$200 Tripod VS $1,400 Tripod! Landscape Photography Edition: A sturdy, portable and reliable tripod is one of the most important tools in a Landscape Photographers kit, but does expensive necessarily mean better? In this video, I compare a $200 BENRO Tripod and a $1,400 Really Right Stuff tripod to determine if cost really matters. Of course, the overall quality will be better with the $1,400 tripod, but does it warrant a cost of 7 times that of the $200 BENRO tripod...that remains to be seen!
Enjoy and let me know what you think!

After watching this video, I conclude that the more expensive tripod is worth a marginal amount of money more than the cheaper one. My tripod is 40 years old, weighs almost as much as me, and cost $2 at a garage sale. It is perfect.

I use a Sony A7Riii and mainly shoot landscape. My current tripod is the peak design travel tripod, mainly because I hike a lot and prefer to travel lightweight. But I'm in the market for something sturdier during road trips and cannot decide between the TVC 34L and the TVC-24L. Any thoughts?

Mark, though I have no experience with these two particular tripod brands, I have used Oben, MEFOTO, Promaster, and still have an old Gitzo Studio tripod for when I used large format. I recently came across a brand called ProMediaGear (Made in US), that appears to be quite good! I wonder if any of your subscribers have any experience with that brand? I also recommend the Acratech ball heads, especially for travel/hiking CF legs! Lightweight and super-sturdy! And BTW, I agree with many other posters who say that “Stability” should be the main criterion of any tripod. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

If you want portable RRS legs, you should have compared the TFC-14/TQC-14 to the Benro. The TVC is the midrange legs already of RRS. TFC-14/TQC-14 + the BH30. Also, when buying a tripod legs, don't you consider the stability the legs provides? It's the very reason why you want to use a tripod in the first place.
@MarkDenneyPhoto
@MarkDenneyPhoto 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! That's the beauty of the TVC line - midrange height without suffering portability. Considering the fully extended height of the TVC-24L, this is a VERY compact and portable tripod. Height and portability are the two areas I focus on the most when making a new tripod purchase and of course the extended leg to leg distance is critical to ensure a stable foundation. RRS is expensive, but you cant argue with the quality. I appreciate ya watching!

I have a Vanguard as well @Mike Dixon and I was shooting at the beach, got sand in the legs accidentally (me being new to tripods) and I am unable to take it apart because it wasn't designed with this in mind. Now I know for future tripods. I think being able to disassemble it is important if you are shooting at the beach or in sandy areas.

Mark ( & Mike Dixon) I have a Vanguard Abeo Plus 324AT which weighs six pounds, is rated to hold up to 26 pounds of equipment and stands 67 inches before you put a ball head on it. It is incredible, not just for the money, but having owned a slick, and a few velbons over the years, this one is super stable. Which model did you get Mike? I would rather carry the extra few pounds than go for a carbon fibre tripod that vibrates on the shoreline or in a stream any day. It is not just that it is superb 'for the money' but that it is superb REGARDLESS of price. It comes with three feet possibilities, a spike, the normal rubber, and, clip on snow shoes which distribute the weight at the end of each foot - sand or snow etc. To overcome the leg opening while carrying it, I have a velcro tie which goes around the ends of all three legs keeping the tripod closed, plus a velcro handle I got on ebay for a few dollars which fixes to one of the legs like a briefcase handle. When set on the centre of gravity, the leather handle makes carrying the tripod almost a pleasure. To conclude, I would rather have this tripod, and replace it if needed in a few years, than a tripod costing ten times as much, and needing replacement in a few years - period! Enjoyed the video, but a shame you didn't give a good Vanguard tripod a run for the money instead of the Benro.

Over 10 years ago I bought a Slik 340 travel tripod and ballhead for $125. I have used it heavily and hiked with it for literally hundreds of miles. It has been used at the ocean in wet sand and has suffered countless banging and drops while hiking. After 5 years, I had to replace the ballhead for $50. It weighs about 3#, will support about 15# and is only about 15" long. I do have to bend a bit to use it. Liveview with a tilt screen helps. I would not want to carry or try to travel with the RRS or Gitzo gear even if someone gave it to me for free.

I got the FEISOL Elite Tripod CT-3472LV with an ArcaSwiss PO ballhead for a total of $1100. I'm 6'5" tall, and I needed the height without having to extend the center column. It works incredibly well, and is extremely stable, even if you have to extend the center up 5" or so. It is bulky, but for the size, it is very light weight. I also have the MeFoto Globe Trotter, which is a well built tripod, but it does not have the stability or height for my frame, but it does travel well.

