In 1970, Genesis was looking for a new drummer. It would be their fourth drummer in three years. Phil Collins, nineteen-years-old, showed up at the audition early. There were other drummers ahead of him, so he had a swim while listening to the other drummers audition. When it was finally his turn, he sat down at the drum kit with such confidence that Peter Gabriel, the singer, would say he knew right then and there that Collins was a great drummer. Collins killed the audition and would be their drummer for the next 25 years -- and would ultimately take over on lead vocals when Gabriel left the band. After a long tour in Canada, during which his marriage broke down, Phil Collins returned to an empty life. He was sad, angry, depressed and lonely. He had a home studio and put his all into writing and recording songs. This is one of the songs he wrote and recorded. Now, you oldies, like me, sit back and take a trip down memory lane. You youngsters who think you know what music is, prepare to have your socks blown off. It's 7 mins long, has a hell of a build up, 5 mins of intense, slow foreplay then POW, ORGASM. Sound up LOUD and Enjoy. The most amazing thing is that this song was recorded 40 yrs ago, in the 80's. This concert was in 2004, Phil was 54 yrs old. The old guy who looks like Santa is standing on the stage with his eyes closed is legendary bass guitarist, Leland Sklar. In addition to playing for Phil, Leland has worked with James Taylor, Carole King, Toto, and many other artists

@@MarkColeman121587 Not to diminish what brought Phil Collins to write it, but as a young person watching this, I feel like his words apply to so many important aspects of life. In any case where a person has been betrayed or wronged, whether that be a personal element like a relationship or a larger picture like war, racism, or taking advantage of the weak. Like... if something is wrong, it's wrong, and this song highlights accountability, I feel, in such a universal way.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Phil is quite the talent, and if it weren't for Peter Gabriel leaving the group, and Phil having to step up, we wouldn't have known his range, there was no autotune, that's his voice, and may have been accompanied by keyboard and guitar, but it was still his voice layered on top of all that. He's done that song in Disney's Tarzan. Genesis live, huh just like Rush, Heart, ACDC, no hiccups with speakers or mics, lighting, they always know where they should be, or want to be on stage. Saw Genesis live, and it was a SHOW, let me tell you, do please check out more Phil, more Genesis, Turn It On, Home by The Sea, parts 1 and 2, Abacab(tough, keyboard play amazing, little jazzy), and Phil, "Another Day in Paradise, Sussidio, Against All Odds(another movie theme,) so soft and beautiful, he does beautiful ballads,, beautiful, keep going enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌

@AW-yj6md 3 жыл бұрын
@@amandabooth6138 It's true, I mean it worked out all around for everyone, Peter I don't know maybe he felt he was being held back, I'm just guessing, someone made a little quelp about him coming out on stage when he was with Genesis dressed as a flower, like in a grade school play, I thought they were making a joke, might have been a comedian, and I didn't take it seriously until I saw old footage, they said Peter was kinda out there, but its heightened if you will imagination, he just saw the world, music in ways many before him did, Mozart, Little Richard, Prince. Even though his music is revered now, back then people probably thought he was weird, considering he wrote symphonies as a kid, people thought Einstein was weird, where's he coming up with all this wormhole, relativity stuff, lol. People look at Stephen King and wonder how does he come up with these strange stories, huh I'm still terrifyingly wondering where Clive Barker comes up with these horrors, but I really don't want to know, just praying he's human like the rest.of us, huh! True enough, was a good move for Peter, and Genesis, they both made their mark. Godspeed, Peace ✌

January 1981 Phil wrote, produced and performed this single in a very subdued UK environment with 'some' attention but not at the the level it's risen to today. The concert we're watching here was at the Palais Omnisports Paris Bercy, in June 2004. At the beginning he recalls a meeting with someone for whom he obviously has no respect (Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand. I've seen your face before, my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am. I was there and I saw what you did...saw it with my own two eyes (In his mirror). So you can wipe off that grin...I know where you been. It's all been a pack of lies.) He's referring, of course, to himself and not to some imaginary other. His lowest point in life (drowning) through his answered prayers for success (I can feel it comin' in the air tonight, oh Lord) to his eventual stardom (I've been waiting for this moment all my life) brought him here to share with you and me the one thing that we're all afraid of...failure vs success. The melody is haunting, the atmosphere follows suit, the lyrics touch all of our hearts and the climax is...well, you tell me!

Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel are the detention of 80’s and 90’s pop rock. Out of all the musical instruments to play while singing, drums is by far the hardest. Piano, guitar and others allow you to sync with the tune. Drums finds ways to chop the tune up. To have essentially 2 separate actions (singing and drumming) it’s like doing 2 completely different things at the same time.

I hope you can hear the bass because it's coming through really tinny. He doesn't block on KZfaq. So with all the reactions to this song it went to the #2 song streamed on iTunes.

Fantastic reaction! Phil’s natural voice is something to behold. Check out the live video of him singing Against All Odds (take a look at me now) at Live Aid. He was just asked to walk out between acts and play a song. He kills it.

The studio version is amazing, by the way. I wonder how many people nearly drove off the road because they heard it for the first time on their car radio and got bowled over when the beat dropped.

He was a drummer first from the 80s band Genesis then he became the lead singer, then went solo.

oh padiwan.....he was the original drummer for Genesis....when Peter (Gabriele) left he became their lead singer and drummer...than went on to do solo LP's....so that's why they love him stalking the stage till he finds the drums and busts it out....lol

When you add the fact that playing the drums and singing at the same time is next level difficult, it makes it more amazing. Playing drums makes your body jerk and ruins vocals. It's also physically taxing and you can run out of breath.
