The counterfeiters are bringing their A game to the marketplace. They are getting better at trying to fool people and defrauding them of their money. This is a client's fake Gold Maple in a Fake NGC holder. The client purchased this from a very well known auction site. The seller took the money and ran, then closed his account. Reparations are currently in process and hopefully my client will be made whole and the seller gets what they deserve.

Regarding 7:13, the Thermo Scientific Niton XL2-800 XRF Metal Analyzer shows the composition of the Fake 2009 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin is primarily 42.42% Copper & 53.88% Silver. The fake coin weighs 17.1 grams which is 45% lighter than a real Gold Maple Leaf 1 troy oz. Coin. A real 1 troy oz. gold Maple Leaf measures 30 mm in diameter, 2.8 mm in thickness and 31.1 grams in weight.

Yes the sharp reeded edges of the real maple, where the width of the gold coin is squeezed into the dye and ‘leaks’ out of the dye. Tell tail of real gold. Ring test, weight, looks. Gold is hard to fake. Bars are different. Slabs make me nervous, I want to feel my gold, as most of us do.

The majority of people are not going to get caught out with these fake coins. If someone is selling a 1oz gold coin under price the alarm bells start ringing. I personally wouldn't buy a gold coin in a slab anyway, as I would be purchasing it for its bullion value and would want to handle the coin. I also only purchase gold coins from reputable companies, so don't purchase from individual sellers, on e-bay etc. How sickening to lay out cash for a 1oz gold coin and then find out its a fake 😣

3 things to measure for the average joe : 1) coin diameter (use digital calipers) 2) coin thickness (use digital calipers) 3) coin weight to at least 1 decimal place accuracy (use an accurate weighing scale with zero calibration) There are other things like a slide (magnetic) test, ping test...etc. But the above 3 are the minimum. Those 3 tests are very hard to pass for a 24k gold coin like maples, buffalos, philharmonics. SOME sophisticated 22K counterfeit coins can pass those 3 tests or so I've heard (?) Moral of the story is to opt to purchase 24K gold coins and do the above 3 tests.

Agreed. You need to audit your own precious metal upon purchase. Even if they look at you weird in the store. I recommend using calipers to measure, weigh it. Bring your own calibration weight to check their scales. Check the tone (ring) on the metal and have them put it on the XRF machine . If you cover all these bases you should be fine. Check the fine detail in the artwork. Flat out, don’t buy any bars! Coins only. IMO.

Any gold that comes in a holder I ask to take so I can feel it and compare. Only tungsten weighs the same as gold. When you have that a knife can be used to shave a piece off. Gold is soft tungsten is hard. Counterfeits that are larger than the genuine gold coins are obviously lesser dense metals. Counterfeits that are the same exact size and weight would only be made of tungsten. Tungsten would be used mainly on 1 oz or above coins and bars. Due to the high temperature of the melting point of tungsten sintering would be the preferred method.

Thanks for making this video. So first you checked the features of the coin and then you checked whether there’s any difference in weight between a genuine Maple Leaf and the fake one. As far as I’m concerned the difference in the features on the surfaces of the coins are difficult to see for a lay person, whereas checking a difference in weight is much easier to carry out. In what order would you advise a lay person to carry out these two checks?

Regarding the weight test; since the slab is also fake, it could also have a different weight than a genuine slab, couldn't it? The counterfeiter could add weight to the slab to counter the weight difference of the coin. Until grading services develop some kind of anti-counterfeiting technology on their slabs, it appears that the only way to tell for sure is with an XRF. This slab would have fooled me.

How does NGC not know if it’s counterfeit? Does that mean there’s a guy out there with the real one and now everyone will think it’s fake? Or there is no real one? In which case, NGC should know that a real one doesn’t exist!
@MarketHarmony
@MarketHarmony Жыл бұрын
The most probable explanation is that a real maple in a real NGC slab was first used to create this counterfeit. The counterfeiters used the details of the real one to recreate this fake one- incorporating the same grade and NGC coin number. The counterfeiters were attempting to add assurance by using the NGC system in their favor, so that a purchaser would assume authenticity based only on the verification of slab details matching up. NGC does now know that this coin is counterfeit; but would not have known unless verifications like that done in this video would have brought the truth to light.

