Tour the apartments from The Mary Tyler Moore Show - both Mary's and Rhoda's. Mary's apartment is in a classic Queen Anne Victorian house is an example of great set design. You'll see the apartments as if they were real homes, with ceilings and all 4 walls. Along the way we'll learn the principles of great design that you can apply to your own home.
We'll go behind the scenes of this classic 70s TV show set in Minneapolis starring Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards and Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern, Cloris Leachman as Phyllis Linstrom, Ed Asner as Lou Grant, Gavin MacLeod as Murray Slaughter, Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens and Ted Knight as Ted Baxter. I'll also point out some of the bloopers from The Mary Tyler Moore Show set design.

thank you for this! When the first season came on the air, I loved the yellow wicker chair, so my mom suggested I write to the set decorator. He was kind enough to answer my letter and told me where they purchased it. Lucky for me (and my dad's convertable car!) we went to the Los Angeles store Rappaport, and the salesman told me yes, there were two chairs originally, the designer bought one, and I got the other! Many years later, I gave it to my niece, with the strict instructions "mary's chair" is to stay in the family!

Love what you did with this! So true that design is personal and tells a story. The Victorian vibe crossing over with the 70s is sort of Bohemian but tells the story perfectly! Great point about scale being slightly larger. Too bad not so as often in real life. You made Mary’s apartment even more beautiful! Thanks!!

Excellent video! Enjoyed it! I saw Mary Tyler Moore once, in person. It was many years ago, I think around 1979. I was walking by the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. And there was Mary! She was walking a little dog 🐕 on a leash outside the hotel. She was shorter in person than I imagined. I SO wanted to say hello and ask for her autograph, but I couldn't get up the nerve and I really didn't want to bother her. We all miss Mary, so much!

Mary's apartment didn't exactly whisper the 70's, itself! 😂 With the sunken living room and plush (almost shag) carpeting of mustard yellow and brown. And the olive walls. (I think the simulation modernized it a little bit by removing the carpeting and replacing it with what looks like hardwood or hard vynle flooring?) In any case, Mary's apartment was chic- but definitely 70's chic. Come to think of it, I think Rhoda's apartment screamed the 60's! With all the day glow colors. I know a lot of people still decorated with day-glow colors in the 70's (Especially hot pink and shocking orange)... but I think that was a holdover from the 60's. Rhoda's aesthetic didn't fully join the neutral tones of the 70's until she got married, moved to New York, and got her own show. I'm really geeking out on this! 🤓😂 I just love that whole era of my early childhood and this subject makes me happy! ❤

I always loved the step down into Mary's apartment as well as the built-in bookshelf. It is interesting how the set was changed over the seasons, but I never noticed. I wonder if the little wooden steps were an afterthought as the first season progressed giving the actors more options for movement? The progression from no steps to one that is permanently built in is a natural one. This is such a familiar space, having grown up watching MTM every Saturday night. It felt like visiting the home of a childhood friend. Thanks for taking me on the tour.

This is fantastic! My mom loved the Mary Tyler Moore show and, since we had only one TV when I was growing up, we watched what our parents watched. I have been an interior designer for the past 35 years and, more than any other visual experience I had as a kid, Mary's apartment without a doubt birthed my own interest in interior design. I hadn't seen the set in years but remembered everything about it - from the stained glass "garage door" at the kitchen breakfast bar to the bookcase "step" to the M on the wall. Thank you so much for doing this! (As a side note, I even remembered thinking that the plaster weeping between the lath in Rhoda's apartment meant there was no insulation - a really bad idea considering Minneapolis winters :-).

It kinda like they're from an alternate universe that has a different set of physical laws than ours universe. This is probably why I love your channel so much.

One of my favorite examples of attention to detail is the addition of the skyscraper IDS Tower that shows up in the window. The building was not built until 1972. In the first couple of seasons, you can see the tallest building in the city until, the IDS Center was completed, called the Foshay Tower. Who would have guessed that set designers would care about a tiny detail like that!

