This game is incredible. One of the few games my dad really got into and we bonded over many a close and brutal matches. 15 years later, he visited me and my little family and I dusted off the old wii while my baby napped. And it was just a good as we both remembered. Except for Petey... darn you and your aimbot you overgrown weed. I looked up my game history, and my last match was a game 3 against Petey where he obliterated me 7-0. Which apparantly crushed my will as a kid because that was my last attempt over a decade ago. But over a couple days of attempts and some rapid improvement. I finally enacted vengeance and put Petey in his place. With my team of turtles: Yoshi, dry bones, koopa, and hammer bro. Felt real good and brought back so many memories. I always wanted to play as the plant.

That part with the narrated match was sick

Your problem is relying on the mega-strike to score goals. As the AI gets more difficult, you have to charge up the ball by passing and take regular shots. It also helps if you have a balanced team of sidekicks. Hammer Bros can take out the goalie with their special, and dry bones can deke into the goal easily if the ball is charged up.

The challenge mode in this game was freaking BRUTAL! It starts off pretty simple but some the handicaps they put on later on frankly kinda ridiculous. One has you play a game where you get no items, one needs you to win by at least 7 goals, another needs you to comeback and win 0-3 with only a minute left

Everyone else when getting shocked: immense pain. Wario: kill me, and I will be more powerful than you can imagine.

Oof, that single player sounds brutal. I only ever played these games co-op at my cousins' house. That crystal cup story you told had me on the edge of my seat haha.

I played Charged at a friend's house and was really intrigued by it so I ended up buying it off of the Wii U's Eshop. I like how the game has a learning curve that really makes players improve their skills at the game. Also the music is God Tier with *Luigi's Theme* being the best example of that

Kritters were the Kremling Grunts from Donkey Kong Country, during a time after RARE was sold to Microsoft the appearance of any DKC character even the Kremling Kritters themselves were a reminder of how special that series was and how much we miss them now because they have been replaced by the Boom Booms. It seems that Nintendo want to erase any existence of the original DKC series from our memories which is one thing I fear the most with recent developments with the Mario and DK series.

I remember playing Charged growing up and those were good memories. Everything about the game was amazing in terms of the game play and animations and I will never forget it. This game was a masterpiece and one of the best Mario Sports Game I've played. Battle League is definitely a cop for me as the gameplay is looking pretty good and animations. Next Level Games really stepping it up.

I actually love the intense difficulty. I guess I just have something masochistic in me, as I love the intense difficulty of something like F-zero gx too.

While i totally agree the tournaments arent structured the best it’s uniquely set up to be just like a season of an actual sport. You spend a ton of time playing regular season games that often don’t matter much just to lose in the playoffs and have to start the whole thing all over again. Honestly makes me feel just an inkling of the despair pro athletes must feel when their entire season comes crashing down.

Never played Strikers so I look forward for Battle League. Even if it's toned down I'll probably check out the Original and Charged.

This was one of my favorite games back on the wii when it came out. You basically hit all the points that i loved about the game and the intensity of the strikers cup as well.

To this day, still the most BS AI in any game I've played. Love it so much. Battle League doesn't hold as well as this game, but at least we got a Strikers game after 15 Years~ (I still can't beat strikers cup ;w;) Edit: Been stuck on Strikers Cup for 15 years...

Couple years ago I set up the original wii back up JUST to play this game by myself. Still as fun and as cool as i remembered. Don’t think Battle League lives up to how epic it was but at least the gameplay is fun. Not as fun, but fun.

You quite literally got me to play this game again. I couldn’t beat diddy Kong as a kid. So that is my goal.

14:54 - I won't lie, I was watching and listening closely all the way through. But at *THIS* part, I practically jumped with anticipation. MFs over here looking like a Hollywood movie scene where everything goes in slow motion showing pinpoint accuracy and perfect timing just before the final moment pay off. Seriously, watching that Boo go in for a headbutt only to be short by a few frames, that gave me goosebumps.🤣👍 (If at all possible, do you happen to have footage of the entire match? I think it would be lots of fun to watch all of that pure clutch gameplay!)

