Maybe it is too late to make a comment, but I do it anyway. A small leisure craft might not be visible by the radar on a big commercial cargoship if there are some rough seas. With an AIS transmitting the position, name, speed and course you will be visible on the on the screens on the big ships. It is also important to have the antenna as high as possible because the range from the AIS will increase.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass

In this area, radar is not important as we do not go out on days with poor visibility. Also, as you point out, small boats do not always show up on radar. That leaves large commercial traffic and they always have their AIS on and we can see them coming and know who will get close to us and that is very useful information for us - and the AIS system generates all the answers for us automatically so it is simple to use.

Your comment brought back a situation I dealt with many years ago in the early 70s. I was helping a friend who was a captain on a large cargo ship move his 35-foot sailboat from Baltimore Maryland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We had to transit the C&D Canal between the Chesapeake and the Delaware River which is very narrow and heavily used by commercial vessels. As luck would have it the fog was as thick as soup. We had no radar and AIS wasn't in use. We continually broadcasted our position on the radio and listened while all the commercial ships made each other aware of our location. Finally, we broke a major rule and tied up to a bridge until the fog cleared. Had we radar and AIS we would have had a safer transit. Now, these many years later every boat I've owned is equipped with both.

Major rule or not, it sounds like it was a wise move. If we have to move around in fog we try and keep to areas of shallower depth to avoid larger boats and ships. Of course, such areas tend to have crab and lobster pots.... 😲

Thank you Ladies for a very informative and well put together video. A few points on this subject, AIS and radar are different as you and your contributors have highlighted and should not be pitted against each other. There should not be "AIS vs Radar" as they do very different things. I recently removed my radar as in over 5 years of ownership I have never used it, I would need to read and understand the whole of the manual again to understand the radar operation. I had the mast taken down, a radar reflector mounted high on the mast and a Vesper AIS transponder fitted which I'm well pleased with, the radar removed. I no longer have a fear of halyard wrap around the radar. Thanks for posting, this is probably the best you tube channel giving a broad reflection on the comparison between AIS and Radar.

Thank you for the feedback and kind words 👍 We do agree that the two technologies work in different areas rather than competing. From our own experience we would say that high-accuracy GPS and a good chartplotter is the competitor to radar in reduced visibility where land is hard to see (obviously does nothing for detecting other boats and obstacles). For the moment we feel no need to install radar, but we use our AIS every day when sailing.

Lots of boats do crazy stuff. We heard a MayDay during one night passage where the skipper had no idea where he was. He had no GPS, no chartplotter, no flares and no app on a mobile that could give a position. He just followed his compass until he ran aground. Listening to the coastguard talking to him was eye-opening... :-O

Bit late coming to the party but can’t help but interject 😅 if you can only afford one it must be AIS! Both these devices have only one thing in common and that is it’s there to increase safety at sea and for the vast majority of sailors/boaters cost is a major factor. AIS can be had for as little £150, if you want a half decent radar stick a nought on the end of it😂 imho radar on small recreation craft does little to enhance sea safety and unless you understand the ins/outs of operating the system can even get you into trouble! Stay safe out there 👍

We use our AIS all the time, but we have never felt the lack of radar to be an issue. The price does not help - we have lots of other items we prefer to spend that money on.

Excellent and informative episode. Great breakdown of the installation from Owen and I'm glad Impavidus showed the chart overlay because I didn't and should have. Also appreciate that you followed the clips up with your own thoughts and further info. I forgot to mention (although I think we covered it in our clip) that we were monitored by the British Navy on AIS throughout our entire trip through the Suez, down the Red Sea and into the Gulf of Aden... and we had no idea. Kinda like a reverse AIS ghost! Cheers ✌️⛵

Thanks for the feedback and, if it was a good episode, then you must take share of that. Thank you for taking part. Doing this has triggered discussions aboard about whether or not we should have radar at some point and our current feeling is that when we go to areas with more small or more leisure traffic (and less commercial traffic) then that may be the time to do it. Thanks again - Bev & Gaynor

Jamie, does your RADAR use much power? Can it be run 24 hrs without depleting your batteries too much? Can any units be set to "wake up" after a set amount of time, look around, and then "sleep" in order to save battery?

Many thanks, very helpful. I'll be checking out Jamie's vlog on "Follow The Boat". I relied on radar on my boat until doing a yacht delivery, sailing down the Irish Sea at night on a yacht that had an AIS transponder. Knowing that we could be seen as well as being able to see the other traffic made watch keeping a little easier! I've now installed AIS on mine.

AIS was the least work for the most result for us given the waters we sail in. If we go abroad we shall probably look at radar as well. Thanks for commenting.

Sailing Yacht Salty Lass I would recommend doing a course on how to “read” radar as it can be quite confusing at first. The RYA run (one day) courses, though I don’t know if they can be done on-line at the moment.

Thanks, very informative. For me AIS first definitely. My main worry is a collision whilst resting or in bad visibility. Curious to hear that you can broadcast your position through an App. Don’t you have to register etc?
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass Жыл бұрын
I do not know how the app works, but two friends use it so I know it is possible. Also I think it only works when you are near land and you only show up on MarineTraffic and not on AIS systems out at sea. Marine AIS uses the VHF radio to "speak" to other boats. Our AIS broadcasts our position to any boat within about 15 to 20 nm and that is loads of time, typically about an hour.

Really good video and channel. A couple of thoughts: AIS is only as good as the quality of information being transmitted by other vessels. It is quite common to see a disparity between a radar target and an AIS target. AIS should also never be used for collision avoidance, particularly CPAs/TCPAs derived from AIS. AIS data can also be wrong. I worked on a ship whose AIS name reverted back to the ships older name. It took us two days to become aware of this. (A secondary system overrode a primary system). Also VHF communication should not be used in standard collision avoidance, the rules work for every situation.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and the insights to the limitations of AIS. We use it as a source of information, but never as the DEFINITIVE source of information. For us the Mk.1 eyeball is the top instrument for most situations. As for VHF, I have found that even large ships make decisions that go against the apparent rules - I say "apparent" because sometimes they are in possession of information we lack. Just the other day, a cargo vessel instructed us to pass green-to-green rather than the expected red-to-red. They were a much bigger vessel than us, made of steel and going faster. I decided not to argue the point ... 😉 Thanks for your kind words about the vid & channel. It is appreciated 👍

@SailingYachtSaltyLass

We did not concern ourselves with that. AIS transmits at 2W power every 30 seconds and uses 130mA average current. The latest broadband radar are about 20W and go on a 5A breaker

The biggest downside of RADAR, as I've heard and read, is power consumption. Is that an out-of-date myth? Do most modern RADAR work with standard battery/solar systems without depleting the batteries overnight? Thanks for the very informative video!
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 4 жыл бұрын
Great point! I have no idea what the answer is to that. I would be surprised if the modern ones used more power than the older ones. The electronics are so much more efficient these days.

Another good thing about AIS is that as well as the other ship's name you get distance and bearing too. So shouting at them and adding ".. we are the sailboat 1.6nm off your port bow bearing xxx° ... " helps a lot.
