Mark Blyth, political economist at Brown's Watson Institute, and Carrie Nordlund, political scientist and associate director of Brown's Master of Public Affairs program, share their take on the week's news.
This week's topics: Boris Johnson's prospects as MP, Trump's newest racist tweets, Facebook's $5b privacy fine, the underpaid Women's US soccer team, and what to expect in the next ~120 Democratic debates. Mark and Carrie also invent 'Uber for Dogs'?

As a belgian I'd like to point out hat We don't have a government at the moment once again and it's clear we're gonna break the previous record of not having one. Just the way we like it to be fair!

"hard exit" was always on the cards, not because of any British politician,but because the eu are not able to offer "a deal" without breaking their own rules. Its obvious.

Yeah. Leaving is stupid. But it is democracy. It is the will of the people, even if they were manipulated and lied to to get it.

I don't know if you'll read this Mark, but in your recent lecture titled "So can we have it all"? You seemed to imply, briefly, that you expect Scotland to vote for independence... Am I right in inferring that? If so, would you please write or record more information about the reasons why you think this will be the case, and what Scottish people can expect in a post independence country. I would be infinitely grateful to you for doing so. All the very best.
@SuperSpidey313
@SuperSpidey313 5 жыл бұрын
Why will they vote for independence? In 2014, the Scottish referendum vote was 55.3% "no" and 44.7 "yes" If the UK goes for a hard Brexit, Scotland will be more in favor of "yes" to leave so they can stay in the EU. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Scottish_independence_referendum. Nicola is already calling for another referendum because of Boris Johnson.

@@SuperSpidey313 Leaving would be stupid. But to stay, or to have another referendum would undercut the democratic process.

I'd like to hear mark comment on the inherent threat of a Deutsche bank collapse. Why it hasn't happened yet? Why the market hasn't attacked it? Why the rating agencies still give it a good grade? And why mainstream media doesn't go near the subject. I was talking to someone from bank of america who said the banking community was terrified of its collapse

Re: Air conditioning. Humans can only "adapt" to heat to a point. Once the wet bulb temperature hits 95 F (35 C)*, sweating no longer cools the human body, so that's the temperature at which people die. Air conditioning is a necessity of life in some areas already; as more parts of the globe become susceptible to heat waves that can reach killing temperatures, the need for air conditioning will increase. * Corresponding dry bulb temperature (which is what your average thermometer measures) at sea level and 50% relative humidity is 115 F or 46 C. Most of Earth's population is in coastal areas, which will have a higher relative humidity and therefore need a lower dry bulb temperature to reach killing temperatures.

@@SalmonFume If you're in northern Europe, I guess you could always hope for the weakening Atlantic thermohaline circulation to shut down completely. It's the reason northern Europe doesn't have the same climate as Siberia*, despite being at the same latitude. * Where it's currently 10-15 C warmer than average, thanks to the increasing loss of ice at the North Pole.

Tell that to the Aussies, or the people of Namibia. 40’C at 2pm in January is no big deal. People work, even exercise, outdoors in that; so do people in other parts of the world like the Gulf states in July. For them 50’C is the time to feel concerned. By contrast, people from those parts can’t believe that Canadians, for example, feel comfortable in summer outfits when the temperature in the northern provinces in early June doesn’t top 12’C. You are right to be concerned about global warming, bearing in mind that it takes a lot to kill a human being accustomed to living in extreme environments.

Brilliant as usual ... but Scotland??? The next Denmark? How about the next Greece? No, wait ... Greece has way more going for it but Germany got in the way. Little Nicky needs a heart-to-heart with Yanis Varoufafis; golf, whisky, farmed fish aka salmon & tourism won’t pay the freight. Westminster is what it is but its on the same island shared by all British people. You want Sturgeon tugging on Merkel’s apron strings? Heaven help us! ;)
