Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell, Franklin & Bash) joins us this week to share why despite his multi decade long career in this industry he still maintains a glass half empty attitude after the countless times he’s been disappointed along the way. Mario was the only one who keot regular contact with Dustin post Saved by the Bell. I love Mark and seems like a a good dude, but him and the rest of the cast never gave a shit about him after the show.

It’s sad Dustin Diamond had such a rough life and made poor choices after SBTB. Before his diagnosis he was trying to make things right and he was a very talented individual. A huge part of the show was Screetch!!

As a kid in the late 80s/early 90s there was NO ONE that had a Neo Geo. Super expensive.

A buddy of mine had one... they were somewhat cheaper if sourced from Asia... and lucky for him, my buddy was half-Filipino with a lot of his mom's family living in Hong Kong and Singapore. Once a year his mom would go home for a month or so and she always came back with some rad smuggled import shit. He had the Neo-Geo, the Super Famicom (Japanese market SNES), tons of Asia region carts for both systems... We joked that he literally got Christmas in July every year, as his mom usually travelled over there in the summer months. Anyways, the Neo Geo was indeed pretty bad-ass... nothing else came close to arcade quality at home until a generation or two later.

You could probably have cast MPG as Slater, and Mario Lopez as Zack Morris, and you'd probably have turned out with a pretty good Slater and Zack Morris. But not too many other actors could have taken a part like Screech and accomplished what Dustin Diamond did with it.

Everyone deals with death differently. There are those who choose not to have dozens of goodbyes with everyone they met. They would just rather go peacefully & let the feelings of others fall where they may. I don't blame Dustin at all for wanting a very quit, serene departure.

i would like to think that seeing mark for a minute at that comic con gave dustin some peace, i know from experience how much resentment can affect not just your mental but also your physical health & dustin needed that small interaction more then mark paul did.

my friend's uncle had one. there was literally ONE time he allowed all the kids on the road to come in and play it, was like he brought the arcade to the home. That was the only time we ever saw and played it.

Yeah because the console itself was around $700 - $800 and a cartridge would average around $100 because it uses the actual arcade boards for a home console.

Yeah it was something you would only hear about or read about in magazines; and people would mention the prices and you would wonder what kind of kids could be that spoilt lol… another unicorn from that era.. the NEC. Does it ring a bell? It was kind of like a gameboy but in colour and the capacity of a mega drive or more.. I can’t remember but it was insane. Does it ring a bell?

Crazy. All the decades since saved by the bell, I never heard Gosselaar talk about Dustin Diamond like this until after Diamond passed away. While Diamond was alive, all you would hear about is how he was "polarizing". And all the sudden he gets nothing but flowers after he's dead. You see who people really are?

The producer was an ass to Dustin and because of that, I believe the rest of the cast ignored him. He said they weren't the best of friends and the rest of the cast basically hung out together leaving him by himself.

Mario Lopez was the only one that supported Dustin & paid a nice tribute to him after his death, plus Mark & everybody else was pissed at Dustin for the book he wrote.. so I don't believe a word that Mark says about Dustin.. it's just a very sad ending to Dustin, finds out he was blackballed from the Save by the Bell reboot, finds out he's gravely sick & dies weeks later! Sad beyond sad there, RIP Dustin

Well I've heard stories where Mark was kind of a jerk to Dustin when they sit the show and out of the whole cast Mario Lopez pretty much was the only one that was good to him.

I find it a little ironic that we have the tv version of an outcast with exaggerated characteristics who is treated as maybe a bit less, but still treated well overall. That contrasted with him as a real life outcast because of his differences and having to work long term in that environment. It seems pretty much like real high school or at least my experience I hope Mark Paul is being genuine, but I get the feeling he would be an excellent politician. At least it is good to be respectful regardless.

Maybe afterwards with his tell all but the cast admitted they all should have treated him better on set. He was the odd one out whe. They were shooting sbtb. Kids barely in middle school, voice cracking, dorky spaced out looking kid next to athletic (Mario Lopez was legit. Dude placed at states in California.) And stereotypical Hollywood ten heartthrub ( in JPG) Shit got to him and l think he never recovered after the franchise stopped filming

I would have been ok with the SBTB cast if they were actually HONEST. They did not click wih Dustin because of the age difference and his personality. They may have interacted with him but were not friends. They much clearly affected Dustin. His reality was not theirs, and skewed in certain aspects I’m sure of it. He did however live a harder and different life than the others due to his looks, personality and the negativity of his Screech character overshadowing his life, let’s face it. The rest of the cast had a right to be mad at what he said about them but don’t come once he passed acting like all was cool. I’d have more respect for MPG had he said he was a great actor, we may not have been friends but I am sorry that things turned out the way they did. That’s it. Not this we cool bs when clearly Dustin did not feel that way when growing up and MPG clearly had showed discontent and talking shit about Dustin when the book came out. I can’t stand when they do this PR bs just to maintain their image.

Let's not act like anyone knows the relationship. Just because someone dies, doesn't make them the saint. Dustin certainly had a colourful past and he clearly wasn't stable in his life. When you're growing up and trying to raise a family, Dustin isn't someone you may be the best person to have around. They don't all need to be best friends just because they were co-workers...

AMEN! I could not agree with you more. Apparently Dustin had some jealousy issues over the fact that he thought he was hired to be Zack’s sidekick, but instead because Mark Paul and Mario happened to be best friends in real life and it made sense for two most popular guys in school to be friends they made Zack and Slater best friends.

All he had to say is, We really weren't friends, just coworkers and I didn't appreciate some of the stuff he did as an adult, the book etc.... It's too bad he died so young, but for me, I did not like him, and that's that.

I disagree, as an ex addict. The feeling of abandonment is horrible. I struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and my old friends didn't like what I become. They then avoided me, blocked me when I just needed an old friend to talk to. I didn't choose to become like that and "friendship" means alot to me. I'm now over 11years sober woohoo 💪💪🙃🙃

I don’t blame them. He had said a lot of bad things about the cast. Diamond burned a lot of bridges in the early 2000’s, not just with the SBTB cast. He also allegedly scammed a bunch of people who donated money to “save his house.” But he did seem to try to make amends later in life.

In their defense regarding Lark, she struggled greatly with mental illness, and I'm sure still does. Its a double edged sword if she had a major relapse, so I can understand why. However they could have gotten on a phone and called Dustin, and put it all away. Its obvious that he was in desperate need of money, and if they hadn't turned their back on him, he may have had another shot to work through the ranks just like others have. And let's be honest, not all of what he said in the book was a lie. Mark Paul certainly bulked up quite fast for the college years...just sayin

As DD stated, it was the editors and publishing companies fault for rewording the book to make it the way it turned out. It always happens when writing books for anyone. There has to be so e sort of hatred or drama parts in books to have some sort of selling value. Even if it's all made up. Sure he said some things about the cast, but it was taken way out of proportion, and he had to clear it up the best he can.

I really hope Mark is being genuine and transparent here. And maybe part of it is after-the-fact reflection. But the general evidence suggests the only SBTB cast member who showed some degree of regular kindness to Dustin after the show was Mario Lopez. And, true, Dustin let that tell-all book get published based on the information he provided. But it seems pretty clear why he didn't tell you, Mark, based on the evidence. We live in a very self-focused society but community care goes far and it was obviously lacking. I hope you can find some peace and maybe your feelings on him were complicated. I don't know, I was not there.
