I should be more of a Dire Straits fan than I am. I had a double comp album of theirs and loved every track. I should just listen to each of the albums now. And 'Brothers in Arms' is one of my favorite songs. On the other hand, I haven't been grabbed by much of his solo work. I like the music he did for 'Local Hero,' and 'Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes' is superb, but otherwise I have found his solo music understated, shall we say, and he seems to have disappeared down a rabbit hole of 'pure' Southern music played in pubs in Northern England. Oh, and my wife has seen a video of him playing with his parrot on lead vocals, and the parrot, frankly, is somewhat in the Florence Foster Jenkins or Harry Chapin's Mr. Tanner camp - not up to contemporary professional standards. But I really like this new album. I listened to it once and immediately listened to it again. The 'One Deep River,' I would guess is the Tyne, as I think the bridge on the front cover is in Newcastle. So, he is tapping his British roots again now and that certainly works for me. Although I much prefer deep tracks to poppy ones, I have found most of his solo work to be so deep as to be barely discernible, but the songs on 'One Deep River' are just right.

Good walkthrough, the non-commercial aspect of his work is spot-on. Not sure what the excessive flashings of the album cover achieves

I agree with your review of “One Deep River,” which I’ve heard twice. If I’m in the mood for mellow Americana, it’s an album that will do the trick. Your use of the word “interchangeable” is perfect for describing his solo discography. He is, indeed, a very different kind of guitar player on Dire Straits albums - exciting and mostly diverse. Those albums feature my favorite version of him. When listening to Dire Straits, my mood is never a prerequisite for enjoyment.

Hi Mate On the money with your review. I got the album when it came out as have started expand my collection of his music. His skill as a clever lyricist is often overlooked, due to his stunning guitar playing. He never "over play's" on his work ( I think a lot of us wouldn't mind if he did) just what's needed. His phrasing is right up there with David Gilmour and many other great players. His albums are cracking Sunday morning listens.

( I wonder if he ever met John Prine) I have been listening to piano covers of Dire Straits. Alan Ckark , you realize what beautiful music Mark wrote. I love Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, so many more. Mark's solos, Silver Eagle, Last Exit to Brooklyn. Mark's music comforts me since my husband died. God Bless him

Great review! I love Knopfler, my favourite (solo) song of his is Why Aye Man, mainly because of the subject matter.

I'm a big fan of MK and DS. Love Over Gold is one of my all-time favourite albums. Haven't listened to the new album yet. It sounds good.

I'm a moderate Mark Knopfler fan. I only have two albums by him, Neck and Neck with Chet Atkins and Sailing To Philadelphia (What It Is is my favorite song of his.) I saw him once as a solo artist opening up for Bob Dylan in 2012 and he was great. If I ever see One Deep River used on CD, I'll probably get it.

I didn't realize he had such an extensive discography as a solo artist. Dire Straits were one of our main Bands when we were Teens-Along with the Police. Cool Video

Need more Knopfler in my collection, when I'm at the thrift or used music stores I usually pick up the ones that I don't have. I also need some more Dire Straits in my collection, I have a few comps, the 1st, Brothers, and the Live at the BBC cds. Might just get the remastered box set with all six studio albums.

From what I have heard, it's a nice album. I guess you didn't get the Super deluxe edition Blu Ray version . If you are trying to relax, you need some Enya🤣😂. I guess you saw the first big fall holiday announcement..... Bob Dylan and the Band live in 1974. It's only 27 discs......The Band songs aren't on the set, but it looks great. That's a lot of listening.

Please don't ban me!!! I have never been a Knopfler fan because, way back (dare I say it) I just felt he made too many mistakes. Sorry. I figured anyone can get it right in the studio with enough takes. Nor have I ever been a fan of the Dylan/Knopfler/Dave Cousins style of singing (Crest of a Knave is way down on my Tull list despite Budapest) BUT (whew, there is a but), one thing I loved about Dire Straits was Terry Williams. I was delighted when I found out he was the drummer of this new band that hit the radio in '78, because, as you know, he was the drummer in Man, and Man were, and still are (even though they were Welsh - lol) one of my favourite bands of the first half of the seventies, particularly live. So I was really pleased that the hard work finally paid off for Terry. Incidentally, Son of Man, their kids, have toured in recent years to good reviews, though I haven't seen them. May I still comment??

Not knowing, anything really, about his solo career I of course found this very interesting. …but I may still be more likely to buy a David Knopfler album firsh (I have some in my wishlist) 😊

Hi Alan - Mark Knopfler eh. Well I have lots of Dire Straits, and his solo stuff. To me his music is all of a similar pace, he does this mumbling shuffle, nice guitar, but what I do find is that on a lot of his stuff, particularly the Celtic stuff I always have the feeling that I've heard the melody before !! and lets face it with Celtic music there's every chance of that. Am not all in a Knopfler, he's a fine guitar player, but the music feels samey and too slow, and you cant hear the lyrics that well. For once I understand why he hasnt broken through in America, he just doesnt appeal to the masses at all. I guess he's at a stage where he can put out what he wants and not give a shit - similar Neil Young. Am a big fan but its quantity over quality for me - and has been for a looooooong looooong time !! Just a shame the cd comes in a cheap cardboard sleeve.not a standard plastic jewel the case wont last long even if looked after
