Just yesterday I thought, it has been awhile since Marius posted a video. Glad to see you back. I love your creativity and ingenuity.

Having a dedicated circuitbreaker for just the lathe (or other large equipment) is very good. In the (however unlikely you think it is) event something goes wrong with the lathe and the breaker trips, you won't also be in the dark suddenly with a metal object that hasn't stopped spinning yet. As for the VFD, I'd put it on the bandsaw. Both to prevent the blade and/or belt from slipping on the wheels and/or pulleys, aswell as being able to control the speed.

Lovely chip displacement on those new forstner bits. The displacement is why they take less effort to use. The payoff is the mess.

I did try some very high quality Forstner bits last year. The holes were so clean cut and smooth, it shocked me. That plane was delightful. Good tools are a joy, every time you pick them up.

I wouldn't mind seeing that gift truck make a stop at my residents ! Marius it's a wonderful thing that someone is moved watching your video's and the projects to send you such a great plane. Be sure and show us what you come up with to do your sharpening station. That would be an interesting video.

I have a California Air Tools compressor, which seems to be the primary USA based distributor that uses those motor/pumps. It's so lovely to have something that's so much quieter than a traditional one, and still can have decent air flow.

Very nice Forstner Bits, a little pricey but as my Dad use to say you get what you pay for. What I say is " Buy right cry once " ! Nice video, will look for the next one :-)

Hi Marius. Advance the inverter speed slowly and jot down the frequencies where the inverter is loudest. The manual should have a section called "Skip Frequencies". There should be several registers where you can program the inverter to skip over the most annoying frequencies. You can put a bi-metal blade on the bandsaw and slow the blade down to cut metal.

Lie Nielsen is the bee's knee -- I have their box plane and it's just a pleasure to use.

I put a VFD on my Clausing floor standing drill press, which already had a mechanical variable speed drive, and I really like it. It's great for when I use large bits in metal or hole saws because I can turn the speed way down and still get adequate torque. I no longer fear the bit grabbing hold of my work at high revs and flinging it across the room or at me. Putting it on the bandsaw may allow you to cut metal since you want a much lower blade speed for metal cutting.

I've been using that VFD for the CNC machine / controller I built. The manual was a bit confusing but I managed to programme it to toggle between PWM input and the potentiometer to control speed. I like how futuristic it sounds.

the full vfd noise got my cats' attentions! Definitely put the VFD on the band saw. That is one thing you could best use variable speed on, and the soft start would help that belt shock when starting.

Fequency drive for the bandsaw. Beter for metals. Keep the vids up! You’re the one of the best sharing with Mathias Wandel, Ave and Diresta. You have lots of inspiering video’s to me. Keep the vids up! And i get it. Running a hobby/semi-prof shop and studing the same time is difficult.

The sound of that VFD is so recognisable... At my job we use a couple of those to regulate the rpm on 5kw motors driving blades in large 5000 liter mixing tanks, with high viscousity fluids. Especially in winter, they really scream at low frequencies :)

You don't need new blast gates if you were to put the VFD on the dust collector. Just add one magnetic reed switch on all of them, the same type of switch you find on a wired alarm system. Magnet on the sliding portion of the blast gate and the magnetic reed switch on the stationary side. Look at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbmfja1kyNjNd3k.html to see how he have done it. Also another note on the VFD, use a shielded cable between the VFD and the motor, else you can get interference in your electrical system, which really isn't good. Still, really nice to see that you are active again, and I hope that we don't have to wait so long for the next video!!

VFD on Dust Collection thought: Instead of wiring to each blast gate, you could use a pressure sensor in the system next to the collection unit and some sort of simple monitor (like an arduino) that would then regulate the system pressure by increasing or decreasing the motor RPM. That way whenever you open or close a blast gate, the system would adjust accordingly. Not sure if the VFD you have would accept an external input like that, but would be a cool project if it did.

For the VFD noise, you could make a small box, with a speaker, microphone, amp, and some circuitry that would allow you to put the sound directly out of phase. This would cancel the sound.

Thank you for showing that 3D printers can be realy useful and not just for printing stupid figures and toys.

Bandsaw makes more sense than extraction really. Although it could be cool to see you do the wiring and stuff on the extraction.

