Seems to me like Mark Hammil is truly and the most loyal person related to SW ever. Perhaps even more than George himself. I love the prequels btw. I can see issues where people point but I love it. Now, the sequels are a whole different thing. I hate that. But that's just me. May the Force be with you!

@@CT71776 because it lacks a ton of the charm that the OT had and has some silliness and akward decisions. It also was directed by George and George didn’t even want to direct the prequel trilogy because he knew that it needed someone better

I think it just have a different kind of charm. Although Lucas proved to be not the best director, and this is where the awkward acting comes from. Bad acting is bad directing, as the saying goes. Like, when the OT was filmed, Lucas was a relatively unknown director and he was roughly the same age as the cast, so they felt okay to correct him, fix the dialogues, improvise and so on, when the Prequels were filmed Lucas was a big Hollywood figure and the Star Wars were legendary, so the younger actors probably were in awe and trusted his writing and directing completely. For me, the Prequels had a more serious tone and tried to tell a different kind of story. The machinations of Palpatine and political stuff of the Republic were pretty boring to me, I admit, but when I grew older I actually liked plots about scheming. While the OT was an uplifting story about a boy becoming a hero, the Prequels are a tragedy of a hero becoming a villain. In time, even Anakin's whiny and over the top emotional behavior made sense to me, he is a teen who used to suppress his emotions for whole life, and when his emotions come to extreme, when his mother died horrible death as he held her, when he was scared that he would lose his love the same way, he just couldnt contain it. Add the self-guilt because he feels things he was taught to avoid, high expectations from his mentor, distrust from the Jedi council, a major secret of him being married, which is strictly forbidden and could get him kicked out of the only society he knows, and two years of total war on the frontline on top and you get an explosive combination of unsolved personality issues.

Star Wars fans are lucky that the OG hero, our hero, is such a fan himself in real life. He truly loves it and cares about it as we do. He's made himself part of the community, whereas Harrison Ford would like to never have to think about it again 😂 Mark couldve easily been like that too, it's always hit or miss with celebs and the movies they play in, even more so when the genre is fantasy. He cares so much, he fought for us during TLJ. Most actors wouldn't even give it a second thought

I grew up on both trilogies, while they are far from perfect, I still love them. They are both different which is a good thing. I love the Originals but the Prequels might win it in my eyes because of the expanded story, blurred lines between good and evil and the great spinoffs, like Clone Wars. I wish fans didn't crap all over the prequels as much as they did. If not we might have had a half-decent conclusion to the Starwars universe.

I'm a firm believer that everyone has their right to their own opinions, & everyone shouldn't be expected to agree. That said, I can totally respect where Marcia Lucas is coming from on this. Undoubtedly, she invested a lot of herself in the original trilogy & helped her ex-husband make it the masterpiece it is today. From that line of thought, it's easy for me to see how she'd believe George screwed up on the prequels. I think he screwed up with some of the revisions he did to the original trilogy, so there's numerous things I don't like in the prequels. Of course, there are things I actually like in the prequel trilogy, too, but I'd never say it measures up to the originals.
@bonehunter163
@bonehunter163 2 жыл бұрын
"Attack of the Clones" was better. Less Jar Jar was a drastic improvement. The story was overall better. Anakin seemed like he came off a bit too whiny for someone who was supposed to have been trained as a Jedi for years & was no stranger to combat. The lightsabers didn't look cheap. Count Dooku & Jango Fett were great additions to the character roster. By this point, it felt like the story had been thought out a little better than the previous film, which seemed like George had trouble thinking of a way to introduce the story. All in all, this movie was a drastic improvement, & had me anticipating the last film in the prequel trilogy.
@bonehunter163
@bonehunter163 2 жыл бұрын
I believe "Revenge of the Sith" was the film George most had fleshed out in his mind. I honestly believe he had an idea what was going to happen in this film before he had planned the others, even though my sister met him in Chicago several years before the prequels were released & he told her that he already had plans to release more Star Wars movies at that time. So, I have the least complaints about this movie of any of them. Anakin's desire to protect those he loved was already established, & makes sense to anyone how that is what could be used to corrupt him. We got to see Obi-Wan at his strongest, & felt how he was broken emotionally by Anakin's betrayal. General Grievous, while obviously a gimmick character, was more comical than annoying, & seemed to foreshadow what was to become of Anakin. Getting to actually see Palpatine wield a lightsaber was a treat we'd never gotten before this movie, & his fight with Yoda helped us understand why the old Jedi Master was so leery of Luke facing the Sith Master in "Return of the Jedi". This movie did a great job of summing up how the original trilogy would come to be.