LOVE! This tour was so fantastic. Without a doubt, Mary's apartment is my absolute favorite of all TV settings. You did a wonderful job touring it. I took a woodworking class in high school and yes, I made an M. It's my initial and as a little girl I always watched the show and loved that M on her wall. I never spotted the R though. Did you notice in the scene of Lou taking too much of the dinner there was a guy sitting behind the dining table at the little table by the window? That actor is Henry Winkler before he became famous as the Fonz.
@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane
@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane 2 жыл бұрын
So, you had an M too? But, you even made yours. Cool. Yes, I thought about pointing out "The Fonz." I just watched an interview with him about doing that episode. It's kind of sad and funny, because it lines up with what happened to him in that episode. He was new there, obviously, and everyone else knew each other. So, when they broke for lunch, he said the whole cast went off to wherever they go and he didn't have a clue where to get any lunch. He said that after that, when guest actors were on any show he was a part of, that he made sure that they knew where they could get some lunch.

I loved The Mary Tyler Moore Show when I was a kid. She was a huge inspiration to me. She was a working woman whose life never revolved around a man, her focus was her job and her relationships with her female friends, and I loved that. I always loved her apartment, and was very disappointed when Mary moved into the second apartment. To this day, I have a little wooden "etc." that is displayed on a shelf in my living room. That's my homage to the show, and reminds me to embrace my inner Mary and Rhoda.

I cherish my autographed photo of her. I also had the privilege of meeting Gavin MacLeod. His daughter was a school teacher in Monterey, CA. I worked at See's Candies in Monterey for 8 years before moving to Los Angeles in 2006. Whenever Gavin was in town, he would come into the shop where I worked. He, too, was a very friendly person. So were his wife and daughter, very down to earth people. Thank you for this clip. May the entire Mary Tyler Moore Show cast all rest in peace.

Hi! I'm so happy your channel was in my "recommendation"...I love it! Watching Rhoda as a young girl inspired me to become a window dresser. As a little girl, my parents would take us kids to see the Christmas display windows in our city's downtown. Back then, there were no malls...but every city had fabulous old department stores with huge windows. The windows displayed everything from fashion to animated Santa Claus, his elves, & a steamer model train. When I saw those amazing displays, I wondered who designed all the detail & beauty? All I knew was that someday I would do that too. So when I saw the character "Rhoda" and heard the job-title "window-dresser"...From that day on, I called myself a window-dresser! Lol! After high school, (college was never an option for me)...I just needed to get myself to a department store & do my thing! And that's exactly what I did! I had no training. I had no experience...Not even a portfolio of pictures. What I had was confidence in my ability to do the work...I just knew it! In the beginning of my career, I sometimes would work for free...Just to get my foot in the door. Once I showed my skill, and my window displays = foot traffic & profit for the stores...Well my reputation was one of " Oh Dee Dee, she's the best!...Hire her immediately!" Eventually, I traveled all over the country designing displays for: department & specialty stores...and later, even airport shops. I even became a "visual display trainer"...(Training on the corporate level) So you see, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is near & dear to my heart. I loved both their apartments...But to this day my home is sooooo inspired but Rhoda's bright, fun & whimsical space...(with just a bit more square footage. Lol!) Sorry for the long comment...but I loved my work for 40+ years...it was a fabulous ride! Thank you so much for posting these 2 apartment who has inspired so many of us gals to dream (&) actually live our dreams. Peace friend. ❤💃 (BTW, As of tonight, I'm a new subscriber to your amazing channel🙂❤)

I'm a guy and I watch the show every Saturday. For me, it was an event. Mary was definitely a role model for many, including me. While I didn't want to be her (I'm a guy) she did make me want to be a better person. Our lives sort of paralleled each other. I had just moved out on my own and rented my first apartment. Her best friend lived in her building. My best friend lived in my building I didn't have many funds, so I had to decorate my apartment on a shoestring budget. I went with style over expensive. All of my friends just loved my apartment and what I did with it, just like Marys'. In fact, my best friend dropped in unannounced and he brought along his sister. It was the first time she had seen my apartment. She asked me if I had hired a professional decorator! Anyway, Mary and the show did have a positive influence on my life and it did make (with some effort) make me a better person.

