AMEN! Farner has clear-as-a-bell vocals. I cut my music appreciation teeth on Grand Funk Railroad as a young teen in the mid 70’s and Farner’s vocals became ingrained into my soul as a part of me. I LOVE to hear that man sing. And his guitar playin’ prowess is world-class! I think he’s absolutely one of the greatest guitarists out there. And from every interview I’ve watched and listened to that he’s participated in, it’s easy to see that Mark is one of the most down-to-earth, thoughtful, friendly, caring brothers on the planet. To have a conversation with him would surely be a grand treat and a pleasure for anyone. To have had him as a friend in life would have been a joy indeed.

I respect Mark for turning down the heavy drug life. Imagine how much peer pressure he was given weekly. I think he was meant to see Hendrix fail on stage big time. That was your Divine Intervention, Mark. I had same type of social experience and I gave all that shit up ,including bar hopping and drinking 35 years ago. I put my half drunk beer bottle on the bar at my buddies bar ,looked in the wall mirror behind the booze bottles, saw an aura around my head reflection ,looked left and saw a dude fall off his stool and hit the floor hard. I looked at my bartender buddy and said," Jerry..I am leaving and never coming back. I am done with this life." His jaw dropped and I quit drinking that night forever. Divine Intervention folks! It happens. Peace. (PS Out of a total of 10 band members from 3 rock groups, only 4 of us remain alive. .alcohol and drugs killed them in the end.) I am 72.

@@navagatingthroughthebeasts2908 USUALLY that divine intervention thing (a very real thing) only happens to those who will get on their knees and ask God for it (while offering to Him REAL, FIRM commitments of what you will and won’t do from then on). Mark Farner has done that. He prays. I’ve done it. I know a lot of others who have done that and gotten permanently clean and sober with His help/Grace. I also know plenty of folks who want out of vice-city and say they want out of vice-city, and hope to someday be clean and sober, but have never gone to Christ personally and humbly to ask Him for His strength and guidance to get them thru to being clean. They think they can do it without Him. That’s the OPPOSITE of being humble. Those are the ones I see who never seem to break those chains their personal vices have on them and nothing ever changes. DON’T be THAT guy. Go where you need to go (☝🏼) to get it done. Do it now. DON’T WAIT.

Fun fact: Joe Walsh and Mark Farner both have the same R&B/Soul influences. Both fans of Howard Tate--part of the reason why the James Gang and GFR sound so much alike is that raw, funky sound both bands got from Tate's music and Stax--with guitars replacing horns. The first James Gang album has a cover of Tate's "Stop"--a song I can see Mark and company doing the very same way!

Mark Farner and Ronnie Van Zant were my biggest influences ever since I was 7 years old. (Thanks to older brothers) I never started in a band until about 7 years ago, BLACK WATER CANYON. When people listen to me sing with my band, they say they hear GRAND FUNK and SKYNYRD. Thank you Mark, a true blue man, excellent song writer, cool guitar player, natural feel singer and relentless performer. Don is a cool style drummer and Mel is a fantastic bass player. No wonder they blew the doors off of Led Zeppelin back in '69/70/71. But lets be REAL here: without Mark Farner, there is no Grand Funk.

I remember back in the 1970’s Mark would tell people in a lot of interviews not to do hard drugs and was very much against hard drugs. I saw Grand Funk Railroad around 5 years back at the Natchitoches Jazz Festival and the band played, sang, and preformed like they were 25 years old, they hit every single note perfect, had phenomenal timing, and the drummer still did what sounded like the same drum solo he did in the 70’s that went on for a long time. The guys were in great shape and played like the Super Stars they are. It was an amazing performance and it blew fan’s mind how great they sounded. Talk about dedication to one’s craft. This band deserves any and all awards, plus any recognition they receive, they have truly earned it the hard way and have cut no corners. If you get a chance to see them, please take advantage of it, I promise you will not be disappointed, you will be amazed. Thank you.

Mark talking about Jimi made me remember a story about Jimi , He was coming to Charlotte , I was so pumped about this, but what was so weird was he was opening for the dam monkees ! And for weeks was wondering how was this gonna workout ? The night of the show got there early ,was doing some acid stayed outside smoked some pot and saw all these little kids holding their dads and mommy's hands crossing the parking lot and going inside, and realized just how many more little kids there were than the older teens as my self, so I knew I wasn't gonna get away with smoking any pot inside, so we smoked one more and went inside , It was like walking into the biggest Day Care you could imagine ! Jimi came out played one song there was hardly a reaction from the crowd, he started song # 2 and those little devil's come alive booing , screaming, and throwing paper cups and everything else they could get their hands on ! It was awful ,He walked off stage through the curtains halfway through the second song ! Then he burst through the curtains walked to front stage with his guitar hanging off his back, And with both hands high in the Air gave the whole coliseum 2 of the prettiest birds you ever seen, And promised Charlotte that he would never play our town ever again ! Didn't get to see him again until July 4 1970 at the Atlanta Pop festival about 1:00 Saturday morning , I was up front of stage 15 or 18 feet away , there were more than 400,000 there, and for a few years Genesis labeled it the largest mass gathering ever ! Until Abba played Central Park which was said a million people showed up for them ! I really had some great times in my teen years to me it was perfect timing ! I was 15 years old hitchhiking everywhere ! I always had good luck catching rides so much so many times had cars pulling over as I was getting out of cars, they would say we been behind y'all and seen you were not dangerous so decided to give you a ride as well ! Times are so much different now days !!

