Nice desk! Here is an idea for a future project. When you cut the pieces to final arrangement use a flush trim for half of the depth and route the edges by certain amount. That will create a fixed border for each pieces yet meeting at bottom. Now fill that with a resin with some shimmering metallic stuff followed by clear. That should look really awesome I think.

I have to pick on the ONLY thing possible for my aesthetics, maybe a little more metal?. This is so sick. I initially thought it was silver or white in the epoxy. I can’t even imagine how you thought this up, but do it again and again. I always like the look of wood, but I’m getting turned into liking the way you did the metal more. It’s hard to stop lauding this.

We have black locust here in Texas. I've probably have cut about 50 cords of it for firewood. It's a pretty wood and makes great firewood. If the black locust trees are close to you, might want to look into getting a honeybee hive. My grandpa has told me that it makes damn good honey. Another tree here is called Osage orange, bodark is another name. It's a pretty wood as well. Downside is, it's heavy.
@marmotaworks
@marmotaworks 6 ай бұрын
The black locust is one of my favorite woods. Very hard, durable, and also beautiful. If it's not used more, it's because the trees don't grow very large, and wide boards can't be obtained from them.
@simpleman806
@simpleman806 6 ай бұрын
@@marmotaworks That is true. The size is one reason why I liked it for firewood. But it does grow fast. I caution people that want to plant it. It spreads fast. You can plant a tree and it'll grow from the roots from the original tree

I have been wanting to do a project like this for a while so it was cool to see your process. The steel is a neat idea but, for myself, doesn't seem like it's worth the work. Still, knowing that the polyethylene will not stick to epoxy is a useful tidbit to know. Thanks for the video.

As always I love the precision of the puzzle and the playfulness of your video editing :) In this particular piece I like the light band at the outside of the logs, it gives the edges a nice touch. Also a fan of the addition of the metal. If you could somehow integrate fire (maybe char some of the wood?), air and water you could create a five elements piece!

Very nice, beautiful project. Love "Oyster" veneering jobs, and hope to try some eventually; epoxy certainly seems a good method. I didn't understand why you didn't just leave the UHMW plastic in; it seemed to look good itself. Did you consider using chunks of WOOD in those gaps before filling with epoxy?

Looks very nice, but how did you end up getting the various pieces of steel to be perfectly flush with the table top? I'd guess as you sanded, the steel pieces were at slightly different levels resulting in you having to pour resin/sand in such a way that the table top is not perfectly flush.

I wonder if it does not cause any trouble to cut it with a chainsaw as the oil from the chain can get on the wood and the epoxide might not adhere properly 🤔. Btw nice job

Well, it's something I hadn't considered. I suppose the oil released by the chainsaw isn't enough to cause issues. I've made many tables like that, and I've never had adhesion problems.
