I know that Anna has been getting a lot of praise for her performance, but Cosmo was just as good in this episode. He deserves more appreciation.

I wish they’d not gone with his silly contact lenses, I find them so distracting in serious scenes such as this. All for the one reference to him having blue eyes in the first episode 🙄

Cosmo has been amazing as Blackthorne the entire series. While they're both obviously based on the novel, it is a bit of a different Blackthorne than the 1980s version (starring Richard Chamberlain as Blackthorne), but I would simply refuse to choose which one is better. Both are great.

People who hate any of these characters because of this scene I think miss the point. Both are right in their own eay, Mariko's only way is this one where her life becomes the catalyst for Torunaga's victory whilst John's appeal to her is reasonable as a friend and or as a lover

in the book, she explains her decision in a letter to him. If she didn't sacrifice herself, Toranaga would lose and they would both die.

I think it's admirable, honestly. As someone above said, if she hadn't, they would have died anyway. She was willing to sacrifice herself so that the whole lot of people who were sworn to Toranaga weren't caught in a crossfire - one that would potentially take their lives. She was willing to be loyal to the end to her liege lord. One woman changed the course of everything. As much as I hated to see what happened to her, her decisions don't make me love her character any less.

THIS EPISODE 9 IS STUPID!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE AND THE WRITERS DID NOT RESEARCH!! FLAWS: 1) Mariko was tasked to A) rescue Toranaga's Wife, Consort and New Son, and escort them from the castle. B) if refused to leave, that proves all the "royals" are prisoners. Her "Suicide" was to Embarrass Ishido and the Court. 2) Since Ishido relented to release Mariko and the others, HER DUTY WAS TO GET THEM TO Toranaga, letting herself be killed was BREAKING THE PLEDGE to Toranaga!! MAKE NO SENSE, ESPECIALLY since she just found Love with Blackthorne!! 3) THERE IS NO HISTORY OF WOMEN OF ROYALITY COMMITING SEPPUKU! Mariko was a "Lady", ie Royalty, and NOT A SAMURAI! QUOTE: The custom known as "seppuku," which specifically refers to ritual suicide by disembowelment, was reserved for men of the samurai class in feudal Japan. Samurai women had different methods, which traditionally involved either slashing their own throat or stabbing themselves in the heart.Apr 16, 2024" AGAIN, MARIKO WAS NOT A SAMURAI, She Was Royality, "Lady"!!! The Character that Markio is BASED ON, NEVER HAD CONTACT WITH BLACKTHORNE, DID NOT COMMIT SUICIDE OF ANY KIND, was actually killed by her servant as she about to be captured.!! PS, the ACTUAL "Translator" that Toranaga assigned in the REAL story was a JAPANESE MAN, NOT A WOMAN!! The Writing in the Hulu Fantasy Shogun is Bullshit and Full or Flaws and Historical Inaccuracies! Blackthorne's REAL Character "Adams" Actually MARRIED his Japanese Consort assigned by Toranaga and they had two children.