Funny that we reached a point where it's a lot easier to counterfeit a slab'ed gold coin than a naked! Why? Because the slab robs you of theposibility to get the coin in your hands, measure it and do ping tests. Only a 100% copy in pure gold would pass all tests - not even a a gold plated tungsten. In the slab you can easily add weights too so not even the weight would be off! But scanning the barcode in the NGC app and comparing the picture it's clearly not identical. Coin is rotated. Difficult to get the details but not needed.

@good2goskee
@good2goskee 3 жыл бұрын
31.22 is within the normal range of Maple weight. My older maples seem to be slightly more weighty than the newer ones-many were 31.3g. Get a natural earth magnet. They are cheap, SUPER powerful, and can fit in your pocket. If there is any magnetic attraction on your GML, you have a dud. The mag test works well on silver and gold. If you have a GML as a collectible, then you got the wrong thing to collect because they are one of the most available gold coins in the world. As far as I'm concerned, if there was a minor scratch and the weight is 31.1 or more, don't worry about it. If the coin was sold to you as a collectible, then that is another issue. Good luck friend, God bless

@needsomehike the 2021 maple have great security features. Easiest way to check authenticity of your maple is to get a really strong magnifying glass and look at the laser etched small maple leaf at the 5 o’clock position. Since you have a 2021 coin, you should be able to see a “21” inside the laser etched maple under magnification. That’s a security verification/feature that your maple is genuine. Counterfeiters can’t replicate this. Alternatively, take your maple to a local coin dealer that is authorized by the Canadian Mint. They would have a DNA bullion machine to confirm authenticity of your coin, by comparing your coin to the mint’s online database. It’s a wonderful way to confirm authenticity. Unless you bought your maple as a numismatic coin, the scratches don’t matter too much. The only thing that matters is the purity of the coin. And it’s treated as just regular bullion. You might lose some value due to the scratches when you sell, but it wouldn’t be a significant loss.

This why I never buy coins in slabs. It throws off my feel for the coin. I can pick up a coin and instantly tell if its real or fake just from handling gold coins and becoming familiar with the weight and feel, and look they have. But a coin in the slab looses that sence of mass a gold coin has when you put it in the palm of your hand. I have been fooled a few times by counterfeit coins, but they were real gold counterfeit just made by a foreign country and used a slightly less karat. One was a British sovereign coin which im not very familiar with made from 20 karat instead of 22 karat that the real coins use. It still had value simply based on its gold content. But I have never been fooled by a fake made out of something other than gold. I believe once a person becomes familiar with handling gold on daily basis, it becomes very hard if almost impossible to fool them with some other metal. Gold is so dense that typically no other metal can replicate its dence mass with out increasing the size of the coin. Tungsten has a similar mass to gold, its the only metal that can replicate the density of gold, but its dull. It does not ping and ring like gold, instead it just thuds like a piece of lead. Thats why I hate these plastic cases, I always encourage people who are getting into collecting coins, to personally handle the coins, then you become familiar with its feel, weight, sound, and light reflection.

You can do that, but ONLY doing that will not give a definitive answer. A litany of tests must be used to reduce the possibilities of something being fake... the more confirmations that you do, the more confident you will be in authenticity. Just relying upon one test will not assure you of much. What if someone asks you if it is real? All you would be able to say is that the serial number is right. But if you did multiple tests, then you can confidently confirm authenticity... and make a deal happen with both parties being satisfied.

Kinda hard to "counterfeit" a non-currency non-legal tender (especially in the U.S. where foreign "currency" is WORTHLESS as far as being "money" and is ILLEGAL TO TRY TO "PASS" OR "PRESENT" AS ANYTHING BUT A "TOKEN") non-coin, isn't it? You said "based in Philadelphia". Where is your business incorporated and/or headquartered?

State laws do cover the counterfeiting of U.S. and foreign gold and silver, bars, nuggets et al! For example, see California Penal Code section 479

14 grams is 14 small paper clips. And you might want to check the "calibration" and "units" of your "scale" there since "customary U.S. units" and the "U.S. ounce" are NOT "troy measure" but "avoirdupois" and even though the "base unit" of the "grain" are identical, a "troy ounce" is 1/12 of a "troy pound" of 5400 grains while an avoirdupois/U.S. ounce is 1/16 of a U.S. pound of 7000 grains. Where exactly did that "counterfeit" come from? Clearly not "NGC" or the return address would and not getting back what you sent to be "graded" MIGHT be a clue its "counterfeit" OR they or YOU don't deserve such a great "rep" after all. Gotta be more to the "story"
Locals, beware: That gold you bought could be fake