Return of the Jedi was criticized at its premiere, when the Phantom Menace came out they began to defend the last of the originals. If it was possible to make it in the ‘70s, it would have been a breakout smash hit, the likes that had never been seen before.. The prequels as a complete body of work are quite something. The amount of critiques on the prequels are minor compared to the Disney films. Maybe a few cringe romance lines… a little to much cgi and jar jar maybe had to much of a part or survived things he shouldn’t have but other than that the prequels have that unforgettable magic touch of George Lucas… perfect casting, unforgettable music score, great fight sequences, very interesting characters, very scenic/climatic scenes, pays homage to the lore of the origin series.. adds to it.. leaves you wanting to know more or wishing the order 66 scenes were longer or that u knew those counsel members more.. made you love mace windu despite his briefly he was in the movie and jango fett and darth maul… not to mentions the costumes especially on Amidala were spectacular 😍. If I’m not mistaken they won for best costumes. I have been a huge fan of the franchise since the beginning. I grew up on a heavy dose of SW my whole life, and still love it to this day. I think that the prequels were extremely challenging to watch initially, but even in my own attachment to the original trilogy I knew that I had now outgrown the franchise. I tried watching the prequels many years after and could not stomach them, until my brother, who is an even bigger fan (and loves the prequels) told me to check out the Clone Wars series. I think that it was that series that allowed me to go back and watch the prequels again, allowing me to truly enjoy them and look forward to the new ideas within the franchise. The sequels in my eyes tried to challenge the audience with new philosophies and critiques on the good vs. evil narrative. I think that it all comes down on whether you can stomach the second of the three, and only then I learned to move on. I think that nowadays, the Mandalorian has brought us full circle and rescued the child within us older folks by letting us know that we still form the foundation to the whole thing, as it moves in its unpredictable directions.

You're right. Also, people can bs all they want but the story in the prequels is straight up better than the original trilogy's. I like the originals alot and episode 5 is the best movie of all of them but the story was really lackluster comparatively. Even george lucas looking back says that the rebels were really just terrorists, (not that the empire are really good guys either). Clone wars was a way more interesting war than the empire fighting some rebels. Phantom menace was pretty slow and I think that's why alot of people's first impressions of the prequels were bad, but then episode 6 was also a very slow movie that's pretty boring for stretch. Episode 2 was good and episode 3 was fantastic so really both trilogies had 2 good/great movies and 1 average/decent movie.

I saw the midnight premiere of TPM. Crowd full of amped up hardcore fans. As the final fanfare blared and the end credits began, the audience was awkwardly silent for a few seconds then someone started clapping. Then the rest of us were like "Well, alright I guess we'll clap too". We were all confused about what we had just watched. None of us wanted to admit we didn't like it but we couldn't pretend to be jazzed about it either.

Roy Rogers had Gabby Hayes, etc. That is the genesis of the hated Jar-Jar Binks. Personally, I thought it was great to see The Old Republic at its height.

I will break it down for you as a very young kid starwars was the first movie I can remember watching at a theater. That is not because in 78 I was still young, but in 80 I was 6 or 7, the movie was such a hit it stayed in some theaters for years after, it moved the paradigm of movie making especially scifi so much that it made many theatre runs before empire came out, which was insane. The first thing is the CGI characters in the newer movies, they are terrible, one dimensional looking. The original puppets and costume aliens and droids were actually tangible things the actors played off of, not a ball on a stick in front of blue screen acting like something is there. They take the liberty of using cgi in everything making it look cheap and fake to someone who grew up with the real thing, not a photo copied lazy impression. I know if you grew up watching phantom that you love jarjar but the character is so cartoonish it really is annoying to the original canon trilogy. The miniatures replaced by cgi also was a huge mistake. And that's what most starwars fans that grew up in my era think

What I didn’t like about the prequel series was there were no real stakes. When the clone wars were referred to in a new hope I always thought it was clones vs. every one else, not clones vs. droids. No real stakes you loose an army clone or build more. Only made to allow children to watch, no blood no loss.

