It's recommended to save at least 20% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of investing in the stock market and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

My BP went way down after I retired. Stress level is like 0-1 now. When you're in the grind day after day, year after year, you don't realize the stress you're under, until you're not. Most people are under so much stress and fear, they have no idea. Great video topic, btw.

One day in February 2011, I work up and made the decision that I had enough of the work environment. I loved my job but the work place was killing me slowly. As a single parent I have been responsible for my self since I was 18 years old. So my impulsive decision to retire at the age 59 was mine alone. Retiring was the best decision I have ever made. The last email message I sent to my colleagues reads ‘Esther has left the building’🤣🤣. “Free at last, free at last” Thanks for all your interesting topics around retirement. I can relate 💯

This is funny message to your colleagues! I cannot wait, I am 51 and my oldest kid is 18 and youngest is 13 so I unfortunately need to work a bit longer, primarily due to insurance and medical coverage for the family. But in 8 years I may be able to. I am in USA. The worst thing maybe by age of 62 for sure : )

I’m retiring in 10 days, at 58 . Yay. So excited to be free of the responsibilities of a management role, dealing with HR issues, getting ready for work every day and everything else that comes with it. I have been working pretty much non stop in my career for 37 years and now it’s time for me and to go on adventures with hubby. Thanks for all of the useful advice.

Great points, as usual. My wife and I look forward to your videos every Saturday morning. Also, having a financial planner/advisor you trust can give you a lot of confidence in making these big decisions. See you again next Saturday.

Great video. I’m ready to make a change at the age of 63 from a stress filled sales environment to retirement, I really don’t like the word retirement because I want to change my contribution to something that will be far more less demanding and beneficial for my age mentally and even physically. What a great video. I took early retirement from the NHS June 2019 and I agree with all you both said in the early part of the video. I'm a mental health nurse and it's true, I didn't notice the stress I was under until the I left and knew I wasn't going back. I now work for an agency in a different area of nursing and although I work sometimes more than full time hours it's less mental draining as I know I can make the decision not to go to work if I don't feel like it. I also travel 3 times a year to Madeira spending 4 weeks at a time. I got no one telling me I have to work at Christmas or dictating when I can have leave, it's like working for myself. I could go on forever but this comment is long enough. This is the first video of yours that I've seen I'll be bingeing the rest. Continue to enjoy your retirement. 😎👍🏾

I’m about to retire after 42 years in mental health nursing. It was Covid and more pressure from management that eventually made my decision for me. I used to love my job but sadly I don’t anymore which is such a shame as I feel I have so much left to give. But I realise my stress levels are far worse and like you said I’m fed up of being told I have to work Xmas and I can’t have certain weeks off for annual leave as those with children have priority 🙄 no disrespect but just because I don’t have children I feel I get penalised. Well enough!!! I have 4 weeks to go and although scary I know it’s the right decision

Another good video. I especially like your advice on building friendships. I find that in retirement it can be easier to make friends because people have more free time. When people are working and raising a family, they are often too busy to want to start any new friendships. I agree that going into a new social situation is a good adventure. Be friendly and there will always be people who are happy to spend time with you.

I just so enjoy my Sunday morning cup of tea with you two. Such an amiable chat with valuable information. I have to agree with Dara ( Magenta Otter Travels) too and her two points. Not having someone look over your shoulder every day. Not to be at someone's beck and call and being answerable to someone for your time and input, oh the BLISS of it all. One generally doesn't experience the feeling I'm sure, unless the job isn't suited to you, until the freedom of retirement knocks on your door. It still surprises me the number of people who fear retirement. Embrace it. You are your own employer to plan and execute the daily routine and content. You tell the story so well. Yes, we moved to our apartment before retirement, yes we do now travel ( working around Covid) and we can set our own pace in our morning routine. Like I said, BLISS is GOOD! 💖 🙏 🚢🛬✈️🏕🆓🗒🛀🪙🍷

So agree about traveling! Even though travel is exciting and interesting, it does require energy. We started traveling 18 years before we retired; when our kids were out of college. We were easily staying only 2 days in each town or city. As time went on, we found we needed at least 3-4 days in each place, just to conserve our energy more. Still love to travel, and especially like to spend a couple of weeks in a place just to get that feeling of being part of the neighborhood.

