Being a fan of Paper Mario AND Strikers and watching as both series get beaten to a pulp for no reason whatsoever. Is completely asinine and why I've started playing on PC and getting into game dev. It's frustrating that they know for 100% fact that the game was bad. It's not like they don't know what's going on. There's no fucking way they couldn't. The lack of sales. The continuous negative reviews and lack of proper marketing. As a corporation youd think theyd reevaluate or just abandon whatever isn't bringing in money. But no, it feels more like they completely destroy what they make, even if it's successful or popular and then make or remake an uncalled for sequel after fans have been dreaming about for the last 15 years only to half ass it and pretend to care by making you wait for "DLC" characters that have or should've been in the game since the beginning or an unlockable like how Petey was in charged. It was an attempt to make a cheap buck on either hype, nostalgia or FOMO. It's their tactics of seeming innocent and care free then selling you BS in hopes you over look it.. It's not worse than EA. And Nintendo has great games but it's becoming a company that releases half baked games where they rely on DLC to make an unfinished game seem like it's actually bursting with content, or that they actually care about the stories they write and what makes gameplay good for a particular thing when they're practically teasing people at this point for completely uncontrollable situation even for the devs. They're just eating the cost of the budget like they don't care, like these games are just to shut people up I never thought I'd see myself saying this but fuck Nintendo. Kinda hoping this next console does terribly just to bring them back down to earth. No offense to anyone that loves Nintendo. I've been a huge fan of them but it's not wrong to recognize faults and shitty practices.

I hesitated to buy this game because of the immediate backlash, but what convinced me NOT to buy it was the free updates format. I HATE the fact that they lock characters away that should already be in the game for seasonal updates

I watched through the entire video, and throughout it, I kept asking myself "They waited 15 years for.. This? Isn't this just a downgrade in every way?" And I wondered why you weren't that upset, and then I got to the end, and for some reason, when you finally just.. Fucking lost it, it really got to me. I don't think I've ever been so upset at someone else being so upset before, so good job on that. It's truly criminal what they did here. I guess they just didn't care, or thought that people would be desperate for a new entry in the series and buy it (and not refund it lol!).

And to think that there's people who defend this game's lack of content by saying that "the Mario Strikers games never had much content" or that "this game has roughly the same amount of content as the previous games". Look, on the one hand, I can see where they're coming from with that first one, since neither Super Mario Strikers nor Mario Strikers Charged had Smash Bros Ultimate levels of content... but at least those games had SOMETHING to do other than the cups and the free play mode. For example, the first Mario Strikers had the Custom Battles, which is an interesting mode that I'm surprised was never brought back, which essentially allowed you to create your very own cup, either Round-robin style or elimination rounds. Similarly, Charged had the Striker Challenges, which, if you played Charged, you probably already know what they are, but if you don't... Well, think of it like an equivalent of the Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS, to explain it in the simplest of terms. Battle League on the other hand? None of that. Yeah, there's the Strikers Club mode which allows you to play with other people online around the world... but that's the thing: it's only online. For offline plays, you essentially only have the free play and the Cup Battles, and that's it. And as for my other point, "roughly the same amount of content as the previous two games"? If "roughly the same amount of content" means "literally less content than even the first Mario Strikers game", then I guess it is roughly the same amount of content. And yeah, I know there's the updates and all, but even after said updates, Battle League still has less content than the game before it (16 characters and 8 stadiums that all play the same versus 20 characters with different abilities and 17 stadiums that almost all play differently). (Bro, I literally wrote an essay. I know that's something I wanted to get off my chest but jeez Louise 😅)

One thing I immediately noticed is that the game seems way more like the original Strikers than it does Charged - and I haven't even played the original. It almost feels like an alternate universe where Charged never existed, and this game is solely a sequel to the original Strikers. It's weird.

Today, we can call Mario Strikers: Battle League a complete game. We got the final update and it brings back Bowser Jr. from Charged and Birdo gets a promotion from sidekick to fully playable. Another boring grass stadium and one final piece of gear. That's it. Game's done! I think I can say confidently that this has been the WORST handled post-launch content for any Nintendo game I've ever seen! Pauline was the ONLY brand new character that was new to Strikers to show up, the rest were either playable in the original and Charged, or were sidekicks that got bumped up to playable characters. We don't even get a small mini-game side mode to end things off? These updates do NOTHING to fix the game's biggest issue being that after you've played for an hour, you've pretty much seen all the game has to offer! Compare this to Mario Tennis Aces and even Mario Golf Super Rush to an extent. Aces saw support for over a year after it launched, it was heavily shown off by Nintendo, and had a healthy online presence with frequent tournaments. It was up there with Splatoon 2, 8 Deluxe, and even Smash Ultimate. Aces felt like such a higher priority game. Super Rush wasn't that good to begin with, it at least got some pretty good post launch courses and even a few wild picks for characters before, and a new Target Golf side mode. Yeah, they ended updates after not even five months, but even that game saw more care than Battle League. It's honestly an even sadder state of affairs than Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash.

There’s an HD texture pack for Charged that looks superb on Dolphin. Basically if you have a PC, Battle League is worthless.

