This is the best hockey game I ever saw. KDKA, Tuesday night, Lemieux vs Gretzky for the last time. Lemieux had 5 goals. Also, Dave Roche beat Rob Pearson & Leroux completely destroyed Tony Twist. That was a HUGE upset! I'll always remember this iconic game.

Instead of the worst team in nhl history. Just try naming 3 players on that team. Which player would you choose if healthy between, #99 and #66 $1million for a win. 1) For a penalty shot? 2) For a 7 games series? 3) For a 7th game? 4) For an Olympic tournament? 5) For a Stanley cup playoffs run? I absolutely loved Mario. Crazy to think he was such a big man and such a finesse player. All that said, get your rotten tomatoes ready to throw because I've got a spicy opinion you're going to hate. @telquel7843
@telquel7843 3 жыл бұрын
@@That90sShow no doubt the NHL has encouraged the speed of the modern game but I disagree entirely about not having to worry about being hit. People still get flattened on the regular and in general they are moving much faster when they hit now. There is less tolerance for blatant charging etc but even then tons of questionable hits are made every week. People may not like fighting but ultimately, you're way more at risk of a serious injury from an open ice hit or being boarded. As much as it stings my nostalgia to say it, I think the hockey being played today is generally superior to that of the 90s and earlier.

Great careers both Gretzky and Lemieux, however, seeing the goalies playing a more stand-up style compared to the bigger goalies and the butterfly style of today, I don't think they would have scored as many goals. Ditto for many of the prolific goal scores of that era.
@independentmind7782
@independentmind7782 3 жыл бұрын
How do you explain Ovechkin, then? He shouldn’t be as prolific as he is, no? Like Ovi, players like Stamkos, Crosby, Malkin, who have been around for a while but are still active, are also up there on the all time goal per game list. A “pure goal scorer” is just that: a pure goal scorer. They’ll find a way, no matter the size or style of the goaltender.

Lemieux and Gretz in their prime would score + 150 pt per season in todays NHL, Orr too These guys dealt with grabbing holding hooking hacking whacking and vicious slashing on a constant basis. With the space and freedom to maneuver todays sissified league provides they would laughably dominate. They would have todays overinflated goalies out of position with ease
@closethockeyfan5284
@closethockeyfan5284 3 жыл бұрын
@@independentmind7782 That's what makes Ovechkin in particular a marvel, as far as goals go. If Ovechkin played in the same years Gretzky played, we very well might have a different all-time goals leader. @T Vlad Eh, I don't think so. The real restrictions of the Dead Puck Era didn't affect Gretzky until his last two or three seasons when he was already in significant decline. Lemieux was affected only during his comeback, also his past-prime years. They dominated because positioning of both goalies and defenders was laughable in their heyday. On the contrary, they had more space and freedom to maneuver before the Dead Puck Era. Skilled players blew by and worked around shoddy defenses and inflexible goalies like nothing, and today's breed of fast and skilled players would've done the same if they had played back then. Now instead of facing Swiss cheese goalies and big, dopey, unskilled and unorganized pylons on defense, they're facing big, smart, skilled and coordinated defenders with the best and most consistent goaltending the game has ever seen.
