Apparently, the director purposely slipped that pair of blue sneakers in @0:09. The music isn't appropriate for the time period either, but this was also done intentionally. They wanted to emphasize that Marie Antoinette was a teenage girl at this point.

I can't believe people actually used to dress like this 24/7. I mean I know it was only aristocrats and royalty that donned these outfits and not the common folk but still, wow!
@wanderingspark
@wanderingspark Жыл бұрын
Even aristocrats didn't dress like this 24/7. They had a style of dress called 'undress' that was like the 18th c. version of laying around the house in your sweatshirt. It included garments like wrapping gowns, banyans, and sultanas. These were still a lot fancier than a modern sweatshirt, but they were more casual and relaxed than what you see in this clip.

Well actually most french aristocrats didn’t Marie Antoinette dressed in the style of a British aristocrat
@ejm7637
@ejm7637 Жыл бұрын
They didn't.. In fact, it was a simple cotton dress worn by Marie Antoinette that helped solidify the aristocracies hatred of her. When Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun painted "La reine en gaulle" Marie Antoinette was scandalized by appearing in such a simple, immodest dress (it was comparable to being seen in her underwear). For the French nobility it was more evidence of how foreign, and rebellious, and licentious she was. This "cotton dress" eventually became popular throughout the continent, increasing demand for cotton, eventually leading to more slavery to the new world.

This movie is great! A cult classic, stylish, and a work of art by Sofia Coppola. I find it curious that there are so many sarcastic comments around here. I had heard that the film wasn't well-received in the United States, to be honest. Well, it received applause at Cannes, and as far as I know, it was very well-received here in Brazil. I particularly love this scene, Coppola's audacity to feature a Converse shoe there is fabulous (and the fact that all the candies were real).

This was a very underrated movie, and I wish more people understood that this was NOT a historical documentary or biopic. This move was made for a MODERN audience to humanize a very misunderstood woman, who history has treated unfairly and inaccurately. She was a scapegoat for a country that was long overdue for a revolution, but unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The financial mismanagement and decadence from the French monarchy before her, wasn't hers to shoulder alone, and the decadence and luxury while the poor starved was not entirely her problem, either. She came from the more laidback Austrian court, adapted to the high-maintenance French court, and never truly found her footing. The late HM Queen Elizabeth II was deemed to young to rule at 25, so Marie at 18 was in charge of France at the most vulnerable time in its history, an impossible task for any woman in any century. May the last Queen of France rest in honored glory.

So it seems like many people are confused why there are a pair of blue converses in one of th shots. According from what I’ve heard years ago. Apparently the Director wanted to show some creative symbolism that despite all the gowns and riches, it’s to remind us that Marie Antoinette was a teenager during this time. So that’s why there was a shot of the blue Converse shoes there. I’ve also heard of a theory that It is possible the film wants us to feel familiar with the modern aspects. Hence why in some moments, people act and talk like they are from more modern times. To give us a glimpse of the familiarity that the people had back then with their own era.

actually from an interview to Sofia Coppola: IGN: Why did Roman include a pair of Converse tennis shoes in the "I Want Candy" sequence? Coppola: Why was that? Yeah, he shot the whole "I Want Candy" montage and he just saw that there and put it in for me for fun. He just shot a bunch of stuff and left that in for fun because he thought I would like it, and then when I was editing we decided to leave it in.

If you were rich enough to afford to eat like that, you were also rich enough to have beautiful new clothes tailored specifically to fit your body measurements. Given at how proficient people back then were with a needle, I'd wager that even the poorer people wore generally better fitted clothes than we do today, as they would have been able to fit hand-me-downs to their bodies. Today it is the other way around and one expects their body to fit some random clothes bought of a rack.

While these shoes were definitely not in existence at the time of Marie-Antoinette, their inclusion in the film was intentional, to portray Marie-Antoinette as a typical teenage girl despite the time she lived in. Also, Kirsten Dunst worse those shoes (for comfort) the entire filming of the movie because they never showed her feet.

one of things I think people miss when they see this movie just because its lost on us today, owning this many gowns and shoes was extremely opulent. Most people even someone of means only had a couple of outfits their whole life and would generally learn skills or have a maid mend them constantly. Fabric and getting brand-new gowns was super, super (I cannot stress this enough) expensive. Most people would rework, pin up or down, or make something new-ish out of something they already had. What Marie had was the highest level of luxury she was able to have any dress and not to mention sugary sweets. Also a fantastic luxury. Today all these things are far more affordable to the common person. Yet even today, getting a custom dress or outfit would be a decent amount of money for anyone.

While parents were forced to watch their children die of malnutrition because they had no money to buy milk, Marie Antoinette was laughing, partying and shopping as if the treasury was endlessly bursting with gold. That is just unforgivable and disgusting.

@@Andrew-mi7bt it happened in real life. Marie Antoinette knew what was going on outside the gates of Versailles and chose to continue living lavishly using the tax money crystalized from the people's sweat, blood and tears. I have absolutely no mercy for that kind of behavior.

@@seren4740 I'm well aware that she never said "Let them eat cake" amd also performed some charity works. However, Marie Antoinette was told by her mother several times to read books and act like a queen, but her decision was to ignore the French people's suffering and live lavishly. By the time she decided to act like a queen, she was the wrong type of queen and boy did she go for it. Ignorance is never an excuse and our decisions determine the type of person we are. In Marie Antoinette's case, a failure of a queen and a tragic figure.

If I were queen of France in that time era I would first and foremost put my ppl first by having loads of fruit trees and have chicken and cows that can provide me with fresh eggs and milk so I can go out to my people and distribute baskets of food filled with bread milk eggs and fruite for every family who is experiencing hunger and thirst & poverty during those difficult time i would make it my personal mission to get up and close & personal with all my country people cause my country and ppl mean more to me than being frivolous about materialistic items! I would be France's Next Princess Diana 😊❤ Queen of Peoples ❤❤

That’s lovely💕 but is also easier said than done, especially on those times. Resources were short for harvesting, keeping food fresh, clean, and transporting, and there wasn’t any media. For their safety, royals weren’t allowed far out from the palace. This queen was born in royalty, always had everything, she could not even imagine what thirst cold or hunger was, that’s why so many royals seemed very neglecting, they just had no idea, they were raised in luxury, that’s all they knew. Fortunately now because of the media, we are aware of poverty, natural disaster, etc, and we can all find ways to help, even if we are not royals 😌🤍

@@BeautifulSyrenaIt's not so much because of that but because they couldn't do anything for the commission and the nobles who didn't want to pay their taxes, the monarchy depends on them and that's why they couldn't do anything but spend on luxuries.