The game was Shit and it broke my heart I played each game as they came out. Legit everything I wanted from third game...didnt happen. No one fucking wanted armor. One stage? One! One mode. They wanted this game to fail so that they wouldn't have to make another ever again.

14:01 When they got the notice from the league organizers that they were gonna be released from the league and Boom Booms would take their place, at first, the Kritters (obviously) didn't take it well, as they barely gave ANY sort of reason for that replacement. One of the croc-a-likes tried to confort them, as he had some hope that maybe Boom Boom would be a good goalie and a good successor to them. ... And then they saw the first match.

The Rage you express at the end really really resonated with me.

If I may add my two cents: There was a missed opportunity with the music: we could have had a rock-only soundtrack that would have been thematically cohesive AND diverse. Rock is an incredibly varied genre, they could have pulled from all sorts of eras and sub genres. Bowser could have still have a heavy metal theme, but what about giving Diddy a psychedelic rock theme? Or doing something glam rock for Peach? Math rock for Rosalina? Or some old school 60s rock for Luigi? How about 70s punk rock for Waluigi? The soundtrack could have still been mostly heavy by keeping the menu and fields themes as they are, but we would have extracted much more personality from the characters if their themes were more different from each other. Would have been more memorable too. Then again, maybe I would have had an easier time remembering the character themes if they were actually utilized. The music sometimes only kicks in the second before the victory cut scene finishes. I don't even know if each character has their own variation of the loosing theme (in OST uploads on KZfaq each character is said to have a different losing theme, but that all sound exactly the same to me). Speaking of characters, not putting Daisy in the base roster when she was playable in previous entries, but making sidekick Toad playable from day 1 is unfathomably disrespectful, and this is coming from someone who thinks Daisy couldn't be more overrated. Also, I genuinely don't think people would have had an issue with the captain-sidekick system being gone if we had a roster that at least included all the characters from Charged, then those people could recreate their Strikers teams. But if the roster is only going to be 10 characters, then why can I only have Toad and Yoshi (and eventually Shy Guy) duplicates? "It's jarring" isn't an excuse because you see doubles all the time during cup tournaments and online. At that point why can't I make a Waluigi only team? By the way, about that DLC, it's been SIX MONTHS and we've only gotten two updates, the last one being months ago in September. Dataminers back in June figured out that there was room left in the game for 10 more characters, meaning these updates are just Nintendo slowly completing a game they purposefully released with a lack of crucial content like fan favourite characters, a task they seem to have given up on. I'm not sure how to transition to this next point but the game's intro sucks for reasons other than those already mentioned. In the previous Strikers games the intros would make sure to show off all the captains (except Petey due to being unlockable) and nearly all the fields. Battle League's shows one field, and despite having a tiny roster, doesn't even show off everyone (RIP Wario and Waluigi, they couldn't even qualify as water boys and bench warmers). The music is also just kinda there, whereas it was a huge part of the atmosphere in the previous games. Also, this idea to splice battlefields was bad from the get go and dashed any possibility of field gimmicks. Imagine if one half of the battlefield has lava pits you had to move around and the other was just plain grass. Clearly that would make scoring easier for one team and be unfair. Having the field be split so that the sides have different gimmicks/physics that just abruptly start and end once you cross a line is too disjointed for the player, unless these fields are huge, which they clearly aren't. I don't know if this split field idea was decided early into production and thus killed the inclusion of gimmick fields, or if it was a feature tacked at the end to give the impression that the game was offering something new, but it fails either way. A sweeping overview of a thematically cohesive field like in Charged is way more immersive than Bowser's Castle interrupted by Mushroom Hills, which just looks goofy. The only way I can see split fields working is if changes were simply aesthetic (e.g. the Lava Pit from Charged but one side had purple lava and the other pink) - which would still look disjointed -, or if you were able to customize your side of the field as to set booby traps or hazards (e.g. ghosts spawning at certain points on your side of Spooky Mansion), which could give the coins some usage other than gear. But yeah, the worst thing of Battle League's existence imo is the missed opportunity. You can tell there was heart put into this on the developer's part just by how much personality each character has - not just in cutscenes but on the field as well. Just look at Waluigi: he tackles by spinning on his head, he reverts to ragdoll physics whenever he gets hit, and he does the chicken dance to intimidate the other team before a kick off. The devs clearly cared for authenticity, but they were probably held back from going full edgy by higher ups who wanted a cleaner game. The aesthetic of the gear system is a reasonable evolution from the futurist dystopian feel of Charged, but it's too bad this look wasn't applied to the rest of the game the way Charged implemented it into it's select menus and fields. So, yeah. Cool video, I didn't even know Charged had challenges and cheats and record keeping until I saw this, thanks!

Nintendo would have been better off remaking the first game - adding a few characters and stages and slapping online play. That would have turned out a lot better than Battle League.

My biggest disappointment with the way it looks honestly seems so little but they all look like happy little kid characters. Bowsers claws were so epic and they all were angry in their animation so when they celebrated it seemed personal. This magic kinda went away with battle league.

