They are such an adorable couple. And despite the public perception that celebrities don't have happy marriages...there are quite a few like Marlo and Phil who have happy, long last relationships. Glad to see they are finally get recognized.

I watched that Donahue show in 1977 and could see Phil and Marlo falling in love right in front of our eyes. I remember saying out loud, "Oh my God, they're falling in love!" What a great couple. Love both. Thank both for so much fine entertainment. Especially thank Phil because he was the first show, that I as a young mom of 4 children (then along came #5) could watch and feel that women were being acknowledged as having intelligence and worth as well as being a nurturing mom. God bless you both.

💥I'll take Phil Donahue over Dr.Oz, Dr Phil, Steve Harvey, Geraldo Rivera,Wendy Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Judge Judy, Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, all judge shows, and Oprah Winfrey especially. He has a natural style and approach that's professional yet VERY informative and Actually Entertaining ❗❗❗As a kid in the 80s I learned soooooo much from his morning show. I'd watch him in between Seseme Street and the best 80s Soap Opera's. Every topic didn't fly over my head as a kid because of how Phil would breakdown each subject. I'll always remember his guests, his interviews and no matter the drama, his dignity ❗❗❗👍👍👍👍👍👍💥

Best role Marlo ever did was in "Nobody's Child" - the true story of Marie Balter - a woman who spent 20 years in a mental institution, who with the help of a doctor who saw more in her than the traditional psychotic psychiatrist, managed to learn to type, get a job, live in the community, go to college, get married and live a normal life - an advocate for those with emotional problems (I don't call it mental illness). She was terrific in that role. What a terrific person in real life as well.

@@dennismorris7573--You missed the point. You don't give marital advice about how to make a marriage work when you've walked out on your first wife with five small children so you can have your mid-life crisis and trawl for a "celebrity" wife who brings money and no children to the mix then or ever. Marlo Thomas is a piece of work...she just about broke her father's heart. Now she's managing the St. Jude charity and I will not longer donate to it while she's heading it or part of it.

Take some time to get to know someone before you marry them. Those things about them that bug you from the start are going to drive you crazy a few years from now. Pay attention to how that person talks about and treats their parents, strangers, children, and animals. That's going to give you tremendous insight into how they are going to treat you later on.

It's also very odd the book doesn't profile the marriage of Jane Pauley and Garry Trudeau, both of them still on their first marriage and still together after 40 years. I don't think it is hard to figure out why it has lasted. They didn't do the early marriage nonsense with Pauley around 30 and Trudeau around 32 when they married in 1980. They also have separate interests and unrelated careers so they bring in a lot more to the marriage than people without. It doesn't hurt they were each rich when they married, so they didn't need the financial "security."

Why does it have to be a character flaw? I have a vet strong solitary bone and most certainly don’t consider it a flaw. I’m just sorry it appears you do.

@@glendagarcia6194 I was saying that there are people with character flaws that make it unadvisable for them to get married. I did not mention your name in that thought and I'm sorry you took it personally. I know a person who takes things personally when he clearly should not. He too lives a solitary lifestyle. I'm not sure it is entirely his choice.

Heather, my objection was not personal. It was in your use of the word flaw as opposed to a characteristic of that personality. Flaw means there’s something wrong in substance. There’s nothing flawed or wrong in being an introvert or liking alone time, but anger issues can, not always but can lead to violence. Two very different things. But I do agree wholeheartedly agree that there are people who should not marry, or at the least partner more carefully.

I love seeing that 40 year old clip - still fresh, giving such HOPE! Mrs. Thomas- Donahue, your view of marriage, (w/ all of it's bumps), being " a cushion of life", is itruly inspired. What you do for families with sick children at St. Jude's, well there are no words. I only have enough $ to support 3 charities at the beginning of each year and your's, " ST." is one of them,. (the other two, deserve a nod: The Humane Society & The ON-J Cancer & Wellness Hospital in Australia, (also a unique, totally free, different focus on ages,), that, like your's ,I wish woild also catch on. Good things only, good health to you both and to your family always.

Its funny how everyone always wants to know what to do to make a relationship work. George Burns was asked the same thing. They asked “what did u do to make it work” he said “we did nothing. Today’s couples always think too much bout how to make it work. Just be. Just live and that’s it” i agree. If you’re friends first and respect and like each other and communicate it’ll work. Period. It’s not the wedding, the ring, the ceremony, reception. None of those things matter. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are still 2gether. They outlasted a lot of couples that walked down the isle. Love, respect, friendship, communication. If u don’t have that u have zip!
