Great mark-making collection, Betty. Thanks so much for sharing, bc this is the video I needed tonight. I have an organizer wallet of Reeves watercolor pencils, Koh-I-Noor Magic (mixed colors in each pencil) colored pencils, china markers, charcoal and graphite pencils. My zipper bag holds Prismacolor singles. Then in my tool boxes are brush markers, water brushes, Tulip fabric paints, Liquitex acrylics and Daler Rowney acrylics. What I love best is just laying everything out and playing. I have made value charts in the past, but never a smudge chart. Great idea! Namaste'. 💖

I've been using the Maribou crayons for about a year now. I get some beautiful colors blending them with my fingers on my canvases. There is also a clear blending crayon that makes the color move even more. They are completely dry after about 5 hours. They are my favorite because, as you said, they feel like butter. The colors are wonderful-I think I have them all. Thanks.

I really enjoy this kind of video, learning about some supplies and how they work. I just got some similar to those Marabu Art Crayons at Winners/HomeSense in Canada (I think they're owned by the TJMaxx people and in the last year or two they've started selling art supplies by MontMartre, an Australian brand, at great prices compared to, say, Michaels). The ones I got are shimmery metallics and they are called "Twistables Metallics." Very creamy. I tested them just on black and kraft paper and they are gorgeous.

This is a great reference for swatches of the tools. I’d like to learn more about the purpose of “mark making” and how to incorporate it into a painting. I know you loosen up with scribbling, which is so fun. But is there more to it than that? Do you think there’s a place for it in non-abstract pieces?
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jane! Good question. I have always loved mark making...and lines in nature, downtown buildings, etc. It's something I'm very drawn to so I have incorporated it into my artwork. I start with very loose marks in the beginning and middle stages, but I'm more intentional on the final layer. I would suggest that you try it in your non-abstract art and see how it looks/feels to you.

This is very helpful, thank you. My question relates to, many of these tools i have tried, and don’t layer on top of acrylic paint very well. How and which to layer within or on top of acrylic paint? Even on canvas they don’t lay down well. I see them at their bast on paper works.
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 2 жыл бұрын
It's true that they probably work best on paper. Canvas is fabric with too many nooks and crannies. I have no issues using any of these on top of my Nova Color paints (that dry matte). I have had issues with paints that dry with a shining finish. I wasn't able to make any marks on them. I immediately stopped using those paints!

Hi John, you can certainly use Crayola crayons. You'll find that the colors are not as intense. You can paint over them. On occasion, the paint won't cover completely (because it's wax). I love when that happens!

Thank you so much Betty ! for this video. QUESTION … anyone ? I want to paint messages over acrylic on linen canvas .. what would be my boldest non smudge option ? Thank you for any guidance 💓🦋🌷
@BettyFranksArt
@BettyFranksArt 4 ай бұрын
Good question! If it's covered in acrylics, I would say that it probably doesn't matter if it's linen. However, the paint you use will matter. Some paints with dry with a shinny finish. I find it very hard to make marks on top of those types of finishes. Nova Color Paints dry in a matte finish--easy to make marks over it. I can't think of a bold non-smudge option. Can you protect the marks so that they don't smudge? That will give you more options. Here's a link to a video on how I protect my marks and varnish my artwork: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLxxdsqDxsqWgZ8.html Hope you find it helpful! 💜

Oops, I forgot ask my questions. Are soft pastels the same as oil pastels? Do u ever use oil pastels?
@BettyFranksArt

I don't like to use oil pastels because they NEVER dry! These are not the same as oil pastels. These will get varnished and will not have an issue with drying.

@@terryhorowitz7076 oil sticks would dry though....eventually. Oil pastels won't though. However, there are varnishes created to fix them if you are curious.
