She only has five Grammys despite writing, producing and singing in her own hit singles. Clearly the Grammys overlooked talent . This woman is an instrument. An angelic voice incarnate.

Such a difficult song to sing. It requires immense breath control, supreme vocal control, astonishingly accurate melismas and riffs, pinpoint octave leaps, stellar vocal dynamics, but most of all... it requires the singer to not only have excellent mixing technique, but to be able to sing in the middle of their voice, usually where it cracks. Phew! This is vocal suicide and why it deserves to be in the Top 5 Mariah Carey songs not to try at home!

This entire album was ahead of its time and it still sounds timeless. Hands down one of the most underrated albums of the 90s. Butterfly should have won a few Grammys.

It's 2024. I listen to this song with love. It brings out the best emotions in me.

I'm 28 years old now, when i was 7 years old whenever i came back from school it found the time our local UBC tv used to play this song and i fell in love with it, trust me as i got older i also wondered why a 7 year old me would love such a mature song😂😂 but upto date I'm on love with song. It's very special.

As a vocalist, I used to dissect every note of this song including falsetto vs chest voice and other dynamics like volume (forte and piano) and practice it all relentlessly. Mariah was one of my vocal coaches as a tween in the late 90s. ❤❤❤

I lost my then boyfriend though a car accident. I was 21 and he was 24 and our parents didn't know that we lived together as a couple for two years till the announcement of his death ( we lived in a rented apartment). I remember that day when they opened that drawer at the mortuary how I held u and still didn't believe that it was u. I remember how I used to go to that club everyday after work to drink and ask them to play this jam on repeat while crying and they complied cause they knew us and felt sorry for me. This jam somehow healed me it was like u were the one saying this words to me. I moved on after some time and the guy I met showed me flames for a good 10 yrs until we separated and also have a 12 yr old son with him. Baby why did u leave me like that? I know that I would have never gone through half of the things I went through after your passing ,had u still been here. I notice that nobody talks about her low note at 3:37. It is remarkable! That's a C3, which is low for a lot of men. But she also can reach a Bb7, which is high for a lot of women. Say what you will about Mariah, how does a single person have that much of a range and sound clear and profound at both ends of the range??? Unreal, her voice truly a gift of God. There will never be a second gift like that.

Mariah has an amazing voice for ballads. I prefer this style of her over the upbeat autotune pop version.

Honestly one of the most brilliant and expressive songs I’ve ever heard. Her voice is absolutely mesmerizing, sultry, husky, sensual but also powerful, you can feel that she’s truly yearning for her lost love.
