Wow, Mark will use every possible opportunity to pull out his Johnson and play with it on video. 😸😸😸 On a serious note, I've just learned that the AR-10 and AR-15 borrowed the lockup system from the Johnson. I didn't even know that Johnson worked with Stoner. That's really cool. I'm really happy you 2 made this video; tons of valuable info taught throughout!

The Johnson wasn't a backup plan, it was the main idea. Garand's M1 that we know today was the dark horse that was so great it won. Melvin wasn't even in the US when this happened, he was in Britain because he thought the US adoption was guaranteed.

The "papier mache" comment was an apt description of the Johnson / Stoner (and MG34, MG42, etc.) innovation of localizing load-bearing receiver functions to an inch or two of barrel extension. It doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves; IMNSHO it's a "check valve" in the history of technology, an inflection point beyond which it's objectively stupid and wrong to ever do it the old way again (at least since patent(s) expired). It finally, belatedly brought headspace up to the 1840s standard of parts interchangeability (which ironically originated in firearms manufacture), making barrel exchanges intuitive for laymen - even more so in firearms with no gas tube to work around. It also makes the rest of the "receiver" a mere alignment jig for barrel, BCG, FCG, and optics, allowing lighter / cheaper / easier to machine materials with zero loss of function. Why haven't more manufacturers grasped the obvious?
@chipsterb4946
@chipsterb4946 Жыл бұрын
I agree. My Browning BLR takedown lever action rifle uses the same bolt locking into barrel extension approach. Ignorant question: are there bolt action rifles that also have a bolt head locking up into a barrel extension instead of the receiver?
@Justice-ian
@Justice-ian Жыл бұрын
@@chipsterb4946 I've seen a few, but only in high-end / custom rifles - which is ridiculous, since the extension method would actually be _cheaper_ to produce as I noted previously. Some might argue - just as with P320s vs. P365s - that a manufacturer offering easy-swap barrels would be cannibalizing his own market share, i.e. denying himself the opportunity to sell you two or three rifles. That mindset ignores the fact that the first decent manufacturer to offer that capability would take everyone else's market share.
@chipsterb4946
@chipsterb4946 Жыл бұрын
@@Justice-ian I honestly don’t understand. The BLR mechanism would be *much simpler* with a bolt action than the rack & pinion lever action. The only function of the receiver would be to keep the bolt running fore and aft, plus hold the trigger in place, House the safety and bolt release, and accept the magazine. I believe that The Fix rifle by Q has a barrel extension. Basically it’s a bolt actuated AR from the looks of it. But the darned thing is over $3,000 and that’s with a Faxon barrel if I’m not mistaken 🤨
@Justice-ian
@Justice-ian Жыл бұрын
@@chipsterb4946 Right, "The Fix" is a perfect example of the craziness. Since an AR or BLR _is_ a bolt action with added functionality, a bolt rifle is (mechanically, even if not chronologically) an AR minus the parts added to perform those functions, and therefore inherently simpler and cheaper as you said. Even if a company didn't market interchangeable barrels (at least at first), they could make a fortune through manufacturing simplicity alone. Ruger (a pioneer in investment castings) is well-placed to take advantage of the opportunity. Now that I think about it, with the right extension setup, it would be pretty easy to do just about everything else in polymer. Imagine a 4lb, $300 bolt (or pump) SU-16.