I vote for using the VFD to upgrade the metal lathe to a 3 phase AC motor with proper speed control. The dc motor solution normally installed in these types of lathes, are a bit low on torque at low RPM. You will enjoy the upgrade if you are doing any screw cutting in the future.

I think the dust collector would be a better choice for the VFD. If you don't know about it, look up "87Hz", you could get a lot more power out of the dust collector for free by running it faster.

WARNING- Don't use compressed air near a lathe!!!! One of the first rules of machining. Use a brush, it will prevent chips from getting inside the lathe.

You might want to set up some air-reservoirs close to each use area. Those air-lines will give quite a bit of air resistance.

Use it on "knifemakers" belt sander. Dont have belt sander? Build one! :D

Now that you have the cheap and the good ones, you could look at some differences and if its possible to modify the cheap ones to be more like the good ones, so people could upgrade their cheap stuff themselves...

The VFD noise made my dog JUMP! He needed the exercise anyway.

I'd say putting the VFD on your dust collector system makes much more sense, since that is a very beefy motor to start up and requires a whole lot of current the traditional way. Also, you can adjust the speed to the point you impeller runs most efficient, if needed. I don't see a sense in putting it on the Bandsaw, since you will always work with the same speed just like the table saw. ps. I just finished putting a 4 kW Motor (3 phase 380 V) on my 20 inch Bandsaw (wandel design) and using a star-delta switch allows me to spin it up without noise or smoke from the v-belt. You might want to consider that option? You can find new ones for under 20 EUR on Ebay. Greetings

The effort adding a microswitch on blast gate and some relay logic. I would recommend you a star/delta starter for bandsaw.(You don't have to buy it,just buy two contactors and timer relay)The relays would probably solve logic for the collector (big machine switches hi fr./delta and small lo fr./star)

The bandsaw seems like it needs the VFD more. Also nice catch on the outtakes.

I would use the VFD on the bandsaw, it should be a quick easy install and you will be able to use it right away. You can always move the VFD to the dust collector later on, it shouldn't be too hard to restore the bandsaw back to how it is now. If you put the VFD on the dust collector, you have to install all the wiring and switches before you can get to use it, and if you decide afterwards to move the VFD to the bandsaw you will be left with wiring to your blastgates which is no longer needed. I would go with the bandsaw.

Put the vfd on the lathe. It's the only device that you've listed that'd make a great use of the vfd

Go the Aldi air line. Going by the colour and lack of cutting capacity I'm guessing the old Forstner Bits were Aldi as well? :) I bought some Aldi Spade Bits a while back. All of them were bent. Garbage! Although I have acquired quite a collection of their squeeze clamps, and the backpack vacuum cleaner I bought this week can pull aircraft out of the sky.

i would say use the VFD for your laymachine or drillpers, somethimes it is more handy. You can than run for some application very slowly.

I think you need the VFD on the bandsaw more, and it being the much easier project is another benifit :D

You could use the VFD to have the CNC router speed managed by Grbl/G-code and also have it run slower than it can do by itself.

The VFD should go on your drill press. No more changing belts.

Bandsaw for VFD to allow slow speed operation for metal cutting. It then adds real functionality rather than just adding niceities.

Would be much better to use a soft starter instead of a vfd if you only intend to ramp up the speed of the band saw. Running a vfd for the dust collector on the other hand makes sense as you can control the speed depending on what tool you are running and how much vacuum power you need. More work, but a better use of a vfd

ich habe einen frequenzumformer an der bohrmaschine dran. links- rechts lauf, variable geschwindigkeit. allerdings musste ein 3 phasen motor her. ich denke hier macht das mehr sinn als an der bandsäge. eine motor hast ja noch über. vielleicht passt der ja. es sei denn deine maschine hat die features schon. ansonsten hätte ich wohl die absauganlage gewählt.

Great video as always! I'd definitely like to see the variable frequency drive on the band saw, I was thinking you could put a metal cutting blade on the band saw and run it nice and slow and possible cut metal. Of course maybe the motor wouldn't be very powerful at a speed that slow.

I've just changed the brushes in my Makita LXT drill. After 49 years of doing stuff, I've never needed 3 hands, one to hold the screw, one to hold the drill, and one to bang the back of the drill to *engage* the brushes. I'm not sure this is correct hahaha
