Two months after Hitler's death, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill paid a special visit to his Berlin bunker and the ruined Reich Chancellery, the only Allied political leader to do so. The experience made a lasting impression on Churchill. Find out the full story here...

If you think Stalin was bad, then it's weird to think Churchill was a better person. You watch these videos because you notice you learn something new, maybe changing your view a bit. Yet people are completely convinced Stalin was worse with what they have been told. Of course the West would say that about an enemy. Much to learn about Churchill and his political stances on the world. Nazi's wouldn't mind him in their party. Just look at the West now and their support of Israel. Their politics are still inhumane.

A late friend & senior associate of mine visited the bunker in July 1945. In the kitchen of the upper level bunker, he scooped up a handful of blackened silverware, knives, forks & teaspoons. Only later, at his billet did he discover the German eagle & letters "A.H" on the handles. He had them framed & on display in his Toronto office until his passing some two decades ago. He gifted me one of the many Iron Cross's he picked up from the floor of the Reich chancellery. Cost of admission to the bunker, a pack of smokes.

Cool! My buddy’s grandpa was in the German Army. He brought his camera to one of those big speeches in the 1930’s. He was on 20 or so rows from the speakers platform. He took a snap and my buddy had the black and white photo. His Grandpa defected and left before the things got going. He made his way to the US. He had a few items such as an officer’s hat a Nazi Naval flag. It had the Iron cross, not the swastika.

I have studied WWII and taught WWI at high school and university level all my young, and now, old (79) life. When I was 8 to 10 years old I lived in Salzburg, Austria (in the Schloss Klessheim-where Hitler met dignitaries, and the palace grounds was a great playground. We visiting Berchtesgaden (berghof and Eagles Nest ruins). I have a bomb-proof piece of Hitlers picture window and an army belt buckle I found running around. And my passion for history began when my father was a Lt in the 504 Regiment of the 82nd Airborne. My mother was a U.S. Army nurse who met my father who went to an Army hospital in Naples. They married and I was born 2 days after Nagasaki in Fort Bending, Georgia. Thank you Dr. Felton, never miss your documentaries.

Here's a story you've never heard, during the Battle of Iwo Jima my grand dad was cooking bacon when the Japanese charged and outflanked their position. Not wanting the Japanese to ruin his breakfast he ventured alone back behind enemy lines, picked up the pan of sizzling bacon, and under a hail of gunfire made it back to the American lines. He was awarded two purple hearts by the island was conquered in other incidents but the day he saved the bacon was his proudest moment in the war.

This is moving for me after visiting Churchills cabinet war rooms on the day off at the London visit in 1986 as a German pupil. I was the only one looking out for this historic place and was moved how Churchill managed the war in such humble rooms. I am thankful for his role in the war and liberating Europe from the nazis. Visiting Hitler's rooms just have given him time to reflect.

Churchill may have shown a measured and collected approach to his Berlin visit, but he also is known for having a brilliant sense of humour and his legendary razor sharp wit. In the 1950s one morning, Churchill's woken to be told: "I'm afraid there's been a bit of a scandal, Prime Minister, one of our back-bench MP's was found with a guardsman in St. James' Park in the bushes last night by the police and the papers have got a hold of it". Churchill replied (in his usual deep, gruff voice),.. "Last night?!" "Yes" "Very cold last night, wasn't it?" "Yes Sir, I believe it was one of the coldest February night's in 30 years!" "Makes you proud to be British!"

That reminds me of another Churchill anecdote. Upon being informed that Rudolf Hess had flown to Scotland, in the hope of Germany making a separate peace with Great Britain, Churchill ( who was on his way to the movies, or cinema) said, "Well, Hess or no Hess, I'm going to see the Marx Brothers!"

Well that's not right. The war ended in Europe/Britain on the 8 May 1945, but officially the 2 September 1945 (between Japan and the States) and voted out of office on the 5 July 1945 General Election, but vote counting was extended to 26 July. Let's be honest at home he wasn't very popular, contrary to historical narratives, he was a retrogressive aristocrat, who didn't have a clue on how the ordinary working man/soldier concerns. The country was weary, but ready for radical social change and they certainly got that with Clement Attlee, the best Labour prime minister ever.

But he was only the figurehead and spokesman of a government that was made up of the best members of all parties who agreed to put political differences aside to fight the war. The sort of image of Churchill standing alone with the British people arrayed behind him in defiance was very much promulgated after the war as the Churchill publicity machine cranked into action, much like Robert Falcon Scott's did a generation earlier, and Churchill was a brilliant self-publicist in his history of the war. That's not to downplay his contributions but there was an entire government, civil service and military organisation behind him and he would have been well briefed by staff before conferences.

And, like other people have mentioned, the lack of background music or distractions is really a blessing - the message just sinks in with more clarity and neutrality. having read somewhere, years ago that when he sat in Hitlers' chair Churchill said "I have tracked the nazi beast to his lair"; I was waiting eagerly for Mark to repeat that proclamation. Such is my regard for his historical accuracy that because he didn't include it I must now regard that quote as apocryphal.

Yes, did you know he was an art forger and also made money by digesting books and writing short synopsis of them for readers digest. He also left London whenever he knew the luftwaffe was coming, unlike Hitler who insisted on staying in Berlin

@Gmac86 Have you ever met a conspiracy theory you didn't like? "What precautions did Churchill take to stay out of harm’s way during dangerous situations? He didn’t take many. There are a lot of cases when an air raid was about to occur and Churchill would go to the roof and watch. This was how he was. He was not going to cower in a shelter during a raid. He wanted to see it. By day, he carried on as if there were no nightly air raids. This was part of his style, part of how he encouraged and emboldened the nation. If Churchill’s doing this, if he’s courageous enough, maybe we really don’t have so much to fear."

Churchill was at times a journalist, an army officer, and a historian (with a very definite belief in his own place in history). Although Truman had served in WWI, he was basically a career lawyer-politician. Different mindsets.

I've always admired Churchill. He was extremely adventurous and witnessed extreme changes in the world he started out in compared to the world he left. He participated in the cavalry charge at the battle of Omdurman, was taken prisoner in the war against the Boers, and witnessed a shootout in London between the police and some Latvian anarchists just to name a few things.

Thanks for this fascinating video. Today, on what is Memorial Day in the USA, as we honor our fighting men and women for all time, including my maternal grandfather who fell as a GI in Italy and my paternal grandfather who survived fighter under the waves as a cook/steward of the Silent Service in the Pacific, I am filled with utter and happy satisfaction that Sir Winston Churchill had the opportunity to walk around Hitler’s death bunker and poke his cane among the ashes of Hitler’s cremation ditch. Churchill gave the site all due consideration before abruptly turning away and walking off, which was not much. Perfect!

I had to look it up on a biography of Truman; he was waiting for A-Bomb tests results(successful or not successful) and didn’t get them until the evening of July 16th. Coupled with the fact he’d only been on the job a month, I think his mind was focused on something else.

It's a funny thing but at 71 now and not being religious at all, in fact almost an atheist lol. Having served ten years in the RAF (1970/80) Ground Crew, Churchill was always my personal hero. From War Comics to Historical Documentaries. I revered this man and still do. I know we needed America as they are so fond of reminding us frequently. I did in fact marry one lol. This was our Nation's Darkest Hour for sure however. I have always felt as though, despite my non religious view, he was exactly the right Character at exactly the right point in History to face an almost unearthly evil. There is a power we do not, as yet understand. I am grateful to you Dr Felton for showing us all yet more glimpses of something we are at this very moment in time, in danger of forgetting. For making the past come to life, even if only briefly. Thank you for the very best researched and unbiased material on the net.
