These comics were also available in certain areas around military bases. My grandparents lived in Dover, NJ, just down the road from Picatinny Arsenal. And comics with the Mark Jeweler inserts could be picked up at stores and shops in Dover and Rockaway, NJ, as well as some of the other towns.

Correct. I grew up in Fayetteville, NC, right outside of Fort Bragg, and nearly every DC comic on the stands had a Mark Jewelers insert from around 1972-1982. After 1982, it was really only Marvel and Archie that would have the insert, and not as often as DC did in the past.

I was a kid overseas buying comics in the late 80s. The exchanges on base overseas sold comics, but not every comic came with a Mark Jeweler. They were all in newsstand. But stateside not all exchanges carried comics.

I once bought a collection from a military person that had tons of books with MJ inserts. I did not know anything about them at the time (I figured all copies of those books had them) so I sold them without any premium. I wish I had them back right now since markets like this are really heating up.

"Military people like to get married", haha! You said it. My store was about 45 minutes from on of the larger military bases in the south and unlike my regular subscribers who came on their own for the most part, those guys always dragged their wives into the shop. Some of the women at least tried to share their hubby's enthusiasm for comics and all the rest, but most just had a bored expression on their face and looked like they were just barely tolerating the whole experience!

What year did you have your store? Thats cool you had a store. I remember going into my home town comic store back in the early 90s, then the comic boom happened and they were able to upgrade to a bigger place. It stuck around until about the early 2000's

@@ComicBookInvestments I bought out the LCS in 1993, just as the "Death of Superman" boom was collapsing all around us! We survived, and I upgraded to a new shop in 1994, and eventually sold the new-comic half of the shop to my manager in 2009. He is still going strong 12 years later and I'm just dealing with back issues and old toys now. Somewhat like in your case, my dad was huge into comics, owned Superman #1, Whiz Comics #1, etc. when he was a kid. He got me into it strong when I was 7 and I got my first comic shop job at age 12. I also had a short stint working for Sparkle City Comics as an artist and behind-the-table young punk in the late 70s... But I digress! 😂

Seems like these have went nuclear since this video. Specifically in 9.8. Wouldn’t mind an updated video if you’re willing. Like Hulk 340 went from 2k (2020) to 15k (2023). Seems like 9.8 might be the ones that are true unicorns. For Hulk 340 the best I can tell there are 2 9.8’s with the insert. When it’s that rare it’s what is someone willing to pay.

MJ variants are always cool to find! You can also look for a star stamp on the cover, it's not 100% of the time the insert is there, but it's something else to look out for when looking for MJs.

In my opinion, I think it’s just that new mutants is like the hottest book right now and cheaper than a hulk 181 or spidey 129 so anyone looking at them would try to find what is more rare and spend more on it compared to its non mj copy. But yeah just not enough data right?! I mean I feel like that should speak to their rarity and yeah only grails or keys would have the most appreciation in value any random book nobody would really care as much. Anyhow Thanks for making this vid!
@ComicBookInvestments
@ComicBookInvestments 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s around 5% of books had the insert. So pretty rare. But rare does not mean more valuable. There just isn’t much demand for a MJ insert. So people won’t really pay much more for it

Do love jeweler books, however it is a niche market. I wouldn’t pay much of a premium for the books, because of that. I always enjoyed them, but I don’t think there are many people out there that think that they add much worth to a book

@nunyabizwacks6711
@nunyabizwacks6711 2 жыл бұрын
i believe the more recent ones are more commanding of a premium because kinda like regular newsstand comics, they seem to wane in numbers as the years went on. Also, although we know how much condition matters in the value of a comic, the condition factor is HUGE on these. Its very hard to find these in great shape. When you get into the NM ranges of grades for these, they most def command a premium, even on non keys. Plus, no sales numbers a person could possibly find on these hold almost any weight whatsoever because there is simply not enough of a sample size of recorded sales on these. Ppl are still really sleeping on these but they are rare af. Way more rare than just regular newsstand comics. Id say about 88-92 or whenever they stopped doing them is the sweet spot for them
@davidsamuelson2089
@davidsamuelson2089 3 жыл бұрын
The Jeweler books, or the national diamond insert books, really only make a difference if they are on key books regardless. Even then, the Jeweler books are more of a niche market.

True, for me personally if it was a random ish I might pay $5-10 more tops just to have a cool older book with the insert (like 70s era not 80s or newer). Even on a key issue you gotta find the right guy