Honestly she is said to have saved the original Star Wars by making sure to correct the movie's pace. People, including great and well known directors, told Lucas that the movie didn't make sens and was way too long at times and that it needed to be more balanced.....And honestly, Star Wars (A New Hope)'s cut that made it into the cinema is perfect. (The score also completes it perfectly). There are moments when characters just talk, but the information we are receiving is essential, it sets the tone, it's clear, it's concise and it is easy to understand..Can we truly say the same thing about the prequels?

I was 10 when The Phantom Menace released in theaters. I can comfortably say that I grew up with the Prequels. Maybe not to the degree that some people did, but I was a barely into my preteen years when it dropped. *They weren't very good.* There. I loved them at the time, of course, when I was easily impressed and just wanted to see lasers, sword fights, and spaceships. But, as I grew older, I began to appreciate the subtleties of the Original Trilogy; their dialogue, the love and attention to detail that went into their special effects, their storytelling. By the time Revenge of the Sith released, I had begun to notice the cracks in the OT, and that they had been crafted with great care in a way that the Prequels just weren't. Now, none of this is to say that I hate the Prequels. On the contrary, ever since my early twenties, I've maintained that the Prequels had vision behind them, they just sucked in execution. Clunky dialogue, tons of exposition, special effects that weren't really "great" until ROTS, some questionable casting choices, etc. I've grown to understand that a lot of this is down to the fact that George Lucas is better as a visionary and a storyteller, than an actual director. He's an artist, but you need something of an engineer too in order to put a movie together and have it work properly. The other thing is that the Prequels were much more massive in their ambitions, compared to the OT. With the OT it was easy. Father, son, old masters, old conflict, empire of evil baddies, rag-tag group of heroes resisting them, hero's journey, bake and done. The Prequels not only had to tell Anakin's story, however, they also had to set up all the backstory that led up to them. The Prequels had a colossal amount of world-building and prologueing to set up the Jedi, the Sith, the Republic, all the major characters who drove the events, etc. You couldn't just step into Luke-s farmboy shoes and be whisked away on an adventure like in the OT, because the truth is, Anakin's story starts WAAAAYYY before he does. Wheels are already turning by the time we even get to Anakin, and they continue turning in the background while we go with Anakin on his own journey. The Prequels had something of an impossible task set up before them, and the lack of refinement of the material on the part of the editors and producers led to far too much being crammed far too clumsily into far too little time. All that being said, again, the Prequels at least had a story to tell. That's more than could ever be said for the Sequels. Between having no real gameplan or endgame in mind, Disney's NEED for new films to be cranked out like cookies, and a bunch of untalented people putting it all together, there's nothing to see. There is no story, no vision, and no future for them. The Prequels aged well with people because they still had those things at heart. Even if they themselves were badly put together, the characters were still interesting, there was still a great over-arching story, and there was still a uniting vision behind what was happening. The Sequels had none of that. They were trash when they were released and they'll be trash thirty years from now. Don't wait for a fan renaissance to save it.

I'm a fan of the prequels too and feel like im part of the very few who don't hate Jar Jar. I watched a ton of disney cartoons and Jar Jar reminds me of Launchpad McQuack from DuckTales: essentially a goof that apart of the Hero's team that adds an unexpected element into everyones predictable tactics, still finds a way to contribute to the mission even when they fail 99% of the time. So this made me more tolerant of his character then most.

I'm sure most kids like the sequels today. The issue with adults who are more aware of the big picture is the various inconsistencies within it. Or atleast as you said each trilogy's ability to stand on its own in some big way. Star wars wasn't able to balance growth and continuity very gracefully. Its "rich ground" for storytelling is a blessing and a curse because although there are endless opportunities, it's a lot of expectation to live up to. It seems like real life prevented the original magic to continue.

I think we should have an official consensus on this topic. The prequels tell a great story that builds the legacy and potential of Star Wars even further. The directing during filming was poor but I feel that it’s made up for by the legendary moments. The duel of fates. The battle of geonosis. The majority of the third movie. And all of the lightsaber duels that were absurdly well choreographed. No they’re not perfect movies. But neither was the original trilogy. They both tell their stories but they do it in different ways. One is a more dramatic classic telling of a story. The other a more action packed and flaunting film. But they’re both great for what they are. And the majority of people who don’t like the prequels wanted them to be the exact same type of story tellings as the OT
