Bad solder joint on the forearm lug sucked me in, failing stock bedding sucked us down the rabbit hole. What we show is what you need to learn, not a tutorial. If you do not posses the skills to perform at this level, do NOT attempt. Support us: / anvil

This reminds me of a thing my Great-Grandfather mentioned, which was don't mind the wood on guns because you are supposed to replace that every now and then. Of course, his hobby was wood-working, every man in his community worked with wood regularly as part of their farming lives, and fine walnut trees were plentiful. I reckon he was not the only man of the 1870s who figured that good wood and wood-workers would always be plentiful.
@ScottKenny1978

Yeah, we failed to account for the slow rate of growth of good walnut...
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScottKenny1978 Ironically, the majority of walnut in my Great-Grandfathers area did in fact end up in guns as the US Government took all they could find in 1918. Sadly, few people had the patience to replace those trees, so the region is rather light on them to this day.

@@genericpersonx333 yeah, I can imagine. As the old joke goes, "the best time to plant an Oak tree is 30 years ago, the second best time is now." I need to make friends with the cherry orchards west of here, see when the next time they're replanting is.

The checkering reminds me of my toughest job ever. An owner had decided he was capable of chasing the checkering on his grandfather's English made tube gun. He did so much damage that I was forced to basically mortice away all of the checkering, and inlay a piece of laminate (actually 3 layers) to bring the surface back to flush. That was just to get a surface back that could be checkered without the lines being 1/4 inch deep. I knew I would never match the wood, so I decided to use a teak inlay which added a really nice subtle contrast to the 100 year old maple furniture. The toughest part was actually not the inlay. The toughest part was pulling off the inlay without refinishing the rest of the furniture. And then trying to make new inlay look like it's been there over 100 years. It all worked out in the end, but that experience involved 3000 pucker moments.

Reminds me so much of the old days building new and reviving old civil war guns for competition shooting with my dad back when we were in the NSSA. Swear to God that man could take a Smith carbine or Springfield rifle that had sat in the bottom of a swamp since the war and not only bring it back to life, but do it in a way that it looked like a clean original that never had been restored. Plus, it would punch the guts out of a golf ball at 50 yards all day long. I miss doing all that. Though I sure don't miss hammering out and polishing hundreds of barrel bands for days on end, lol.

We used to use that vice Felt on the 12g fibre wad cutting machines, it would soak up hot lubricant and the wads could be rolled over it. When it was time to replace them they could be cut into strips and used for fire lighters. It was also used on the cartridge loading machines as lube wheels to lube the tops for the rollover crimp. Loving your informative videos.