Red, Gold, and then in the latter 70's early 80's Sensi & Maui. The one is indica, the other Sativa. I don't partake anymore, for it just makes me thirsty. I'm an alcoholic, soooo. I did get to see Mark with Don&Mel on their reunion tour on 4/22/98. What a show. That show helped me change my life. I was smoking crack back then, and I was so tired of missing everything. I had about 40$ on me and I saw Grand Funk's name on the Syracuse Landmark Theater marque. Standing there looking up at their name in lights, with my hand in my pocket fumbling and mumbling the cash, thinking, " What am I gonna get, an hour of peeping out my window, then going crazy after, or buy a ticket to one of my favorite bands from when I was growing up ". I was so sick and tired of not having anything, not doing the things I would like to do, because of my drug addictions. Seriously folks. I had a place that had a chair and couch that I pulled from the trash, and an old B&W TV, that had no antenna because I snapped it off to use as a crack stem. The only reason I had a place was that I worked for a slum lord. So, looking up and thinking of seeing and hearing Grand Funk jam Heartbreaker, I went up and bought a ticket. I had enough money left to buy the big bottle of MD2020 and a pack of smokes, drank it down, and went in. After the show, I went and told a couple of the people I hung around back then, crackheads like me too, and you know what, they all said that they wish they could do that, and one said that it was an inspiration for him. I didn't completely sober up right away, but that Grand Funk show was the start of it. The year 2020 was the last time I've induced, imbibed, whatever, and it all started with a Rock&Roll Show. BTW, I have nothing against weed, if you can, you can. I just can't.

Mark, Mel, Don and chicks are the reason why i have loved rock n roll since i was 11 yrs old in 1970s. im originally from michigan born and raised. Grand Funk R/R was and is your band 4life, every household i can remember being in..all had a one or more of Grand Funk R/R LPs in ther record collection, was listening to an GFRR 8 track in the car or had their whole GFRR album collection on Reel to Reel. i cant speak for the rest of the states or the world, i can only speak from my experience. i still love my GRAND FUNK RAIL ROAD IN 2021 Mark Mel and Don are the orginals and are the reason 'Classic Rock' is a sound that producers try to duplicate today. you cant duplicate Grand Funks sound..its nothing tangible..its not a setting on some knob...or a program. its all the elliments in what you heard that day in 1970 at the Atlanta Pop Fest..whom played for FREE and blew the roof off the place a non known 3 piece band with a set of originals..they werent fake..they came prepared to be what they became and then some. my older brothers and sister attended that show..it took a few days for them to explain all that they experienced durring the trip..the fest..the people, the bands..i dont know if this was ever said to the band, or ever quoted in some magazine..but my family said GFRR was so fresh and heavy hitting that day..and for a non known band..a controversy arrose through the crowd..was this band really a garage band this f'n good? fresh on the scene ..or some corrporate joke (exact words) i dont know why Terry did what he did..makes no sense years after the fact. all bizzar to this day.

Thanks! Mark Farner is a high energy guy. I'm 32 years clean and sober, not even weed. I stopped smoking cigarettes when I was 20. And the Jimi story reminded me of when I did some long lines of what I was told was coke, but was really PCP. That changed my life and a few years later led to me getting sober. I wouldn't tell anyone what to do with drugs and booze, but the success story never being told after drugs is true! I wouldn't trade places with anyone. For anti-inflammatory my wife and I take turmeric and boswellia. I'm 52, Mark's probably 20 years older, but I have no pain. Jimi was my hero growing up because we're left handed. But in the end, what Jimi did in his life caused the end result. I just lost my sister earlier this year, dead at aged 52 from alcoholism.

Mark came to Victorville CA in 1988, and played a small club called Pegasus. He had a great back-up band with him. They performed all of the hits, and sounded unbelievably good. Marks vocals were pitch perfect. I was blown away. After the show, I saw a friend of mine who was with the local press. She was on her way to interview him, and I tagged along. After her interview, I got invited into his bus and sat with him at the little dinette where we had a nice "one on one" for about 20 min. He couldn't have been more down to earth. He even autographed my "Caught In The Act" CD. It was one of 3 "Brushes with Greatness" in my 63 years, and I'll never forgret it! (The other 2 "Brushes" were when I got to meet Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire at MGM Studios when I was in High School!)

I never thought much of Grand Funk Railroad, while growing up in the Heavy Metal years of the late 70's and early 80's, because rock radio only played a few of their songs that were mediocre at best. Then out came the movie " Law Abiding Citizen" , and the song " Sin Is A Good Man's Brother ", and I was totally blown away by it. I had never heard it before then, and a lot of their other songs were not known to me either. I was 6 years old when this song was released, and 45 when I first heard it. I've been a GFR fan ever since. That song is more relevant to the times now, than it was in 1969,in my opinion.

Yeah, you’re right. Hendrix, by all accounts, was a generous, kind man, but his drug-taking gave him a pretty messed up sense of what was harmful and what wasn’t. What could be a problem with a heroin - coke mash-up?

I went to see Grand Funk Railroad at the fair ground in Salt Lake city in 2014. Looked at the band never seen them live before and immediately knew the guy on Lead guitar was not Mark Farner. Its was strange. I only saw their Album cover from the 1967 Album cover (Survival ) Later I find out they had split apart. One of the best rock & roll band of all time. I wish these guys would get back together one last time. The crowd will BE HUGE !!!! mARK fARNER IS gRAND fUNK RAILROAD.

Great story, I was Mark and Jimi’s biggest fan back in the 70’s. I had my OD scare while listening to Jimi at a weekend skinny dipping keg party at “Hidden Lake” Someone brought a tank of nitrous oxide to the party, I remember being semi conscious with my head under the bumper of a running muscle car while Jimi was playing live at Woodstock. I remember thinking if I could move I would get out from under this piece of shit car before I die from the exhaust. I only smoked pot after that and only drank alcohol in moderation for the rest of my life! Jimi kept me awake, kept me focused maybe saved my life, thanks brother, I love you man.
