Indie fanboys sometimes do. But at the same time some "regular" gamers tend to label anyone who explain why he think the indie market is really way better than the AAA one as a fanboy or "one of those artsy devellopers". Saying that AAA games tend to be shit nowadays, while there are many masterpiece coming from indie devellopers, therefore indie is better, is one thing. Saying indie games are better because they are indie is something else. Also I would say that a good 15$ game made by 4 people is better than a equally good 60$ game made by 200 people.

MrPodaky Because they are much smaller games. Modern published games take gygabytes of data, while Cave Story doesn't even reach 1 mb. You need all those people to make a good looking dog! Additionally, it may have something to do with the modern mainstream tendency of focusing on trying to make a game impressive instead of fun. A game full of badass cutscenes may be impressive, but not fun. Indies also tends to keep gameplay simple, thus being more difficult to screw up. There's also a personal taste variable: Indies have a lot of 2d platformers and puzzles (genres a bit neglected by mainstreams), so fans of those genres will like them better. Don't jump into the indie worship bandwagon for that though. Keep in mind that for every Cave Story, there are 99 more obscure half-assed rip offs with Atari era gameplay worse than any COD. When hipsters worship indies and bash the mainstream, they conveniently forget those or (ironically) only played the "mainstream" indies. Then there's the issue of people judging indies' gameplay with lower standards leading to overrating. That is, being more forgiving to their flaws because they kinda "have an excuse" for having them, while mercylessly nitpicking mainstreams. Also, falling in love with features that they would take for granted in non indies. I personally, as a self respecting customer, only care about product quality. If it's flawed, it's flawed. I'm not gonna ignore or downplay the flaw just because the developer was broke. Conversely, when it does something right, I'm not gonna be amazed if every other game does it just as well, wheter they are mainstream or not.

Evil Ryu that the thing though im not bashing the entire mainstream market. Nor the indie market im just saying that cave story is a really good fucking game. Better then cod in my honest opnion. Cod's story mode is one of the biggest jokes in gaming i ever seen. The multiplayer i guess can be fun for other but i really was more frustrated with the community and grinding in order to get the fun stuff. Cave story there was no frustration. Honestly indie games are okay in my book and i'm a little disappointed and bored with mainstream games. Right now when you look at mainstream titles what you'll find is alot of shooters and cod clones. With indies there's a lot more variety. You'll have to sacrifice that variety for lower quality in graphics,sound,story,etc.

MrPodaky There are millions if indie games. Just because the sheer amount at least a few have to be good. I coded a crappy game for a school project in Basic in a single afternoon. That already qualifies as an indie game. It was not good by any definition of the word, but it was enough to get me a good grade.

I didn't play a single Pokemon game, didn't even complete first halflife, played maybe 3 Mario games, completed none, etc. That's just as legit gaming as anything else. There's tens of thousands of titles out there, yet only a few "mainstream" ones are really respected among gaming. So yes, I am kinda hipster with my gaming at times, and guess what, glad I am. I don't buy into the hype, or follow the stream. I play whatever I wanna play, as everybody should. Gaming is too everchanging to have a static culture, due to the interactive element. Whem it comes to indie developers though, I just think they're usually BETTER. Their games are not as large, but way more polished. If I were to compare the voice acting from "Dust: An elysian tail" with, say, the voice acting from FFXIII or CoD 4, then the latter two sounds apathic in comparision. The same can be said for a lot of key elements when it comes to gaming. It's not about how huge or creative your game is. It's about how well you do with what you got.

Luxai Indie games are not polished, they are usually the opposite; buggy and unbalanced. But when the game does something that makes it stick out, gamers can forgive them for that. I have a whole closet full of games you never heared of. 80% of them are crap, 18 % are playable, but the rest is really awesome.

In my opinion FEZ is really different from Paper Mario. On the other hand, SUPER Paper Mario is more similar. The RPG side has been simplified and the game is platform oriented so it's easier to compare it to FEZ. I loved the two firsts Paper Mario games, so Super Paper Mario felt a bit weird to me. And I don't know if Paper Mario sticker stars is any good. :S

Mighty Bear He only mentioned Super Paper Mario and not the first two. Honestly, all three of them are among my favorite games ever. ...And don't even bother playing Sticker Star. I guarantee you will be absolutely disappointed.
