In 2009 Mark shocks everyone with the announcement that he'll go full time again for Hendrick Motorsports. All he wants to do is just win one more race, but he's about to do so much more than that in what has to be one of the best late-career resurgences in recent memory.

Mark Martin is an absolute legend. I'm really sad that he never not 5 championships. I'm sad that he just missed being the oldest winner in NASCAR history. He tried so much to win a championship in NASCAR against the best there is in the sport. Had he succeeded, he could've been the oldest winner, make Dale Sr. only have 5 championships, make Jimmie Johnson have 6 championships, and win only 40 times in his career with 5 championships, tying with Dale Sr. for 5 championships. It would be said by many that he is one of the greatest of all time, but he already was, and still is to this day. He came close to winning 5 champs in multiple generations of NASCAR. Truly one of the best racers NASCAR has had and may not have again.

“Mark simply had the misfortune of being one of the greatest drivers of all-time while competing against THE greatest drivers of all-time.” Just look at all the great NBA players around in the 1990s who never won championships because of Michael Jordan. Karl Malone. John Stockton. Reggie Miller. Patrick Ewing. Charles Barkley. To me, Mark Martin is like those guys - in his case, you don't need to reel off championship numbers to prove he's a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest to ever strap into a racecar. What would one championship even do for his legacy in the end? It almost wouldn't matter. And ultimately in the end, Mark never needed the validation that a Cup championship would've brought. He had the respect of fans, team owners and peers, and a win tally that spoke for itself. Job done. Well done on this series dude, an absolutely incredible effort making such great videos. I salute you. And hey, as a Jeff Burton fan my whole life, I can relate to some of your feels on this one xD

Mark Martin was the nicest. Heck my uncle can confirm that because he helped work on Mark's dirt car years ago. Carl Edwards will always be my guy, but if I was alive during the late 90s early 2000s, maybe I'd be a Mark Martin guy. But Carl and Mark did have something in common though. They were nice guys who typically raced clean and never got that illustrious championship, and they lost in heartbreaking ways. I wish we could see a Carl Edwards Apologetics Tour, but you were a Mark Martin fan first and foremost, and though you were a Cousin Carl fan, your heart might not be in it. I've learned a lot about Mark Martin through this series. His ups and downs, great seasons, and his history with part-time competition
@marklittle8805

I became a Mark Martin fan because I liked a guy who did things old school off the track and raced clean on it. No one was more fair on the track while still kicking people's metaphorical asses on it. This series you did brought back a lot of great memories even though they all involved pain. The way he owned Watkins Glen, the way he carried himself through all the setbacks, the screwing he got by NASCAR in the manifold business, getting beat by Gordon , Stewart and Earnhardt and finally at 50 Jimmie Johnson. That last one was one of the most incredible runs ever. To hear him today, you would never know the heartache. He still is a good guy who is humble and grounded ..great series man.

Not because he won everything, but because he married a seemingly endless knowledge of racing engineering with a real desire to race and win. The best there is, a champion in life and all those cliches are true. As a long time Dale Jarrett fan, I wish the 2000 Daytona 500 would have played out differently. However, Mark was a striver who got the most out of his equipment time in and time out. I pulled hard for Mark in the 2007 Daytona 500, the 2009 season, that 2012 season and the 2013 Michigan race when he ran out of fuel late and lost another one to Joey Logano. He is a champion, plain and simple for the struggles he endured and came back to compete. Awesome retrospective Slap!

As someone who never really rooted for Mark this series makes me wish I had. I never rooted against him he was just always Mark to me a good solid driver who won his share of races but looking back with the help of this series he was really a special driver and person. Amazing work here. Way to keep the legend alive because without a doubt Mark Martin is a legend.

Fantastic video! My first race was the 1994 Bud at the Glen when I was 8 years old. I picked Mark to be my favorite driver and I was a die-hard from that day on. He's a fantastic racer and an even better person. Thank you for immortalizing him in these videos.

I was at the race in Michigan where he almost got impaled in the 55. The relief when he climbed out of that car. 😮‍💨. He’s an absolute legend. So happy to see him doing well on social these days.

Just came across the 5 part series. And man this was well done. I can relate to you so much. I was born in 93. I absolutely love Mark Martin. Hell I still have a few things shirts of his that I wore when I was probably 5 years old. Watching the races every Sunday was a big family get together every single week. Even grew up with Earnhardt and Gordon fans in the house. I was the lone Mark Martin fan. This last video made me cry because of how much I love this man. Thank you for these videos. In my eyes Mark Martin will always be one of the greatest human beings ever.

This is a very well made video. I love me some Mark Martin because of what he overcame in the 80s. MM overcame everything. Tough as nails and a clean driver, smooth and he did it from the start by himself. I salute you MM. I still have an old Valvoline shirt from 1995.

Must say, I know this is old but ive watched this series 5-6 times now. It’s very easy to watch full of useless information, which I love. Just want to say thank you for making this. I liked mark martin as well but I grew up in Alaska, not exactly the hub of auto racing in fact it’s about as far from it as possible in America. But as my ex-girlfriend used to tell me. “Why do you like watching billboards make loops for 4 hours?” Should have known that relationship wouldn’t work.Thanks again for the entertainment.

It's weird to see the incident between Stewart and Martin early on in Smoke's career, considering how much Stewart admired and respected Martin. He credits Martin with being one of those key figureheads of the sport that taught him so much. And you'd see it later in his career when he asked him to fill in the 14 car.

I absolutely loved this video. I was a huge Mark Martin fan and was very sad to see him not win a championship. He was always a class act and had so much respect among his fellow drivers. I have had the honor of meeting mark a few times and he was always very humble and was very talkative and took time out of his day to get to talk to you and acted like you were a old friend. There will never be another Mark Martin type person in Nascar.

This was such an incredible series! Very well done! I know exactly how you felt. I bought a Mark Martin flag at Atlanta Motor Speedway in November 94 as an 8 year old boy. There is still pictures of me in front of Dads Voyager proudly holding my Mark Martin flag. Mark won that day, my first race I attended. I still have that flag the ole 94 Valvoline T-Bird. God what I'd do to have it autographed. Such great memories from this day and age. Thank you Slapshoes! And thank you Mark!

My first exposure to Mark Martin. I was at the pit gate waiting to get into the infield at what is now Jukasa Speedway. A step van with a race car in tow pulls up to the line of rigs. I had never heard of MM at the time. I was like wow, this team lets a teenager drive their rig. Later when I saw that kid get into the absolutely stunning ASA car and drive it like he stole it I was a MM fan.

Really enjoyed this series you did. Mark was one of my favorites, the only driver I liked more was His teammate Jeff Burton. I remained a Roush fan till those two were no longer there. I’ve been lucky to have met Mark on many occasions, and he was always the most grateful person I ever knew, with the exception of Jeff Burton.
