i was diagnosed with bipolar I a couple years ago. At 55, I have never found anything that works for me better than getting a little high. With depakote alone, I just got very depressed. I had other medications, for the depression, while taking depakote and there was nothing that helped for very long. Getting just a little bit high makes suicide thoughts vanish and helps me to sleep. After a while, I stopped taking the depakote. That was when I started feeling normal again.

Marijuana sleep isn't deep enough for the good affects on your body & mind. And it will become a sleep 'crutch'. I'm not against it, but lets deal with this great drug in a realistic manner. It has a number of benefits, but it is not without some downside. The same with most things in life. (lol) Most sleeping problems can be attributed to 'thinking' and inability to turn thinking off. Check out meditation, it can help with this problem. Good luck!

Because when your body forces your mind to change from one emotion to another it is mentally exhausting as it is. now add insomnia to that which is going to further exhaust you. Its not something that is just made up for people enjoyment, but i will agree with you that pills are not the answer.

You can find just as much literature about marijuana being good for mental illness as you can for it triggering it. Also people need to know that just because you smoke weed doesn't mean you will get a disorder of some kind only people who have pre-existing or predisposing conditions are more likely to have this affect.

I've had VERY bad bipolar disorder in the past. Luckily i've reduced it down to a minor headache...everyday after work. Smoking marijuana makes it MUCH worse. My brain won't stop thinking. In fact, my brain will start switching thoughts and hitting every sector of the brain until i'm out of ideas....and it freaking sucks. If your bipolar, avoid weed.

Once people understand the difference between CBD's and THC, then they can truly help themselves. If you're going to take a medication that is known to work, understand everything about it so you know which strain to take. Lots of you took the wrong strain and that's why you had anxiety. Learn the difference and get the right medication.

The SHOULD have been explained better to the viewer. The bad videography and disorganized expaination lead to a likely misunderstanding of a seemingly revolutionary idea. If you have bipolar disorder your brain works differently. While level of function may not be impaired the mechanism differs from the current norm. The difference shows serious corrolation to the difference between the current norm and that of marijuana smokers. The same part of the brain is used instead of what is common.

Wow, if it works for you, then I guess stick with that, I have bi-polar II and have the opposite reaction to it. I mean, sometimes it calms me down, but mostly it just makes me paranoid and anxiety-ridden. I agree that the pharmacological companies take too much of our money, but I think there are professionals who do care and are trying to come up with other ways for us to self-soothe without using so much chemistry. Meditation is a pretty safe thing you can do. No risks with it either.

Each person is uniquely affected by each psychiatric medication. One medication might prove to be the wonder drug for one person and merely result in a jumble of intolerable side effects in another. All you have to do is read the possible side effect list for almost any of those meds. Typical lists will include: diarrhea; constipation; insomnia; somnolence; anorexia; increased appetite, etc. The same is going to be true of the effect pot has on each person. It might help some and make others worse.

Are the neurological scans of the patients with or without psychiatric drugs? If they are with psychiatric drugs, well than this similarity is fairly explainable. Personally, i would like to see the same demonstration done on a control subject, one taking psychiatric drugs, one not taking psychiatric drugs, as well as one only using marijuana.

I used to smoke a buncha weed everyday for 2.5 years. And y'know my bro smoked even more than me for 4+ years and still going. And I noticed I wouldn't get high after a while, but rather it would become a "dysphoric high." And later I got diagnosed bipolar, but he didn't. So I'm just different. Everyone's different. And rather than just blaming weed (however I would say it is a factor), I blame my old shitty friends for it. They were assholes and always giving me shit.

To this end, it raises 2 serious question. 1: Does this have something to do with the correlation between the onset of bipolar symptoms and marijuana use in some? And, 2: Does this explain why some bipolar sufferers display higher levels of function when they have used marijuana regularly over time?

An alcoholic knows alcohol doesn't solve their problems-- every one of them is suffering. You can't compare the effects of alcohol to the effects of pot. People can function and lead fulfilling lives while stoned-- an alcoholic is disoriented and out of control. Pharmaceuticals are drugs, there is no way around that, so the point is to decrease negative effects as much as possible while treating the symptoms. Cannabis is a viable medication.

Cannabis use is renowned for increasing the level of all psychiatric disorders I have worked in a institution in the area of mental health. it is now policy that you are refused a second admission if you use cannabis regardless of how unwell you are. The effects are well known in country’s where it is cheap. Example India. not everyone responds this way too it but the vast majority with mental health issues do..

