Mariana Mazzucato is one of the world's most exciting and original economists - author of previous books The Entrepreneurial State and The Value of Everything. She is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London, where she is Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose. She was named as one of the '3 most important thinkers about innovation' by the New Republic and one of the 25 leaders shaping the future of capitalism by Wired.
Rana Foroohar is global business columnist and associate editor for the Financial Times, and CNN’s global economic analyst. Her first book, Makers and Takers, was shortlisted for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year in 2016. Her second, Don’t Be Evil: the Case against Big Tech, was published in 2019 and was a Sunday Times Business Book of the Year.

Amazing women and fabulous content. I could listen to them in conversation forever(add Mark Blyth for my world changing dream team). If only we could get them into positions of power and not just behind the scenes influence. Progress is not happening fast enough.

The problem is that we have continued to have mercantilism by many developed countries and the US is only recently (Trump, maybe Biden) reacting with its own brand of mercantilism. So this begs the question: why is it okay for China (japan, germany, south korea to name just a few) to engage in this practice and not for the US to do so? The US would only be bringing some measure of balance to its overly financialized economy whereas these countries have been engaged in mercantilism at least since Bretton-Woods (immediately post WW2 period). Is this a double standard?