We agree in fact we are finding that when we stay a month or so it’s great as you live more like a local than being on vacation for a week .That's the problem with cruises 🚢 it’s lovely seeing lots of new places but it’s only for a day or even a few hours. Hope you are having a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

Spot on. My goal was to “remove myself from the rat race” (I don’t like the word retire, I prefer refocus) before age 60 and refocused at age 59. Part of refocusing was to downsize in all areas. Renting an apartment in an area where many things, i.e., eye doctor, is within walking distance and being on the main bus routes and being close to walking and bicycling trails took quite a bit of research and some good fortune. There are planned communities that are designed that way, but fortunately I found a place on my own. The opportunities are infinite, you just have to do research and settle on a plan.

Sounds great like you we wanted to be walking distance from a grocery store , we are on a bus 🚌 route and we have walking trails around a lovely lake 2 mins from our apartment ( complete with gym and swimming 🏊‍♀️ pool ) we found our place through our own research and so glad we did . You are blessed to still have each when you retired. I'll be 68 this October & plan on retiring the end of 2022. My husband of 34 years decided he wanted a divorce just over 5 years ago. He'd met up with his high school girlfriend & went to her, taking 40% of my 401(k) with him. Our house was sold divided between us & I bought a condo & have since paid it off. All of that + age has taken a toll on me & I can't deal with the pressure of my job any longer. While I no longer have the person I thought I'd be with in retirement I do have my children (from 1st marriage) & my grandchildren as well as some lady friends that I hope to be able to do things with. I'm so nervous that I don't have enough saved but it's time for me to take this next step. You're videos have helped with this decision. Enjoy your time together! PS - My dad was in the US Air Force so was born in Emgland then he did a 2nd tour & I went to 4 years of school at High Wycomb Air Force Base. I love listening to you talk! 😉 🤗

Nice to hear what you are and have experienced. We are planning now and we are in our early 40’s. The only negative with renting will be the possibility of the landlord/owner selling the property and getting asked to leave. Downsizing would be a safer option for security.

Excellent topic! Especially how your social network changes after retirement...so true. You essentially have to reboot your social life and start connecting with new people outside of work . I've got a lot of work to do in this area unfortunately...and covid doesn't help!!! Stress is another major factor which slowly undermines your health and well being over time. Congrats on making the jump early to enjoy a happy retirement....looks like you two make a great team and have things well figured out. Tuned in for next weeks episode :) Take care 🍻

Once again this week, more good retirement stuff to consider ! For me, though, retirement was not exactly a "lay my burden down" moment. I tended to look for new things to be stressed about - like health and longevity. I'm trying (with some success) to adopt the "Que Sera; Sera" attitude.

Two things I agree with MOST STRONGLY: 1 - Eliminating stress by retiring or switching to an alternate career in the second half of life is SUCH a blessing! it helps improve your life, your relationships, and your health. 2 - Definitely travel as soon as your work schedule and finances allow! Do NOT put it off forever, because you are so right that health issues can spring up without warning and curtail your travel abilities. Thanks for sharing your journey in retirement life, always a pleasure to hear your experiences! Cheers XX Dara

I really enjoy your videos Tina and Norm. I am 49 (will turn 50 in 2 weeks) and I put in my retirement notice last Friday to my job of 25 years. I have sold my acreage and downsized to a small lot in a recreational park in Alberta where I will build a small cabin. I agree with what you said about friendships, I have met many of my new neighbors and everyone is so friendly. It's going to be the perfect little community for me. I am so looking forward to no more shift work, and no more work stress, of which I have waaaay too much of. It will be like heaven to be retired, just me and my pets. Thanks for all the great tips! I agree. We retired young at 55 and always found something to do. You're right about stress free living. I volunteered a day a week in my community and that was a good transition. Also good to travel when you're younger with changing health yes. I'm so thankful for five years cruising. The housing is a great tip. We're in a patio home on one level which can do us as we age but I know some people start renting for ease of settling the estate later. Lots of things to consider. Good one about Looking for friendships.