Use it sparingly and only as needed, as overdoses of any antipsychotic can create the opposite effect. (actually inducing psychosis, paranoid delusion, hallucination and illusion) Keep your tolerance low so it works when you need it. The brainscan similarity noted by the video between bipolars and chronic pot smokers is because both are on antipsychotics, one man-made and one natural. (cannabidiol)

I smoked pot for 40 yrs. and during the last 10 years I would occasionally have panic attacks. I still believe pot should be legal and there are therapeutic uses for it, but I also feel that over use can have adverse affects on some users. If you over use any substance you ingest it can harm you whether it's food, alcohol, marijuana,or prescription drugs. Whatever you use try to treat it as a sacrament.

I have bipolar disease amongst a whole host of other mental ailments. I’m 53, have been baked daily for 30 years now, weed, and for the last few years big, fat dabs, up to 3 or 4 in a row. Recently, on Feb 24th, I quit all cannabis products entirely. It’s been a full week and I feel like a new man. I’m no dr, I don’t even have a high school diploma but I know that something has changed and in a positive fashion. Yeah I know most of you who may read this will say, a week is chicken shit and I agree but I tell ya I’ve had it, no more calculating how much fuel I will need for my torch, there will be no more figuring out how much shatter I need to bring for my adventurous weekends, I won’t have to carry around glass rigs anymore. And lastly on this topic, I won’t set off anymore hotel alarms nor will I almost burn my face and hair off with my fuel and torch; a quick story on that, I was in a hotel room a few months ago and I was trying to put fuel in my torch and it wasn’t working properly, but I tried it anyway, well the fuel kinda didn’t go in properly, so when I turned it on, it caught on fire and nearly burnt my hair off. Scared the crap outta me, but I was hooked for real, clearly addicted to Cannabis in all its forms. Did that stop me, nope, went to the nearest glass shop and bought a new torch and slammed back 3 dabs that night. When I think about mental illness, specifically bipolar; we have enuf stimulation going on, no need for cannabis. That’s my opinion, again I’m the furthest thing from an expert on cannabis or any other medical issue, however I am an expert on bipolar disease, in my own head I suppose. Lol. But, honestly it sucks to be addicted to anything, it just does, caffeine, try quitting that one. I said to myself, on the 24th, no more stimulants, no more shatter, no more alcohol, no more caffeine, what a pile of b.s. that was, yes I quit shatter, yes I pretty much never really drink alcohol and that’s no problem, but coffee, not happening, not yet anyway. Talk about foolish, like I was going to quit cannabis and caffeine all at once. Sorry, no, I drink two cups of coffee per day and don’t see me quitting anytime soon. Alcohol is undoubtably terrible for bipolar people, and it’s straight up poison to the system, bipolar or normal. Plus it is a negative cheerleader for manic behaviour. That’s all I have for now. Much love to all.

@nikmarkwell It's not so much to avoid weed as it is to avoid doing things that make your life harder. A friend and I both have schizoaffective. Pot is great for me, but it weirds him out. Antidepressants are well known to make life harder for bipolars, too. That's why there's lithium and lamictal. Rather than avoiding something, try if you life and if it works, great. Otherwise, figure something else out

It is actually VERY common to have bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder, and also another disorder simultaneously; much more common than someone with a less severe disorder. It's called comorbidity. So, it is possible for someone to have bipolar I or II and schizoaffective disorder. And yes, bipolar is very commonly misdiagnosed. Fabio isn't trolling, he's just ill-informed or perhaps misdiagnosed, as you implied.

I wish people would speak for themselves. If MJ doesn't help you then don't use it. I am 50 and have bipolar disorder. MJ is an absolute wonder to me. It calms my manic phase and it also raises me out of my depression.....quickly I might add. The pharmaceuticals do not work for me and cause nausea, headaches, and insomnia. I average 3 puffs per day depending on the strength of the MJ. It may not be for everyone who is bipolar, but is a miracle drug for me.

@nikmarkwell What's wrong with thinking? lol Blowing my mind has only ever made me a better person, If you are smoking to much, then smoke less, and that is that.

This is very insulting and I can honestly say the majority (pretty much everyone) who suffers form bipolar would appreciate you keep comments like this to yourself. Comments like this are very hurtful. You aren't helping, your making things worse. If you don't want to change your views on mental illness then just shut the fuck up. Don't talk about what you don't know.
