My mother's cousin. My grandfather and Mario's father were brother. His mother is Rita Lanza; my mom was also named Rita Lanza. My name is Rita. I went to my cousin's funeral as a little girl who understand the lost of a loved one. I am, at the age of 72, still saddened when I hear his voice and remember him. Thank you for sharing.

purplegothicqueen He was also a different favourite of my dad who also sang but was never such a great voice.I grew up listening to the records of Maria Lanza.My mother was the actual collector of his records that she still has today and was a quiet fan of his.

It is truly amazing that a singer who passed away so long ago still captures the imagination of millions. It is a testimony to Mario Lanza's fantastic talent. It was a splendid but short lived career filled with passion and success and some difficult times. At the end, Lanza was back on his way up and was among the most popular entertainers of his era. I recommend reading A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS, and to listen to him as you read the beautiful essays that are a homage to a star who is still with us and will always be with us.

Love Mario Lanza since I was 12 and never died I’ve been listening all my life. (Daddy used to day you’re in love with Mario Lanza) and I suppose it was his passion beautiful voice and looks. Tragedy he died so young. And his wife Betty hicks died shortly from a broken heart Xpatricia

Mario's voice was thrilling like no other. Some songs he sang can't be matched by Caruso, Gigli or Bjorling. I studied with his MGM/RCA conductor, biographer Constantine Callinicos and learned a lot about Mario's life and voice. Mario Lanza was amazing. He sang with a passion that was incomparable. This performance is an example. He sang as if it was his last time. A wonderful book expresses so much about what Lanza was about: A Kid from Philadelphia, Mario Lanza, the Voice of the Poets. It captures his marvelous talent and is worth reading and listening to Lanza at the same time

John Lee I couldn’t agree more, his voice is incomparable, sadly not all opera lovers think the same because he dedicated his life to movies. But nobody sang with the passion and understanding of the music as he did, even if he didn’t have the education of a Caruso. Such a terrible loss to die that young R.I.P. Mario,your voice will live on forever

I agree with you. Andrew Farkas, Biographer of Caruso and Bjorling told me on my radio show; If Lanza had the discipline to match his voice he would have been among the 3 or 4 beat tenors ever. gennieann9 Yes indeed, his voice is one of a kind and I’m so proud that there are others Who recognize this from Brahms 3rd Symphony 😊👍🌹🌺. When Mario sings it, you feel like you are surrounded by angels and your tears are just flowing. I played this to my husband on his death bed,he adored him too,and even though he was already in a coma, the tears were coming...he died listening to Lanza’s voice..I’m glad I could give him that 😪

Sadly, Mario Lanza struggled with his weight. He went on numerous fluctuating diets, which led to his death on October 7, 1959, at the age of 38 years old.

This is actually my dream :D But I'm learning opera as an amateur, so maybe, eventually, in 2 or 3 years... I'll be able to do so ! You don't have to be as good as Lanza to sing, otherwise a only a tiny few would :)

I agree, it is difficult to find his movies. I wish to to buy them on Amazon or even here on KZfaq. I want to see Caruso and the Student Prince. Marcelo, you should see the movie "A Time To Remember." (It's on Amazon for rent)