Hi Mark - how stable is that Benro? Being that it is flat I wonder about the stability when the legs are extended. Such a unique design. I went looking for one, but B&H no longer carries them. I found one on Amazon. I usually pack my tripod in my suitcase when flying. I like the idea of it being flat for both packing and for carrying on my backpack.

Hi, Victoria! I was actually just using this tripod last night shooting the Golden Gate Bridge. It was incredibly windy and I was wishing I had brought my Really Right Stuff tripod, but the Benro did ok. It's a great when the conditions are right, but if its really windy or if you're shooting where waves are hitting the tripod, I would recommend something with a bit wider stance. You're right though, the flat design sure makes it fantastic for travel!

Mark Denney Thanks for the reply Mark! I really don’t NEED another tripod, but the design really jumped out at me. The flat design might work well for some of the bags I use. Some tripods can be so awkward to carry attached to a bag. Tripods are sometimes like camera bags, none are perfect. Or at least that’s what I tell myself when I’m trying to justify another purchase! Because I have disabilities that mean that I can neither carry any kit more than a couple of yards, nor am I allowed to fly portability and weight are of no concern to to me. For me being solid and durable are the most important things, so my aluminium Manfrottos pro190 and pro055 are perfect...and cheap. Being disabled seems to be win win when it comes to tripods. A brilliant and objective video but one thing I do question is when you spoke about the footprint of the tripods and how wide apart the legs are, surely this has to relative to height? Definitely subscribed.
@MarkDenneyPhoto
@MarkDenneyPhoto 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing, Mark! And, you are correct - the distance between the legs is relative to the height. The distance I mentioned in the video is the separation between the legs when the RRS tripod is fully extended. The larger the area this covers the more stable the tripod should ultimately be.

You're most focused on Price, Portability, Overall Height, and Weight? My first concern with a tripod is stability - you know, the primary reason you use a tripod. I have many tripods range $300-$600 including Vanguard tripods. ALL of them are broken by just a kick from any adult person accidentally, who just walks around my tripods. I wasted more than $3,000 for tripods. So even an amateur, she needs a high-end tripod. If she lived a place without any body around her, she just needs a normal tripod.

Every photographer I've known that starts with a cheap tripod will eventually upgrade and spend more on the next one. I've known people that buy 3 or 4 of them and end up with the more expensive tripod and end up spending way more because of the tripods in between getting to that point. Sometimes you have to go that route but if you're going to get serious about photography and have the means, buy quality and buy once!

Great video! I find it funny that a lot of people are giving you flak for not talking about stability, when it's clear you won't not be reviewing it if it didn't make the basic stability cut. You can never please some people. For me my favorite setups are the Manfrotto MT055 legs + Vanguard TBH 300 head if I'm driving, Manfrotto BeFree Legs + 498 head with Arca Conversion if I'm flying, Manfrotto 209B Legs + 494 Head with Arca conversion if I'm walking. All three combinations support by heaviest setup which is a 5D3 + 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. My favorite of all three is the 209. So tiny, yet so strong! And very underrated! Give it a try, it will soon become your favorite table tripod.

LS-354C with German made precision FLM level base and FLM ball head (purchased separately.) IMO it is a tough combination to beat. It's not the cheapest but a strong value. Open box specials can save you money as well. For around $500 all in, it is pretty good deal considering what you are getting. FLM gear comes with a 10 year warranty. From the looks of it, they could have made it 100 year warranty- built like a tank. In the long run, this set up is the real bargain. I bought direct from FLM and he threw in some accessories worth about $50 for free. I could have easily got another package for ~$100-$200 less but I would probably be replacing most of it within a few years almost guaranteed. What they do is make very decent products but use very cheap levers and other plastic bits. Eventually you end up throwing it out. A good rule of thumb is to buy the very best you can afford which is also a good value. That is to say, don't buy the most expensive gear and certainly don't buy the cheapest. After a certain price point, the price/quality curve starts to flatten out. Somewhere in the middle is the way to go. Good gear can last a person for years.

Okay, and now using that thing every day, and we see what the difference is in ten years. I go for the expensive stuff, with good reviews. In The Netherlands we say: "Alle waar is naar zijn geld.". Meaning that you can not sit in the front row for a dime. Eventually it pays off. I see that with German products all the time. When you buy German, Swiss, Swedish or top brand USA products, you think, good grief, that price. Twenties years later, you think, mmm, per year, quite cheap.

