Yabushige is dooming himself by not sticking to one faction and seeing things through. The shilly-shallying just proves to both sides that he is unreliable and will turn at a moments notice hence dangerous even if whatever faction he supports at the moment wins. If he had just openly and loyally stuck to one side whether it be Toranaga or Ishido, even on the losing side - he is a major lord of a large fief with a not inconsiderate leverage to negotiate his way out of the consequences of a losing side. Here, he is just a dangerous and unreliable turncoat.

He doesn't have that luxury, 'openly and loyaly' sticking to one side, especially ishido who was more likely to come up on top. Stuck between a rock and a hard place

@@IndoAryanKang That's the problem with siding with Toranaga who was in such a weak position that he was sacrificing all his pawns right and left. He even sacrificed Hiromatsu, a powerful piece who was loyal all the way to the end. Ultimately, Toranaga sacrificed his Queen (Mariko) for a gambit that would eventually win a checkmate. This is why Yabushige's final words to Toranaga is very meaningful to the effect and paraphrasing, "all of the people you used and sacrificed to make yourself Shogun...." Yabushige was stuck between a rock and a hard place, but he also didn't play his hand well.