But then one day we had a visit from one of our friends from school, and when he asked if he could use the phone we told him how to get to the pay phones in front of the party store down on PCH. I always wondered about the establishing shot showing Mary's apartment on the 3rd floor but Rhoda always goes up to hers. Was there 4 floors from the back? Not as bad a Full House having Uncle Jesse( who's last name changes from Cockran to Kotsopolis after season 1). He moves to an attic that never existed( per establishing shot) after marriage. If the extra floor was there. Joey & Jesse wouldn't have initially needed to live in the stair alcove ,& basement, respectively. MTM show was 1970 to 1977. I was 13 thru 20 at 1977. Before Mary, there was That Girl (1966 -1971) Marlo Thomas. A daring concept of women's liberation. Unfortunately not too many could get up and go. Due to strict upbringing especially in spanish family. I'm Puerto Rican. I was the only sibling of 4 , to follow tradition. From parent's house to husband's house. 22 years later, I got my first apartment (studio) at 42 years old. And yes I felt like Ann Marie (That Girl) and Mary Richard. It was wonderful. I love this. This show inspired me so much as a teen. I use to watch this show as a rerun as a teen in the 90s. I was def inspired. I think subconsciously I became a little bit Rhoda and a little bit Mary as an adult. I had a very unique apartment in my early to mid 30s that I called my Mary Tyler Moore apartment. It had a loft and I painted one wall bright orange. This was a joy to see! One of my favorite episodes was when Rhoda redecorated Lou’s apt. To this day I think it was amazing design. It was very modern but also retro. I’m the episode Lou hated it which was of course hilarious.

I love this. You talking about how inspired by Mary and her lifestyle and also Rhoda, it was so evocative. It seems there were many watching this growing up and enjoying it. Then there are those that it had a more profound and deeper imprint on them. I love your work because I connect and go back and remember a side of me that was taking shape in my own personal spirit. I then have aha moments, knowing these details you bring to life are visceral and I'm amazed at how that energy still comes through with how I live at 60, what's come before and now. I just made the connection right now to the fact I write and own the local paper (very small and independent) but it wasn't a career path I chose, it was a dream come to life late and it's not perfect but it's ticking off the life list and showing me the shades of influence from tv shows and the like. Just a box in the corner of a lounge to be entertained? Yep, and also this little portal too it seems. Love it.

This was fantastic! I always loved that step down with the bookcase built in and the stained-glass drop-down window in Mary's apartment. When I was really young, I wanted her place for when I was older and single and then the Walton's for when I was married with a family......and then we could vacation in a rustic house like on Little House on the Prairie. That was my dream.

This just showed up as a suggestion for me to watch and I am so glad it did! What a fun walk through Mary and Rhoda's apartments :) I too watched the shows and borrowed style from both when I was out and on my own. I used to play You're going to make it after all in my head when I first moved out ... thank you for the wonderful video! Two wonderful ladies who brought so much of themselves to the roles.

Another great tour! I remember these apartments so well. I also remember Rhoda was the reason I ever heard of window dressers. I would later go on to be a visual merchandiser for almost two decades and design quite a few windows along the way. All that color and props in Rhoda’s apartment absolutely enthralled me!

Good job, Marina. This brings back so many memories. I'm an architecture nut and I remember as a kid it used to drive me bananas that there was obviously not room for many of the rooms and things in TV homes and apartments. Thank you for pointing out when something is not physically possible. But, it's TV and we enjoy it anyway, I appreciate your doing this hard work so we can see what we thought about a lot and bringing these great old shows back to us in 3-D.