There's really only one thing you have to consider when buying a tripod. Stability. That's a tripods job in life to hold your camera and telephoto zoom steady and solid on uneven ground in high winds. Buy the best you can afford that gives the best Stability. All the other criteria you mentioned is not so important. It's nice to have but not vital.

One of the things he didn't mention is that also to the price point on the really Right Stuff tripods allot of shooters use that tripod hunting and loading up so it's not just a tripod for photography but also for gunners as well. There's allot of parts you can add and strip down out in the field something that cheapo is not even close of handling. You do pay for what you get.

Is it worth 7X the price? Depends on what your expectations are. If you want a rock solid vice spend the money. The RRS is worth every penny if you want high precision, sturdiness, and precision. Get the RRS Anvil-30. This video was made before RRS came out with their S.O.A.R product line. I've been through 4 tripod and should have just spent the money of the RRS to being with. When I place a $20,000 camera system on a tripod, the last thing I need, is to try and glue everything back together, after it fell over, because of a broken $200 dollar tripod. The Really Right Stuff tripods, ( more than one ) is the brand I use. For the serious shooter, who needs a dependable strong, rugged and stable platform. Giving the users confidence, that it will hold his expensive gear, safely.

It's always shocking to me, ME included, that people pay all this insane money for gear including cameras, batteries, lenses, and the list goes on and on... only to buy a 80 dollar amazon special tripod. Like where is the logic in that? Or 15 dollars filters. The purpose of a tripod for stills is to do long exposures that come out sharp. What's the point in using a tripod in the first place if one cannot achieve this objective?

This is a unfair comparison. You should have chosen similar heights and features to compare price and quality. Apples vs VCRs is kinda useless.

Actually, the Benro is about the same height and has more features than the RRS.

That's why I got the benro. It fits inside the space for the handle of a carry on bag. (inside the bag) Just take off the ball head so it fits better.

Absolute unfair comparison, Benro C3780TN is the Tripod which can be compared with RRS tripod.

There is no comparison between "Benro" or "Really Right Stuff" or "Gitzo". I wouldn't even mention the "Benro" name together with products from high-end manufacturers. My $ 800.00 aluminium "Gitzo Studex Performance 3", that I purchased back in 1988 or 1989, is just as good today as it was 30 years ago. It was a lot of money for me, back in those days, but it was the best product I have ever purchased for my photography hobby. I wouldn't touch "Benro" wit a 10-foot pole. All of these high-end digital cameras will be almost worthless in 10 years or less, but a quality tripod will always be good. Most likely for the rest of your life. When it comes to the price, "Benro" wins? You want to save the money, don't buy a tripod than!

You miss out on a lot of important issues here. Stabiity of a tripod is worth it's weight in gold. Reliability is also very important. What good is a $200 tripod if you have to replace it every two years? Really Right Stuff has a variety of tripods with shorter legs and weigh less if that is important to you. For me, you can't be a Riess tripod

Every time a flight attendant asks me to check my bag, I look them dead in the eye and ask them, "Do you really want to be responsible for over $5000 in photography gear?". I usually get my bag stowed in the coat closet or am allowed to stuff it in the overhead bin after some unpacking.

You're comparing apples to oranges. should compare tripods in similar if not same class. closer comparison would be the RRS TQC-14 vs Benro Travel Flat. Or the Benro TMA48CXL vs RRS TVC-24L. Both these comparisons would be closer even tho still not in same class. To me price would then play a bigger factor in choice.

Looks like the RRS tripod is a larger, more substantial model than the Benro you used here. Maybe using the next larger Benro it would have come closer to the height and load capacity of the RSS? At just one sixth the price hopefully. First clue here was the need to use the center column of the Benro when it wasn't needed on the RRS. Not mentioned here is the hoops one has to jump through to buy anything from RRS. Did they demand any photo ID and credit card scans before they'd complete the sale? Did they take your money and then refuse to ship it because it suddenly went "out of stock"? Did they charge you a restocking fee when you cancelled the order after six months because you got tired of waiting for it to go back in stock? That is their standard business model.

Yours may have been a one-off case. I've purchased from RRS for many years, and never once did I have to jump through any hoops using a credit card or deal with piss-poor customer service treatment. Buying from their website couldn't be easier.

Seems like you are comparing orange with apple: one is a series one the other one is a series two, while one is aluminum and the other one is carbon fiber. It is more like comparing a say, a Corolla to a Mercedes S Class. It would serve your audience better if you could compare similar tripods of size and similar material.
