Congratulations on switching to non-alcoholic "cocktails." My husband and I did this too. We limit ourselves to enjoying one bottle of wine a month. We both feel better for this change. I totally believe in the "trick your brain" tactics used by Tina. It's helpful to create a little ritual with creating your non-alcoholic beverages

I am a project engineer who spends many weeks away at customer sites. Many people who travel for business eat rich food and drink alcohol every day. About 15 years ago I decided I would take care of myself when traveling. I do not eat rich food and only drink 1 -2 beers per week. I am on no medication and my weight is 170-175 Lbs at 5ft 10in. No bad for a 66 YO.

I just love when you talk about health issues, Guys. You have just hit the nail on the head with those "sins". Super common in retirements: drinking in particular. It is not just about calories, one drink a day doubles risks for breast and colon cancer. What I usually recommend: Walk for an hour at least before breakfast, practice intermittent fasting with NO snacking and stop drinking altogether: way too risky to turn into habit

To go along with the seven deadly sins one of the things that I struggle with in retirement is time management. I don't keep a regular bedtime, I'm up late, up early, and don't nap. When I was working I had a regular schedule even on the weekends. But since I'm retired things have slid down a little bit. I need to get back on a schedule of regular rest regular exercise, and regular meals at proper times. I noticed when I get to bed earlier I seem to get more accomplished the next day. Great show today!

Thanks Debbie, We do agree getting good sleep is so important to health, we are lucky we do have a routine and go to bed around 10:00pm. Maybe sketch out a rough schedule and try for one week, what doesn't work for you alter until it fits your life. Thanks so much for watching.

Bravo - well said! Norm and Tina retirement rock stars. Sugar and alcohol are two of the biggest poison's you can feed your body. I've cut out 90% of both in my retirement life and an MUCH happier for it. You'll find that less is sooo much more. Less food, less alcohol, less negative thinking and speaking - freeing yourself to look for the beauty in everything and everyone. Very liberating mentally and physically to be free of the daily habits and enjoy the sober purity of the beautiful world around us. So much good information on youtube to help you lead a healthier and happier life. Rock on!

@@ThisIsOurRetirement If I can make a suggestion for a video? I live in a 55+ community and have noticed that here and in general as people age they become more and more cloistered into their own world. You can walk 2 ft away from someone and they won't even acknowledge your existence, just look down and scoot away. Maybe a video to help people be aware and understand that with aging there is often a withdrawal from others around them and social settings, that they do still have a place in the world, are important and a right to be there. Helping them understand the importance of internal personal connections, regardless how minor makes a huge difference, thinking and speaking positive, being mindful of the moment - not trapped by past horrors that still haunt them, to be stoic and not let the feelings/words/angers/ideas of others suck them in and pollute their existence, and reassurance that they are not alone in their journey. The mind is a terribly fragile organ that needs continuous care. Cheers - Mike

Wow I believe I started listening to you guys near your first videos and watch you guys pretty much every week. You always find a new subject or twist to attract my attention. This morning you again surprised me with this sins video that I absolutely loved and believe is so important. My wife and I make it a daily habit to number one eat healthy, eating is the fuel for our boby so if we don’t fuel well we have more chances of having surprises we won’t like. Number two exercice every day, bike, run, walk, kayak, cross-contry skiing, swimming whatever we feel like but we move. Number three keep our minds going by volunteering in causes we are close to this also keeps us socially involved. Number four is also keep our finances in order and you guys share very well those subjects. We are also Canadians living in Qc there’s not a lot of good Canadian creators for this subject that I found but you guys rock. Keep up the good work and more important keep having fun doing it :-)

We noticed our consumption went up in retirement, so we bought a small wine carafe to use with our dinner to prevent "oh, why not another" syndrome. When it's gone, no refills, and consumed only with dinner. Prevents drinking the whole bottle in one go. We also use "no refills" on dinner plates, too!! Sparkling water seems to stay fizzy longer in a champagne flute and feels elegant

Once again, you have absolutely nailed it with regard to retirement living. It is so important to keep moving and to be proactive with your health. Another issue - you touched on it in another post - is loneliness which some older people experience in retirement, especially if they have lost a partner. This can be just as harmful to health, mental and physical, as overindulging in food and alcohol. Some physicians even believe it can be worse in terms of its effect on health so it’s also very important to seek company and to meet people regularly. Thank you once again for your warm and wise words. PS love a sausage roll too, Tina 😋

Hello from New Zealand. A 2nd point about losing weight Norm is that if you sit back in the afternoon with a beer or glass of wine, you feel very relaxed. This is because the alcohol slows down your metabolism. Exercise speeds up your metabolism and burns off extra calories, but a quiet drink not only adds extra calories to your diet, but it also slows down your metabolism so you're not burning them off. Loving your videos. I'm amazed at the parallels between your lives and ours (we are just a couple of years younger) and it's so nice that you have reinforced so many of the conclusions I've come to over the last few years in my retirement journey.

Not too long ago, the New York Times ran an article asking, “should alcohol come with a cancer warning”, I read the article with interest. The first comment to this piece was from an elder-care nurse and her response was, (as a long-term care professional) she found longevity to be “highly over rated” and to drink your wine! My philosophy is this, we enjoy exactly two 5 ounce glasses of wine a day, one before dinner and one with dinner, and then the bar is closed. Should we cut back, probably yes, but COVID did bring about this habit, and habit is exactly what it is. What we do know is that we have set our limit, and that is never compromised. Good for you two for addressing this issue as we too have thought about cutting back for our overall health and calories, so thanks for the inspiration!