The gameplay in charged was super fun, but the hype animations from the kritters gloating when they block a mega strike to Princess Peach throwing a tantrum to Waluigi flailing around when he gets a goal is what made the game so hype and full of life.

I love strikers charged and I would consider myself above average at video games with high ranks in most games. But the single player is really difficult. Fire cup was generally easy for me. Crystal was difficult but I managed with 1 cup restart . But the striker cup? I got absolutely destroyed. I barely made it to Petey and when I did the CPU’s were relentless. I had to do cheap trick shots with boo to manipulate the Goalie AI and even then it’s still difficult.

Wario just belly flopping was peak comedy.

Charged is still the definitive strikers experience in my eyes... battle league just lacks too many features compared to this game.

I had the exact problem with that Diddy kong cup. It’s absolutely brutal they don’t give you any checkpoints and you have to start from match 1. So I did what any person who didn’t wanna suffer through Petey piranha would do…hacked my Wii U and installed cheats to unlock everything lol

That part explaining the your struggles with the crystal cup was basically how I was feeling the first time I played the game but I was stuck on the strikers cup because I abused the skillshot that hammer bros had to get most my goals so when I got the harder AI I was not prepared for it but after learning more about the game I was good enough to win the cup

i can't blame you for giving up on unlocking petey. it took me literally 5 years of on and off playing to do it, and it was so fucking stressful. i don't remember exactly how i managed it but i think i cheesed it in some way. i still don't feel guilty though because of how insanely difficult that mode is.

I remember the first time I won against Piranha Plant. That match was so hard at the time even though I grinded this game to the limit of my abilities. But the first time I beat the finals of the last cup I just scored one goal at the start of the match and then I kept passing the ball in my backline until the end of the game. Also Bowser + Dry Bones+ Toad + Koopa is broken. Playing this comp never gets old.

I played this a lot back in 2007. I mained Donkey Kong, managed to reach top 10 of the leaderboards online a couple of times and I know I beat Road to Striker Cup without losing on the hardest difficulty at least once. One of my favorite games of all time and it was really underrated imo.

I remember grinding the online ladder on this game when it was out. Think I got to like top 100 in the world for like an hour or so. There is loads of cool techs you could do, like boo and dry bones teleporting into the goal, diddy Kong and toad could jump over the goalie. You could bounce the wall of the corner of the wall and then pass it and it would nearly always score due to the goalie ai being in a bad position. Good times 🙂

Perhaps a better training mode could improve the road to the striker cup. Something like Geometry Dash has would probably be ideal. In that game, making a single mistake sends you back to the start of the level, but there's a practice mode where you can put checkpoints anywhere, so you can practice the hard parts in a risk-free environment. A structure like that would keep the thrill of rising to the top, while making it more fair

Best game of the series Strikers Charged was. Only let down by the Wii Motion Controls, should have had Classic Controller and GameCube Controller options like Mario Kart Wii had. Other than that, with the personality of the characters, presentation and the different sassy/funny animations with each character in the game from the Team Captains and Sidekicks. Best Mario Strikers game ever. Though the original Mario Strikers Gamecube controls are better in my personal view.

Hopefully this latest iteration is better not much faith as of now that it will happen

I have played this game for ages and Just 2 days ago i played Witherspoon my friends . I can tell you that this game is a masterpiece . It took like 10 years to me for finishing the stiker cup

Watching you go through Crystal Cup was a bit weird as I don't recall it being that hard for me as a kid. Maybe it's bc I usually spammed Hammer Bros and Dry Bones' abilities and rarely doing Megastrikes? Who knows. Right now I can't play the game bc of my handicapped Nunchuk and I don't wanna buy a new one, and I can imagine that all these years of atrophy will definitely pay off if I try the game again

Yes, I grew up with this game as the first ever Mario Strikers game, with Super Mario Strikers as my 2nd and then with Mario Strikers Battle League as my 3rd!

