michael/Jackson 5 was "introduced" to America on Ed Suvillan. I love Queen Mariah, but what you wrote wasn't a valid comparision at all.

There is no credible list in the world where Whitney's chopped up vocals full of overused head notes and mid belts will.surpass Mariah's vocal range, agility and talent. Watch and weep as Whitney is ranked at number 5 below Veronica Amorosso while Mariah is ranked on top in note by note comparisons. Educate yourself since even in your shit hole Covid infested country Mariah is the queen and copied by everyone. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gr91oLBiurvGmWQ.html

In 1990, Mariah's debut song Vision of Love was not #1 yet, it was still at #73 at the Billboard chart in June 2. And this game was at June 5, so basically most people in that stadium didn't know who she was and didn't pay close attention to this precious historic event.

this performance is one of her bests, man i wish she would have sang the national anthem in the emotions or daydream era. this performance is legendary among the lambs but it was at the beginning of her career and very little know about this, imagine her singing the anthem with prime vocals in her popularity prime as well. i think i get why she stood away from the anthem though despite being queen of the 90s. she was already compared so much and pinned up against whitney all the time. and after whitney's iconic super bowl 91 performance of the anthem, mariah would've only been compared to that! honestly, mariah was always really good at staying in her own lane and making her own shit! she was able to reach acclaim and become legendary without stepping on other diva's shit. whitney made the anthem hers, so i get why mariah avoided it like the plague.