Been retired 2 years but still working part time. Get up at 6am, have a good breakfast and coffee then jump on the bike at 7am before it gets too hot then ride for an hour an a half. I'll start pushing that back a bit as the sun is coming up later each day. If I'm not working at my part time job that day, I always have a project to work on that'll keep me busy all day. By dinner time, I start winding down and might have a beer or glass of wine but if I don't it's no big deal. I sometimes find myself more exhausted being retired as I tend to do too much, think I need to go back to my previous full time job to get some rest. Good luck

One thing I've found in retirement planning, is that a lot of the advice really pertains to any phase of life. Thank you for sharing these topics. Especially important for retirees, though even those leading up to retirement will benefit from these life lessons. It is important to keep yourself in check on all these points. Some people luck out, despite abusing their bodies - but that can't be expected. Like finances - if you invest in your health early and continually (or don't), those returns can start to compound over time. So the question is... what exactly are you compounding? (Good things, or bad?). While finances are at the forefront of the retirement planning world, health ought to be right up there as well. Keep the conversation going on this topic! I like the saying that you shared Tina. I will add another one to the mix that I've heard which speaks to keeping active .... "A body in motion, tends to stay in motion". While we think of Isaac Newton regarding this quote - it translates well to retirement. There is something to be said about avoiding a sedentary existence in life and retirement. If you want to keep your mobility and flexibility, keep moving and stretch out those muscles. Movement is life. Once you lose your mobility, you become a bystander to many things in life as opposed to an active participant.

Great talk Tina and Norm. Years ago we came upon the health message and quit drinking in 1995. Diet changes are much harder. I recently cut out all processed carbs. I don’t purchase snack food. I occasionally have a treat at a restaurant so I don’t feel deprived. It helps me stay in control and doesn’t expose myself to ongoing temptation. I also do intermittent fasting. Exercise and reducing or eliminating stress are important as well. I have had a cancer diagnosis twice, 2011 and 2014. I have come across information outside conventional wisdom for cancer so I have refused treatment. Instead I chose to have lumps removed and changed my lifestyle. My oncologist told me I was guaranteed late stage cancer. That was eight years ago. I have watched so many relatives choose conventional treatment, chemo therapy and radiation and watched them suffer and ultimately die a painful death. That’s not for me. The medical community has its limitations. Your wise to review your lifestyle and make changes where necessary. Thanks for keeping us all thinking and staying healthy. On another note, the world has lost a great historic figure, Queen Elizabeth II. What a classy lady and a wise woman.

Animal products can contribute to cancer cell development and growth, if you can switch to low fat, whole-food plant based diet, your condition could greatly improve. Please read more about it or watch some of the KZfaq videos from Physicians Committee to find out more about this type of diet. Wish you all the best. Take care.

@@tyng-shyanhuang9460 I am doing well. No evidence of cancer from my MRI that I had done through a private clinic in Vancouver. Thank you for your suggestion. I have had so many relatives that have passed away from Cancer that I have had the opportunity to be exposed to so many good theories on curing cancer naturally. I do agree with your information on diet. A high carb processed diet should be avoided. Eat only foods as grown 90% and 10% organic animal based.

@@debiwillis9045 I had two lumps surgically removed. One on my head and one behind my ear in the lymph system. That’s all I was prepared to do. I subscribe to a cancer sight to stay informed. I don’t live in fear. I liked Olivia Newton-John’s attitude. She was living with her illness instead of battling it. She did mindful meditation. She used conventional and natural. She was seeking a cure for cancer and hoped to do it naturally. Everyone’s situation is so different. Preventative is the best perpetration.

Another great video topic. This is something I noticed too since retiring 5 months ago. It's easy just to 'have another ' prior to supper. Will need to skip ever other day now to avoid overindulgence. One exercise you should mention is Pickleball. What an exciting social and exercise experience, amazing. You should try it. On another sad note, I'm surprised you didn't mention the passing of our beloved queen and your thoughts. Long live the king.

Excellent topic. My husband and I decided to stop alcohol 5 years ago in our earlyish 50's. Poor sleep, morning headaches, belly fat and expense not to mention our desire to maintain good health caused us to stop. Also, having watched so many of my mom's elderly friends (cocktail generation) pass from breast cancer was very sobering for me personally. When I started HRT for menopause that was the end of spirits for me. I found making homemade kombucha (with its trace amount of alcohol) helped us transition off our fave drinks. It took a while to lose the craving, but it's completely gone now, so for those trying to quit, know the desire will eventually pass. Thank you also for mentioning skin checks. Here in Canada's sunniest city the rate of skin cancer is very high. Lots of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma among my family and friends, so sunscreen and a hat (because even thick hair isn't a sunscreen) is such a good idea.

All good advice at any stage of life especially for retirees. On the water front, I drink between 2-3 litres/day but I always put lime or lemon in it. It's tasty especially when cool after I take it out of the fridge. Good taste with all the upsides of water and none of the downsides of alcohol, when consumed in overly generous quantities. 😊

My husband and I have almost completely stopped alcohol in retirement. We don't need the added expense and to be honest it doesn't do anything for us anymore. The occasional beer on a hot day but that's one beer. We also drink soda with lime or we make our own "sun ice tea" on our balcony and add a lemon sweetner to it and its delicious. When we are with friends or family who drink we just have water or tea. We don't miss it a bit. The colon tests are very important, our doctor gives them to us every year as part of our physical in Ontario. I did not know about free eye exams though. Will definately look into that. Thanks for all your great info.

I worked for the last 15 years with older folks in a rehabilitation facility and I learned that it is really important to start early taking care of your teeth and your hearing (wear hearing protection with loud tools, firearms, workplaces, etc.). In the USA hearing aids, glasses, & dentures are expensive and not always covered by insurance. Also people are loosing their hearing younger than they used to because of using earbuds and a world that is much louder than previous generations experienced.
