Mark Martin's "Hot Rod" Newell Coach: Huge Power Compound Turbo Cummins & Stories From The Road!

Mark Martin's retirement has no golf course included, just a Newell, his toolbox, and a few good friends. Ever Mark retired it has been pretty well known that he is a HUGE motorhome/rv guy. Mark loves his Newell Coach rigs and has one of these 45 foot long beasts custom built about every 3 years. Part of his process is taking it out to the guys at PDI in Utah for a crazy compound turbo setup and custom dyno tuning on the factory equipped Cummins X15 and Allison Transmission powerhouse. Mark often pushes the limits of what the manufacturers intended on doing with specific parts sometimes even making his own in an attempt to improve on something (or sometimes make it worse as he explains). We get the technical details straight from Jerad Whitwer (the owner of PDI) who happened to be at the Las Vegas race with Mark when we were there to film him driving JR51 before the race!

your old newell can easily make more power... had an old prevost non slide 35ooo lb.. 600horse easy to get .. power to weight 65000lbs just too heavy to be fast. but the old non slide rigs dont weigh much and can make big power relibly and stupid cheap to mod.. water meth and timing allow a ton more fuel.. modern turbo.. now drive 32ft county coach non slide 8.3 p pump cummins... by far best driving rig ever had and ive had busses monacos a beaver a newell.. 30k gr.. weighs 21k with 610 hp 2000 lbs tourq.. every time i drive it blows my mind... alisons have touqe converters in 1st n 2nd .. hit 3rd can lite tires, injection timing and meth never hit above 11500 egt... 15 mpg... aint no newell but nothing drives as well

Another EXCELLENT video presented by Mitchell Stapleton, you have one lucky life to be rubbing elbows with stockcar racing royalty, I live about 40 minutes from Springfield Missouri and the legend of the old race track at the fairgrounds has always intrigued me. Ask Mark about Larry Phillips and his influence on Mark way back in the day. I absolutely LOVE hearing racing stories about the racing in Springfield with Rusty Wallace, the Roper family, Mark, Larry, and everyone else who etched their names at that famous piece of history that NEVER should have been eliminated.

So when I was a kid, my dad worked on RVs. By the time I was 10 I knew more than anything I didn't want to work on them. We live close to table rock lake, and there are many places you can get into trouble just trying to move them around. I can appreciate nice equipment, it's just not for me. Will still give ya a thumbs up, and comment for the algorithm, can't wait to see the Monte, or ol blue, or uncle Rob, or the suburban, whatever comes up next will surely be entertaining.

Twin turbos, a couple hundred horsepower more than a already standard jacked engine. And the whole engine/ compartment is clean enough to eat off of.. And his roof and his components up there. For being one of the greats that retired, he sure as hell still acts young at heart. Dude still fit as a fiddle and if he wanted to, most likely could still go another handful years if he wanted. What would really cap his career is that elusive daytona 500 nightmare, he said if he ever decide to come back be it full time or selected races that's the one he wants so bad to win and would put the proper closing on his career,

Hey Mitchell and Logan. Another great video with Mark. Not at all surprised he works on his motor coach and collaborates with the engineers at Newell. He is no doubt extremely mechanically inclined with a vast knowledge on how things work after designing and building his own race cars as a teenager. I suspect he gave major input to Jack Roush and Steve Hmiel on how to build that 88 Stroh Light Thunderbird from the ground up and set it up to haul ass. Not surprising they were successful right out of the gate. It seems you've established a great rapport with him. That's way cool. You guys keep up the great work!

I own a trucking company and I did heavy haul. With 604hp at my rear wheels, in an open 8 configuration, I would normally have a set of duals spin in west Virginia up grades and I'd have to use the interlock, and that was at 164,000 lbs. I absolutely belive this setup would smoke tires up a mountain at full boost💪💪😎

Any grade with 600hp pulling 164,000lbs quickly makes the tractor feel like it’s powered by a 1.6l Toyota lol (source- daily dragging around a Wirtgen 250 mill on a 4 axle Trail King with a T800/garbage ISX 😂)

Ok. Having a hard time imagining anymore kewl directions y’all could take this channel. A lot here I can relate to, for having -95 Ram Cummins that I’ve tweaked a bit and pull a gooseneck with. So far, I’ve pulled the center out of two clutches and roached the transmission for cleaning out the input gear. But I can pull hills at my cruise speed. Torque management system is now limiting my GVW.😂

'I've been building a 37' 18.5K Class A with a 400 hp 5.9L Turbo 12 valve Cummins turning an Allison 1000, with a tuned stand alone TCM for that same reason. I flat tow a rock crawler 4X4, and go over the mountains a LOT! No slide outs to keep the weight down. With the Limited Slip rear diff geared for the highway it should be a HOOT to drive and I fully expect 13 to 14 mpg because of aerodynamics and HP/ torque..... Lighting up the tires is expected, that's why I had semi truck driveshafts made for it. In fact all the running gear started life in a Freightliner, so no lightweight Duramax stuff in it.

People who actually think diesel engined trucks can be replaced by electric trucks any time soon are living in a fantasy world. I remember like five years ago seeing driverless Tesla semi trucks being touted as almost ready for the road. The electric F150 pickup can barely tow a fairly light trailer 80 miles.
@sirmonkey1985
@sirmonkey1985 Жыл бұрын
they will for "last mile" deliveries.. for example companies like walmart which use a main distribution center in metro areas that have to deliver to each retail store. but long haul will likely be slowly replaced by hydrogen and diesel electric hybrid because it's way more efficient(trains have been using it since the 30's) over the next 20-25 years. the electric F-150 is nothing more than a marketing check box they had to fill.

That is a beautiful piece of equipment. I don’t miss lifting turbos into place on coaches. Mitchell, ask Mark if when he was trying to get it to handle better, if he tried removing the right rear spring (in the case of the Newell, air bag) like his Winchester ASA car. 😂.

I had a pdi manifold, charger, tuner, and damper on a series 60 in a Freightshaker I used to haul lumber in. Quality is outstanding and their numbers are accurate if not understated. Could pull Sam's gap fully loaded at 65. Hell the manifold alone dropped my egts 250°

@@Stapleton42 how does lexus lfa compare to msucle car boom tubes, and how about lexus lc500? both yamaha designed. issimi video on lfa and last part of albons video called toyotas biggest secret. freepiston engines, avadi engine, powering electric drive and batteries for a balance of ev and combustion for longevity and cheap ownership and emissions laws and lightweighting etc... maybe a nin batery version for a sport car? battery like packageability of such thing would allow weight distrubution and sound mods never heard before. connought doing more conventional but similarly unique stuff, with 2 liter v10 in a miata sized car, and a x20

Great video. That guy built MMs RV to a trophy winner. Mark, Do a burnout in that beast! Just haze the tires, I'll be impressed. Better yet, Race the Stapleton RV.