I couldn't unlock Diddy Kong as well, so I often got screwed over in the Crystal Cup winning most of the games and only loosing to Diddy Kong because of how strong his team was, then I had to go all the way back to the start of the cup if I failed. So other than the Wii motion controls being annoying for me, the way how if you failed against Diddy Kong and you had to go back to the start of the cup all over again really was punishing and didn't make me want to unlock him. Petty Piranha I would guess was too tough that I wouldn't be bothered if I had massive trouble against Diddy Kong.

Can’t wait for Battle Arena and I hope it diverges from the recent Mario sports games and all their free dlc

Super Mario Strikers and Charged are a great duology. I’m optimistic that Battle League can make this all a great trilogy.

unfortunately I dont see battle league being even as good as the original strikers, but just goes to show how amazing this two games are, everything about them feels just right, you see the passion behind everything and how they wanted to give a new take on this stale characters

You know, I find this coincidence kind of funny. Change the original's platform from Gamecube to DS and bump up the third game's release date by 6 months, and you basically got the story of Big Brain Academy almost one to one with the one for Mario Strikers

Aww man this game was amazing. If you want to beat the last cup I recommend you playing with someone else's help. Needed my sister for that because like you said, the AI on your team are completely dim-witted. Trust me it's still hard with just one other person in my case, my sister who only wanted play along-side me because she hated losing. So she wasn't super experienced.🤣 But the shared anxiety and intense feeling you get playing with others doesn't piss you off as much or make you feel alone when you lose.

I personally felt that the difficulty wasn't too much of an issue for me. Sure it was hard at times but I never once thought of it being unfair. Of course the enemy bum rushes you when doing a megastrike, and ofcourse you gotta go after them manually when they do theirs. I got good at hot switching between characters at a moments notice and I found out everything the bots can do the player can do and the can do better. So I'd hate to be that guy but skill issue.

The first time I beat Road to Striker Cup was with Peach and an army of Toads. You can probably tell why I chose that. And I know at certain moments, the CPU will cheat because there are few times when a CPU Captain goes for the megastrike, I tried to tackle them but then SUDDENLY, one of the opposing sidekicks tackled me back before I even got a chance to cancel their megastrike. Which means basically you, alone, will always go against FOUR REAL COMPUTERS AT ONCE! Hopefully the Next Level Game developers will reduce the cheating system in Battle League.

I still remember making it to the Striker Cup vs Petey like a decade ago, I was Bowser Junior and every time I'd go up a goal, I'd just camp in the goalies crease for the entire remaining 2 minutes because Petey scared me so much lol. That's how I beat the game btw, oops.

u can do the single player coop if need be, otherwise work on your plays over trying to get strikes. Its difficult single player makes it more interesting than it would otherwise be, as its a rather mundane setup, all of which u said, a minute more into the video, from where I was, lol

As much as I liked charged I think the original is infinitely better. The controls felt better and honestly it looked better to me. Also the hits felt much more powerful. Charged has it beat on personality but at least I could beat strikers without having to throw hours and hours and hours away. Still a great game but I think my favourite Mario sports game is still Mario golf on the 3ds

The kritters were replaced for good reason. They havent been in any sort of mainline game in over 25 years. They are irrelevant as characters to the point where most of nintendo’s modern audience wouldnt have a clue who he is.

Wow, as someone who has never played a Strikers game before, the way they handled the cups here sounds awful. I get the rewarding feeling from making it to the end, but it doesn't need to be THAT punishing.

Winning with Waluigi + 3 Boo just means you are a cheating loser. Characters should not be able to telleport/float through the goalie. My family always banned this as a house rule. Online multiplier really sucked because no one was mature enough to actually play with skill, it was just a constant barrage of bs exploits.
