Unfortunately, the Bolshoi Theater has lost its position, but I think that changes are coming there soon.

It is a system.

There is no secret. The Vaganova School is the Russian classical ballet. Everything else is a circus or gymnastics.

It's a system applied to bodies that have been selected for specific criteria. Sometimes it leads to a mannered way of dancing, since, like all systems, it's not perfect.

I think they do certain exercises lying on the floor for good turnout, strength, flexibility. They don't just show them steps and throw them out in the middle of the floor with no technique or strength like most crappy ballet teachers do. They always have good technique so by the time they're in the middle of the floor they aren't floundering and picking up bad habits. There are some good utube videos on this but you have to look. What I've seen hasn't been in English so I just watch what they're doing.

MsSlucyna He does have a very forceful, loud voice, which I've read is common in Russian ballet teachers these days, though I don't know, personally. But he's very clear, and he and the dancers are so on the same page, very little time is taken for explanation or demonstration~like they all use the same shorthand, and power on through.

***** Thanks donnamila. I didn't get any kind of negative vibe from him. In fact, the opposite; I really enjoyed the way he and the company members worked together. I think it's a plus for a dance teacher to have a commanding kind of voice, however they use it. One of my favorite teachers years ago (he is till teaching, I think) was Finis Jhung. He had a relatively quiet way of speaking, but very clear. He was the first ballet teacher I ever saw (and I haven't seen many since) to use a microphone while teaching class, which was a great idea. He also had a platform built in one corner of his studio, so he could climb up there and see the students from above (he didn't spend the whole class there, but would go back and forth). He was (and probably still is) a very innovative teacher. I love great dance teachers!

+Hannah Trostle Uh no. Not age six. Pre ballet until around age 9 or 10. around age eleven is year one. Its an eight year curriculum. there are some independent teachers doing that, and successfully. But, usually the children and physically destroyed by their teens. Its a stupid idea. I've seen idiots do this in every method. There are hacks in ever country. BTW: this is not a strict Vaganova class. It is warm up class before rehearsal and performance

Yep. =) Mr. Petrov is usually use very booming and peppy voice. However his intonation does not sound like he is strict or angry. Just cheery and upbeat. It's funny how he always address the dancers "druzya moi" in a very loud rolling thunder voice manner (literally translates as "friends of mine") every routine he asks them to do. I heard on some ballet forums what dancers usually joke about Petrov: his wakeup/warmup class in the morning is better than coffee. So they secretly calling him "Mr. Coffee" behind his back. :)

Additionally, Petrov has been a personal trainer of Xander Parish for the last few years. I read interview where Xander is speaking greatly about Petrov. Quote (according my memory): he is just always "davai davai" (literal translation: common common"). Besides, people in UK can see how better Xander become. (well, may be "not better", because it's not fair to compare different schools and techniques, but Xander definitely became different in terms of his hand-head-torso coordination. Xander still has has good foot and step, but added some really good those famous "singing hands" of Vaganova. Not to the point what he can use it any time any day blindfolded in any choreography, but only in the choreography from Mariinsky repertoire. But I see Xander might be very very good pretty soon. 2 years or so, certainly with more exprience and more ballets under his belt. Mariinsky clearly gives him a decent stage time and almost always takes him on tour with them. And they tour a lot, and always go to all famous big theaters world wide. I almost suspect that Fateyev took him in as an experiment of his own, to see what happen if he introduce to western school ballet (great footwork) some Russian "singing hands" and perfecrionlistic fineese. Fateyev clearly stated he liked that Xander has very great work ethics. That might means he took Xander in to try to mold Royal Ballet student into universal dancer who "has feet and hands". You can see on this video Xander, it's easy to recognize him by his good jump technicue, hehe.

Seeing as there are photos and some videos of classes and they're all wearing leos, tights, and legwarmers, I'm going to assume they were allowed to wear what they wanted as well... And the Kirov most definitely was not second to the Bolshoi.

+klausious I think you might be misreading their body language. This is morning company ballet class. They’re on tour, they’re in unfamiliar surroundings, and they’re a few time zones away from their home, and their bodies aren’t at 100%. They probably did a show the night before, and here they are, at it again less than twelve hours later, at morning company class, with yet another show coming up in the evening. The ongoing exhaustion any company dancer feels day-to-day is unique to the ballet profession, and is unimaginable to any outsider. It’s a tough, gruelling, and short career. And every bone in your body hurts almost all of the time. I also have to tell you, that ballet dancers wouldn’t be doing what they do with such dedication if they didn’t love their art so much, if ballet wasn’t everything to them. Because it has to be, for them to succeed. Another thing, and this might be a cultural difference - we Americans smile a lot, a lot more often than Europeans. Europeans don’t tend to break into smiles all that readily. Russians even less so.

Then again, if you have been on the road (on tour), for months, flying all over the friggin world year after year, working to keep you technique together, you might not look so happy either. Likely, they are delighted to be dancing....but, like anyone in their position, they're just friggin' tired!

It's not like they are dancing or anything. It's just their warmup class to stay in shape. They doing it 350-355 times a year it's hard to get excited every day. It's just work, company usually just routinely rotate teachers and ask them to switch routines according to their strategy plan (if upcoming performances has a lot of jumping or such, teachers include more deep plies and other specific dance excersises, or if upcoming performances needs more endurance or elegance, teachers usually asked to develop or focus more on those aspects). Besides it's useful to switch and shuffle dance exercises from week to week, so dancers won't get used to the same day-to-day monotonous routine. As I said this particular class is nothing than just warmup, before this some dancers usually having some stretching and small wakeup excersises in other class, and after that goes to thus warmup class, and only after that they go ahead to their choreographers and teachers to learn new dance/choreography or to rehearse before performance on stage (usually 3-4 hours before the show).

Why, on the contrary I find this teaching style motivating, probably because I am used to it. I wouldn't want to take a silent class though, comments - both personal corrections and impersonally directed make me work harder.

Malonek Yeah corrections are great for every dancer, but he doesn't shut up any minute!! And his voice is annoying for me, looks like a market.

that is basically what I was talking about, I am used to this loud teaching style and it fits me well, it's all about the personal preferences... I am used to teachers being constantly like "we hooooold the leg hiiiigh" "push the leg fast" "and ooone and two" "try to survive and turnout more" only it is in my language. class without this would seem dull to me actually

It seems to be the Russian style. For the best looking dancers, gentler instructors and bloody sight better pianists than this tedious bore at the keyboard, look at the Royal Ballet classes - particularly the 2018 World Ballet Day company class.

The Royal Ballet can’t hold a candle to the amount of outstanding artists the Russian companies produce and that is an inescapable fact
