The actor famous for starring as a Jedi confronting his father in a galaxy far, far away, is now playing the father of Bert Kreischer, a comedian in trouble with the Russian mob, in the comedy "The Machine." Correspondent Tracy Smith sits down with Hamill to talk about being launched into the stratosphere with "Star Wars"; putting fame in perspective; and being a voice of hope to the people of Ukraine.

@@rumblefish9 It was always the intention, even back when Lucas only vaguely imagined a sequel trilogy decades ago, that an old Luke would return like Alec Guinness in the original film and hand down the legacy to a new generation. You sound like a kid who has only seen the prequels saying Luke steals Obi-Wan Kenobi's legacy in A New Hope.

not just your life mate, but mine also. I was 8 back in 77 when i first Star Wars in the ABC Cinema in Walsall West Midlands, it was a saturday afternoon, i think it cost like 20 pence or 30 pence back then. I was that blown away i ran back outside and got back in the queue to watch it again. That film created what would later become my moral and ethical compass in life. I`de love the chance to shake Mark Hamill`s hand and say `Thank you`, it truly was a magical time in cinema history.

It is one of the most important scenes in the whole Star Wars series. I wonder if the movie would've been as successful without it. It's the first scene in the movie that really tells you the movie wants to be taken seriously, and not just be a comedic adventure romp. The tone established there may have been what inspired them to do the late script change of killing Obi-Wan, and then having him speak to Luke in the afterlife during the final battle. I think the original script just had Obi-Wan speaking on the communicator to him from the Rebel base. Also, that tone seems to be what The Empire Strikes Back leaned into heavily. They had the benefit of seeing how well the scene worked in the final film by that time.

My Mom died in the summer of 2020. Later in the year I was watching the end of the second season of the Mandalorian, when suddenly I saw an appearance by, unspoiled to me, a younger (CGI'd) Luke Skywalker. And I cried like a baby, in a good way. It was like a surprise visit from an old friend, something happy to help me a little with my grief. That's the power of that character, and I'm glad that Mark seems to understand that kind of reaction from people.

Your words hit me hard in the chest. My Mom passed away around the same time as yours, and ever since, in both TV shows and film, even music… there are certain scenes or moments where I have this overwhelmingly emotional reaction. I always have a flicker of thought as to why i feel it, but I think I try so hard to constantly repress the sadness and woe and grief to the point that the true reason I feel something in that moment is almost confusing to me. Almost embarrassing because I think I should be stronger than it, I should be a rock because everyone goes through loss on that scale in one way or another. I felt the same thing when Luke showed up. I was embarrassed, watching it with my wife who had never really been a Star Wars fan, and letting out a whimper trying to stifle back tears and being so conflicted as to why I was embarrassed to begin with, or why I held back my feelings. Im sorry to ramble. You aren’t alone in your loss. And with how cold and distant the world seems lately, it’s nice to know that I am not alone in my feelings sometimes. I hope you find peace and longer stretches of comfort as time passes. I know that time passing and reflection of the good times, what I can share with my own little family, are the only bandages on a wound that will sit heavy forever.

I got to meet Mark Hamill at a meet and greet in Cincinnati many years ago. He was getting blasted by Star Wars fans, and even my favorite character from him is Luke. I couldn't help but not mention Star Wars and instead talked to him about voicing the Joker. I had brought my 1999 Master Replica Luke lightsaber with me so he could sign it. I didn't bring it to the counter because I didn't want to be another Star Wars nerd like 95% of the others. However, he seen the lightsaber when I got it back from my parents and he stopped me. Told me to bring it over and he'll sign it without me even asking about it and even put "May the force be with you" on it. My little kid eyes swelled up, I started to cry, and he gave me a hug. He such a nice man and is willing to notice his fans much more than 99% of other Hollywood celebrities.

He was driving on an LA freeway and almost missed an exit off ramp and lost control of his Ford Mustang. The scene where Luke Skywalker gets attacked by the ice planet Hoth snow creature in Empire Strikes Back George Lucas thought that would be a great way to explain why he got the scar.

BTW he was on the Pilot of "Eight is Enough" when Star Wars became a hit, he tried to get out of the show. They wouldn't let him out. But then he got into a car accident which almost killed him and they had to recast the role of DAVID. He's in the pilot episode and I think he would have been good on that show if he stuck with it,

Unfortunately the car accident did extensive damage to his face, which may have affected his ability to get leading man roles. If you notice his facial features up to the first Star Wars, he closely resembled another actor who ten years later would rise to fame and become the biggest A-Lister in history. Yes, I think Mark Hamill could have been Tom Cruise before Tom Cruise became Tom Cruise.😮

I always watch CBS Sunday morning. Don't know how I missed this! I must have been asleep. Being one of those people that was there in 1977 at a hometown theater (and still a Mark Hamill fan) this was so special to me. Thank you so much for the interview!!

I got him to sign my Return of the Jedi VHS cover decades ago. I still have it in a frame. We share the same first name, and he wrote "From one Mark to another". Very, very great, down to earth, extremely nice guy.

It's not just Luke. They touched on this, but he'll be remembered as the Joker, too. As many wonderful performances as the Joker as we've had, when I read Batman comics, which I still like to do in early middle age, it's Hamill's voice that I hear when I read the Joker's dialogue. (And, on a related note, it's Kevin Conroy's voice I hear when it's Batman/Bruce Wayne dialogue.)

Mark Hamill is an icon of the entertainment industry, which makes it all the more shocking that this report completely misstated his latest on-screen appearance as Luke Skywalker. You could be forgiven for essentially ignoring his de-aged appearances in a 2020 episode of "The Mandalorian" and a 2022 episode of "The Book of Boba Fett," but he directly reprised his role in 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker."

Thank you, Mark, for giving us so much great work over the years, in Star Wars and in many other things. Star Wars will always be ready for you to return, don't you worry! I totally respect your feelings if you believe that you're done in the role of Luke, but hearing one day that you're back to reprise him again would bring a smile to my face any day.

I wish they would make a movie where Mark plays old Hedi master Skywalker telling younglings storues of his adventures as a young jedi knight, and Sebastian Stan could be young Luke. A great story where he faces great danger and an dangerous foe and the battle ends on a cliffhanger where the foe disappears, only to emerge in the present where Marks Luke has to finish the fight. Pleeaaaaase Disney!! Give us this before Mark is just to old.

Wish this interview could of been longer. Always a delight to hear Mark Hamill discuss Star Wars and his career, hearing his honest opinions and critiques. George Lucas’ story of hope and redemption will always resonate with people, and Mark Hamill’s portrayal of Luke Skywalker is an integral part of that story. Just a shame that George Lucas relinquished control of his creation. Mark Hamill, and Luke Skywalker, deserved better from the sequels. Shame on you Disney for what has been done to this once iconic franchise and Lucasfilm.