What happened to your old channel? You know during Nintendo's last Direct we got the reveal of Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe, a full blown remake of the Wii game with a new art style, plus some extra content with a new ability, online play, and sub games. Instead of this pathetic piece of trash we got, I would've preferred Next Level Games to make an HD remake of Charged with traditional controls, add in some extra characters and some additional content and call it a day. Taking a deeper look into Battle League itself, the only things new it does are bring Pauline and Rosalina into the game, and the gear system, everything else in the game was done before and way better in the original and Charged. This game didn't need to happen.

Even though super Mario strikers on the GameCube did not have gimmicks for the fields at least they looked visually different during gameplay unlike battle league and yes there were only 7 but it was the first game so you gotta cut it some slack. Like it’s not fair to criticize mario bros on the nes for missing modern mario things because it was the first one.

Most of the Sports game and other Mario spinoffs have been like that. Aces was aight, but was on that "Free updates" crap. THIS doesn't capture that Strikers feeling the first two had. Don't even get me started on Paper Mario.

I LOVED Mario Strikers as a kid. It was my first Mario game where you could play as more than the original 4 or so characters, and I chose Daisy. I LOVED ger, still do. Imagine my disappointment when my favorite game got a reboot and they took out my all time favorite character 😭💔

i havent played battle league myself but i had the same reaction to the first trailer as you. began with lots of hype but came to the realizaiton that this game was not it. everyone was so focused on the artstyle and presentation which admittedly are decent but none of it has the charm that charged has or even the gamecube one has. everything from the characters to the sound effects and overall feel of shooting the ball is neutered. just compare a weak shot in charged to a strong shot in battle league. somehow charged looks and sounds way more crazy even when taking a weak shot, theyre not even close in intensity. even the character animations for scoring/losing suck. nothing happens in the background and the camera is too stable, taking away from the livelihood of it all. makes me so angry that nintendo screwed up this badly

I just missed this video on the old channel around the time until now. I really don't wanna be negative after reading the title but as much as time went on... I am completely devastated... I REALLY desperately wanted to love this game I REALLY do. After 15 years I wanted this for SOOOO long! But... It ruined my love for the series. I am SICK of Nintendo rushing their games and this is the THIRD time since Tennis ACES, and they still do it! WHY?! I just don't understand how forced the developers were having to not make more content as it should. Because I just realized this is mostly in online focused game rather than offline, which is awful. No missions, no story, heck not even unlockables. It is just baffling... Like I said, I waited this game for so long, heck even as my most anticipated game of the year. But man... I just can't help but to dislike it and it makes me so sad to say...

I lost faith in the Switch Mario Sports games when Golf Super Rush came out. Seeing the exact same issues plague a brand new Strikers was such a let down. I grew up with the Gamecube installment and unfortunately missed the boat for Charged. But knowing what I know now, I'll gladly play Charged as the "New Game" and just stop there.

I dont trust Nintendo on making new games for old franchises since Star Fox Zero. After that game, I always wait for them to launch a game, to see if it is actually good before buying it. Because it seems like Nintendo makes two types of games: the ones that they actually care to make ut good (Mario, Zelda, Pikmin) and the ones that shouldnt be worth more than 20 dolars (This game, star fox zero, the new pokemons and more)

A very debunked version of mario striker charge that ruined my teenager years. I think nintendo really did lack of mario sport games instead of improving the mario sport game up content. I think if Nintendo did make Mario Sport Mix revived, they will just debunked everything that is required excited, hyped, and fun. Nintendo only now cates about other games that is really important and fun is Splatoon, Animal crossing, xenoblades chroncils, and etc.

Oh man! Eight months and 3 updates later this game is still being dogshit, like. Even a month after the release of the game it was completely dead both on Twitch and in online matches. You can say that the gameplay is fun and the animations are so well done but those good traits pale in comparison with the mediocre and lacking ones. Really pissed me that they shitted on the hole Strikers series.

13:15 This is what I hate the most about the golie in battle league. Why the fk would that shot stun him? Garbage shot from midfiled from toad. In charged only special shots(which means you always had to fully charge them) would stun him and in GC strikers only charged shots close to the goal would stun him but never noncharged shots especially from longer distance. Since battle league has no special shots only the perfect shot should have chance to stun the goalie but not garbage noncharged shots from mid field.

I loved charged and thinking about this game makes me angry. I have never been more dissapointed but something in my life and now it turn into anger. I think this became my least favourite video game ever. Like, even looking at the 1st trailer again, you realise that they have showed everything in the 1st trailer. This Rosalina shot is only here to bait her simp that she is in the game. No Wario and Waluigi, how slow the action feel. Well at least it represent the game well. "theres not enough characters" There are 10 characters on release and 5 sets of armour. And you can mix and match that armour in any way possible. I wont bother doing the maths, but thats a lot of fking options for stats. We already have defenders, pace merchants, strikers and playmakers. We do not NEED more characters. The literal only reason someone would want more characters is for a skin, which by the way you cant even see the players very well on the field that much, it will not make much of a difference. Besides, most of the good characters were already in the game, the exceptions being daisy and diddy kong