Hi Rhoda volunteering sounds like a great idea , we are also so glad we travelled crazy in our first 5 years of retirement we did many cruises 🚢 to Alaska, Panama 🇵🇦 Canal , Australia 🇦🇺 New Zealand 🇳🇿, Spain 🇪🇸, and many others , places that now with all the Covid travel restrictions we wouldn’t be able to see . Interesting point about renting to ease settling of estate , our main focus was to sell and invest the money 💰 to enjoy our retirement. Have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thank you for your words of encouragement and believe me I take them straight to heart! Your statement about not being able to buy back health or time is hitting home like never before. As of last week, a new development in the equation. My brother (who retired just last October) suffered a fall and was taken to the hospital. Long story short he was diagnosed with bilateral lung cancer with extensive metastasis and was discharged home into Hospice care. Since last week our family has been trying to provide his care at home for whatever time he has left. It is adding even more stress to an already stressful life as a correctional nurse. Again thanks for your words of wisdom. Take Care

Great video. Husband and I are considering this too. He's already retired (6 years) and I will likely do so in 2 years. We have no family connections or obligations so can stay or move anywhere we want! It's hard to decide if we want to sell the house and get a smaller place (rent or buy). I'd like to spend a year staying in different places for 2 months at a time so we can get a feel of each area before moving. It's easy to stay in short-term housing, or Airbnb type places and either rent out house or sell it and store our stuff (after a massive purge). I've worked in tech for 30+ years and am so ready to get out and done with the stress and drama. I've lived to work and barely know what to do with myself after retire.

Another wonderful conversation - I find myself looking forward to these each Saturday. Isn't it intersting the way happenstance, or coincidence can alter your lives. That fellow comes to your home, and from him, you learn about an entirely different path your lives can take. I find that fascinating. Great video and look forward to your video on how/why you became expats. I know a few people are asking about where to find cheaper rents and with us coming from UK in 2020, I had been researching for a good year before and with my Cdn/UK status and having lived in Cda for a number of years, I researched prices in all the areas that gave me the landscape I was looking for. Climate was important so anything north of the 401 was iffy. It does take time to do the research and a few visits and to visit with the idea of living there and not as a visitor ❤ what you both said about chatting with the Home inspector and picking up ideas from a stranger brought up another subject of 'having an open mind' that was a tough one for me but proved to be invaluable as well. Enjoy your week and stay safe❤

AMEN to that, I totally agree with you about the lack of restrictions, and restrictions that you are placed under at work. One of my former bosses, actually asked me to come back. I told him that it took me 34 years to get out of here, I'm not going back. I find that the people who complain about their spouse getting under their feet, are most likely those people whose spouse was either not ready for retirement and/or was forced into retirement because of work related cut backs and also does not have any outside interests. Thank you Tina and Norm This is soooo important conversation with your partner. We had a conversation similar to this and I will share it with you because your channel has helped us. We chose a retirement date and wrote down a plan Pre retirement 1-2 vacations 4-5 times a year once every 6-8 weeks in the winter Stage 1 discover the world travel many places less than 3 months in one place, keep our house keep our cars Stage 2 --3-6 months returning to Canadian in the summers … sell the house and buy a home in a small town or have a year lease on a apartment have only 1 car Stage 3. Full time somewhere warm sell house stay with our kids when we visit Canada give one of our cars to the kids and we can use when we visit. So when conversations come up we say oh watch stage are you talking about.

Communication with your partner I think is essential, some people i'd suggest would struggle with all the time spent together during retirement, you guys seem to be in unison with each other and have obviously discussed these issues before-hand, always weighing up pros and cons and being considerate of each others views(very refreshing to see an equal thought process coming across in your video discussions)..........As always helpful concise advice from you both............ATB........Stu....👍😊
