Too right! The main lifts have carryover to pretty much every sport played in public schools. Gaelic Football, hurling, soccer, rugby, boxing, basketball... the list is endless. Improving strength and conditioning is also a surprisingly attractive notion to those with no interest in competitive sport, because in strength training the only competition is yourself (unless you’re a powerlifter/Olympic weightlifter/bodybuilder). Then there’s the benefits to joint health, academic performance, aesthetics... The unfortunate reality is that most secondary schools don’t have the funding or equipment necessary for running 4-12 week strength and conditioning programmes for all their students. For now students across the country have to contend with whatever work their PE teacher tasks them with (usually a workout DVD or being given a 10-year-old football and getting told to “kick that around, lads”.)

Seeing as that the deadlift can be taught in all of 5 minutes by someone who knows his/her stuff, it's quite amazing to see so few people actually deadlifting with any proficiency. Also, I've never yet seen a trainer in a gym break down the movement like this or in any shape or form that comes close to teaching someone the deadlift. Yes, these knowledgeable people are out there, but I think they are rare. I had to learn the technique myself from watching videos like this online. I'm glad I did, because if I had trusted anyone in the gym, I'd probably be in a wheelchair by now. I have said this before somewhere, but I think the hip hinge and other basic movements should be taught in school. Of course, most schools being public, it surprises me none that nothing or very little of value is learned there. It would save billions of ... dollars if people learned how to pick up stuff safely.

And the ones who are around, charge more for their expertise than a young guy can afford. No disrespect towards them for that, they have expertise and gotta pay their bills and whatnot, but it’s yet another way capitalism is grotesquely inefficient. Young dudes have to waste a decade or two doing things wrong before they can scrape together a couple hundred bucks for a decent trainer in this shithole country. By then, they’re fat, have a bad back, need more coaching to fix all the ways modernity has ruined them. No one’s fucking anymore and it’s no wonder. Whereas, just imagine if they could go back in time, learn all this when they’re 16… once you know these lifts, it’s like riding a bike.

Chest is up but rips are neutral. PPL over extend their spine with ribs flared way up is not a good end range or mid shin position for finishing a heavy Deadlift. I didnt know this until I got into mid 400's. Spine should be neutral and chest should be "up" from lats activating. Get a experienced powerlifter to train you even if you think you know what your doing from a few videos. It helps a lot.

To be fair, Rip did compete in the '80's and possibly into the '90's. I think his deadlift topped out somewhere in the 660's at 220 bodyweight, which is pretty good, though not elite. He has lamented staying at 220, as he thinks he would have been more effective at 242. Note: this is what I recall from another video and my memory may not be entirely accurate.

You may be overthinking it. If you are sloppy fat, eat less. If you are a skinny bastard, eat more. Rip recommends continuing the novice linear progression as long as possible, which means eating to win, especially toward the end when you are starting to stall. After that it's no big deal to take 6-10 weeks to cut some body fat.

I have almost exactly the same leverages with this guy. Hence the starting position of my hips is MUCH higher than everyone else and I've found over the years that this prevents me from using legs. It's all lower back for me. Whenever I deadlift heavy I have crippling lower back pain for the rest of the week. Hence I have come to the conclusion that I'M JUST NOT BUILT FOR DEADLIFTING and completely done away with the exercise. I don't want a slipped disc at 28.
@startingstrength
@startingstrength 4 жыл бұрын
The height of your hips has nothing to do with the safety of the lift. There's nothing about deadlifts that would require someone to be "built" for them. Deadlifts are good for everybody. Post a form check in the FB group or on the forum and let someone help you.
@strawberryyogurt0
@strawberryyogurt0 4 жыл бұрын
@procu64 ... Why does it matter if you have the same exact leverage as the demonstrator? If you’re performing the deadlift and your lower back is taking a beating, you’re doing the lift wrong. Deadlift is first and foremost a leg exercise. Do the deadlift with leg drive, don’t pull with your back. You should look at the deadlift as a PUSH exercise, not a pull. Even in Rippetoe’s demonstration, there is not enough emphasis about the actual leg drive and actually using the legs to get the weight from starting to finish position. The deadlift needs to be seen and performed as primarily a leg exercise and NOT a lower back nor an upper back exercise. Even when Rippetoe says ‘push the floor away from the bar and drag the bar up your shins/legs’ If I were a complete newbie, I would think about pulling the barbell with my back when he says ‘drag the barbell up’ and that’s basically the problem. Don’t even think about drag the barbell up your legs. When you push/drive with your legs into the floor and continue to drive with your legs, the barbell will automatically drag up your legs passively. Yes, the deadlift works the UPPER back because your upper back/entire back is isometrically contracting to prevent the barbell from bending your spine. Not only do you have to isometrically contract your back, especially upper back, but also lats, and abs hard. Isometric contractions will work the isometrically contracted muscles. But to actually get the barbell to move from dead floor position to lockout finish position, it’s using the legs. Isometrically contracting/holding your upper torso muscles in static position is also key to preventing lower back stress during the deadlift. Do the deadlift with an empty bar and you should feel your leg muscles working for the entire duration of the movement. That should be the same feeling you get when doing weighted deadlifts. If you still can’t feel your legs working, try using a trapbar first to actually feel the legs working. You’re driving your legs into the floor for the entire duration of the lift. Anytime, the barbell leaves contact with your legs, you have a higher chance of stressing the lower back, especially when you’re bent over. Bend over in the deadlift position with an empty bar. Position the bar at various increments directly below your head, chest, abs, and then actually touching your shins. The further away the barbell is from your shins, the more you’ll feel your lower back stressed.

If you cannot get your back into extension at the bottom of the deadlift, you may need to start with rack pulls at an appropriate height. This dude has long femurs and short arms, his conventional looks almost like a romanian deadlift. He would be much stronger at sumo

Teaching Deadlift in Squat shoes, lost interest as soon as saw that. This guy teaches so much bullshit, been a world class power lifter as he was doesn’t make him a good teacher. Head is also in wrong starting position, it should be always neutral which means looking down about not straight ahead
