For a Sunday ride I decided to try and outrun the coastal rain, and head inland. Linking up the cycle paths, the gravel heritage trail, some highway riding, finishing off with some country back roads.
Bike: Trek Checkpoint Gravel Bike. 40mm Pirelli Gravel M tyres, Shimano SPD pedals

You do amazing rides each week. Never heard bell being used passing walkers or other cyclists

I don’t pass many other cyclists. :). But it’s used plenty when required. Most people hear the free wheel and move across. I have never had any issues or had any one comment on the paths. But thanks for the reminder.

Im new to cycling, (a MAMIL) but its similar to the remote adventure biking and 4x4ing I also do.. 1. Prepare. There are many tools to prepare. I use google earth and street view to look at the roads, see how big the shoulder is etc. There are a lot of tools out there. If possible have a back up, ie have someone available to come and get you. This takes the stress out of it when you are starting out 2. Prepare the bike. make sure everything is maintained and if required replaced. 3. Nutrition. You are the engine, keep it fueled. Make sure you have enough energy to ride out of a situation. Make sure you are not exhausted, and you start making bad decisions. Dont forget water. carry enough, or know where you can refill 4. When riding on the road, you are allowed to be there. Command your position and don't be intimidated but others, yelling and some of the other strange things that happen.. Command your position and be seen.. But obvious,y, you aren't going to win up against a vehicle, so there always a time when you have to decide to vacate the situation and head into the bush, or a footpath or whatever. But dont ride like a dick like you own the place.. Commanding your position and thinking you own the road are different. 5. Correct tyre pressures for the off road. I always use to run to high. I got punctures, and it was rough.. lower them, you wont get punctures, its nice and smooth, and rolling resistance is the same or better. Take tyre repair tools. 6. Sunscreen.. 1 hours in the sun will roast you.. take sunscreen, arm protectors etc 7. Here is Australia its big, open and often no Cell coverage.. I take a Sat Phone when riding in these areas, or an Inreach.. 8 Post it on Starva.. If its not on Strava it basically didnt happen :)
