🇸🇳 Original Jollof Rice: • BEST West African Food...
🔔 Subscribe: bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe
TOUBA, SENEGAL - Today we’re in the city of Touba, Senegal, which is a sacred Islamic city and a cultural center of Senegal. Many followers of Islam make a pilgrimage to Touba and one of the well known foods to eat in Touba is Thiebou Yapp - a mountain of different meats piled onto a base of rice on a platter.
Today we’ve been invited to the home of Madame Mbakke, who is known throughout the community for her delicious Thiebou Yapp. She made the dish with whole chickens, doves, and mutton. All the meats were first fried and sautéed with peppers, onions, and seasonings. The rice was cooked along with the mutton and then combined in a colorful giant platter for lunch.
It was yet again, another outstanding Senegalese food meal in Senegal, West Africa!
Thank you to Pape Tatandiaye (Visit Senegal / papetatandiaye )

Alhamdulillah (All the praise be to ALLAH).. No matter where you go in the Muslim world, people are nice, hospitable and you feel like you belong to the community... The hospitality you see is unmatched... We learn this from our religion. When I see the hospitality of Muslims, it reminds me of the hospitality of great Ibraheem (pbuh)..love for the ummah from Bangladesh.

The Lady of the house' was so pretty and her yard area was nice and clean to the eye. Food looked amazing! I have only known my grandmother to cook rice in this same style and I always said it was truly the best rice. It really makes me think there was some remnants of African style of cooking that was passed down to her as a Black American. A lot of our diet and her cooking was more similar to Ghanian food it seemed. It's all very interesting to see how Italian, Spanish (from Africa at large), Puerto Rico, DR and Jamaica and Black ppl in the us have gotten the roots of their cooking from these countrie.

Mark, we Ethiopians also have the same tradition of communal eating out of one tray. I’m sure it is the same for Senegalese culture too. When you eat together you don’t let the food fall out of your mouth into the tray. That is a no no. You can put your other hand underneath to collect the excess food falling out of your right hand. The wife stopped eating if you noticed because it is unpleasing to let food fall out of your mouth into the same tray everyone is eating from.

I think thats coz she was done. The husband also was breaking meat for Mark with the same hands that he is eating rice with. Communial eating is in many cultures even Asian. But th plate is bit small

@@user-vt2ce2jc4r in most African countries/cultures, it's unpleasant and distasteful to eat with your mouth over the food when eating with others. They were nice to him because he's a foreigner.
